Eva's Roost is a rustic zen-style cottage on the property of Center For Lost Arts in Cobden. Nestled in the hillside the roost gives a sense of oneness with nature. No curtains allow a complete experience of nature: forest, pond, stars, moonrise, sunrise, birds & animals. Paul is the architect of everything you see. Bonnie offers Mindful Living sessions & facilitates individual/group retreats at the main house. Together they offer Eva's Roost for you to enjoy - a cozy cabin all your own.

The space
Enjoy your own place while having access to gardens, trails, & pond. We offer a discount for stays over three nights so guests can completely unwind, unplug and reconnect with themselves, their companion or with nature. Whatever's needed! The peaceful, natural setting is perfect for writers, artists, musicians and anyone needing some time out from their regular routine. The cottage is simple with a woodstove, bathroom with shower, sitting area and double bed. A small kitchen(toaster oven, induction plate, kettle, coffeemaker, dishes & basic cooking supplies) doubles as a storm shelter if ever needed. Electric heat is available for winter and air conditioner for summer. The pond room fan is set to push warm air down in winter and draw cool air up in summer. You'll find it's remote on the wall. During the coldest part of winter (December-February) the heaters alone are usually not enough to keep the cabin toasty so the woodstove is a must. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen at the main house if they are wanting to use a large oven or gas stove. If you need assistance in learning to start and maintain a fire, Paul or Bonnie can show you how. Eventually their will be a screened in porch to sit out in the evenings by the pond. Currently, there is an outdoor fire pit with adirondack chairs facing the pond. Those interested in architecture, creative spaces & naturally wild settings will especially love Center For Lost Arts and Eva's Roost or Tiny House of Paul(our other retreat space). We have a young farmer/producer growing food in two large gardens on our property. He is also propagating trees and other ventures. His name is Stuart and he arrived just before the pandemic. You are welcome to ask him questions about his natural farming practices or buy seasonal produce directly from him. Normally guests are welcome to help in the gardens or participate in yoga, meditation, retreats or other seasonal activities such as tapping maple trees, drying herbs, infusing oils, laying stone and more. During the pandemic, we are more limited on these offerings, but we trust you will enjoy what is here.

Guest access
All guests have access to the kitchen and laundry in the main house(except during Covid-19). Enjoy the walking trails, gardens and check out our greenhouse. Internet in the cabin works most of the time. During Covid-19 we have reduced rates and are asking people to bring their own bedding, towels and dishtowels as well as packing out their own garbage and recycling. If this is not possible, let us know and we'll make accommodations.

Other things to note
Covid-19 Update: We have reopened bookings the first weekend of June, 2020. We are asking guests to bring their own bedding, towels & dishtowels. We prefer that guests take away their own garbage and recycling. If neither of these precautions are easy for you, let us know and we'll make accommodations.
Note: The driveway entrance has no sign(other than a Hate Has No Home Here sign) as we'd rather that people passing by don't drop in unexpectedly. We prefer giving directions to guests, clients & yoga/retreat participants for now. Most people find it easily, but call if you're having difficulty. The driveway is gravel. It is straight, steep & fine to drive up under normal conditions. We have options when there are extreme weather conditions. There are two mailboxes for our property. One black and one brown.

Cobden, Illinois, United States

Southernmost Illinois is a unique part of the State. Rock formations abound, the Shawnee National forest surrounds us and the rolling hills, small farms, wineries, orchards and quirky & quaint towns add to the charm and interest of the area. We are a few minutes from Cobden, ten minutes from either Alto Pass(Bald Knob), Anna or the now infamous town of Makanda. Carbonale is twenty minutes and Murphysboro about 30 minutes. Giant City Park is fifteen minutes one way and Trail of Tears is about the same distance the other. Many overlooks, trails, rock climbing areas plus not far to go kayaking or canoeing. Art and music everywhere whether it be at the wineries, The Old Feed Store, local galleries and other venues. We own Packrats Paradise Antique Mall which also sells local and handcrafted items. Cobden has some very good restaurants we're happy to recommend. Others in nearby towns we can suggest as well. Let us know your interests and we can make suggestions or recommendations. There is a binder at the roost with lots of information.

I am a spiritual director, retreat facilitator and mindfulness & meditation teacher who loves to travel and also loves to come home. I like to stay in places that are simple and cozy. I am a social person, but also enjoy time alone reading, walking, meditating or being creative. I grow food organically with my partner and love to share our produce with guests at our retreat house. When I travel, I seek out restaurants that support local farmers and I share local places like this with guests at my retreat house. I am curious and love adventure, so appreciate tips on great places to visit, eat or explore. Having been hosted by many others in my life, I have loved offering the Homestead Retreat for others to enjoy. I wanted it to be a peaceful place to stay and that even if you just showed up with a toothbrush, you would have all that you need! In August of last year, my partner Paul and I added Eva's Roost Retreat to our Airbnb listings. This sweet zen-style cottage has large windows overlooking the pond and forest & is a quiet & private space to retreat for one or two people. We are well into our third year of being listed on Airbnb and loving every minute. We look forward to welcoming you.

During your stay
Paul and I are available as needed. Some guests have made us dinner while others have joined us for breakfast. Some like a tour of the main house or tiny home project while others are here for private time together. We have no agenda & are pretty easy going. Make this time your own.
