Stayed at the Meiners Oaks Retreat with a group of 9 people who were in town for a wedding. We thought staying at a house together would be more cost effective and allow us to spend more time together as a group instead of individual hotel rooms.. This place was great!!
This is a very hippy'ish home with lots of querks and cool things around the house to admire and look at..
There is a nice seating area in the front lawn with a fire place.. We sat around the fire one night having a good time.. There are 3 bedrooms inside the house, and a couple of log cabin rooms outside of the main house with heaters for cold weather (as it was for us being the middle of December).. Nick, the property manager was really easy to deal with, and was very welcoming when we arrived..
Pool table was a good addition to play in the afternoon, some nice books to read, and a chicken coop in the back which added to the overall charm of the house.. At first we were a little taken back by the character of the house, but this place really started to grow on us, and we wished we could have stayed an extra day....
Beds were comfortable, and there were plenty of towels provided for everyone to use.
Close proxemity to town (5 mins), and was easy to find for cabs, guest, etc..
Thank you Mark for allowing us to stay at your house!! If we are ever back in the area with a large group of friends, we'll be sure to have a 2nd go at staying at this charming residence..
This place was absolutely perfect for our group of 6 adults and 4 kids ages 3-8. We rented the whole place for a long Thanksgiving Day weekend. I knew from the pictures and reviews that it would be eclectic and quirky and I was not disappointed. Before nightfall the first night, I worried about getting to the outdoor bathroom in the dark; but as night fell, lights on timers began to come on. We ate Thanksgiving dinner outside under the lights of the chandelier. The hot tub and the outdoor bathtub both got some use. The pool table was a huge hit and was in play for hours on end. Chickens and cats were fed. My husband and I walked up the hill to Deer Lodge one night and the entire group walked the few blocks down to Meiner's Oaks to the pizzeria one night and the Farmer and the Cook another night. Activities enjoyed by various members of the group: hiking on the trails just to the west (Oso Trail, River Trail),
visit to Lake Casitas with bikes, biking on the Ventura River Trail, riding the trolley into town, hanging out at the playground and park in town. In short, we had a blast--hope to come back again.
Our host gave me good e-mail instructions but they were on the same day and I didn't see them until after we arrived as we had a long day of traveling. We were never greeted by by anyone and the caretaker on the property never introduced herself or asked if we needed anything
This is an amazing house! We stayed at it for a wedding and my more affluent cousins rented a place that was listed as a mansion. The joke was that our place was way cooler, their place was a 5br3bath and ours was a 5br/3.25 bath! The outdoor showers are refreshing and relaxing, the old school mint condition range and spacious kitchen allowed me to cook for 16, with ample seating out front. The chickens lay fresh eggs every day, and the cat is outdoors and super friendly. It is within a block of the Deer Lodge, and also nearby is the Farmer and the Cook. Sara, the caretaker, welcomed us and was able to direct us to a swimming hole 3.3mi up the 33 from the house (on the left in the oak stand behind the big oak tree, usually a couple of cars parked there, naked people, and of course a didgeridoo!). There is a piano and a guitar and a ukelele for the musically inclined, an outdoor smoking and fire pit, even the book Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die by Willie Nelson on the coffee table. While this isn't a new condo in Miami or a villa in Malibu, it is the perfect place to enjoy Ojai if you are attracted to the funky, DIY, spiritual, self sufficient, artsy, earthy rep that Ojai has grown in the past 60 years.
We had a wonderful stay at Meiners Oaks Retreat. So many whimsical, fun and interesting things to look at and discover. The kids had a blast exploring. Was great having a piano, guitar and ukelele to jam by the fire. There was plenty of room for our large group and loved having bikes to get into town with! It's literally right around the corner from the Deer Lodge which had great live music and good food. So happy we found this place. Would definitely stay again!
What a fantastic escape! We all really enjoyed our stay. The house was clean and directions for everything were clear and understandable. Sara gave the first to arrive a quick tour of the property which was so fun and inviting. We had a great time here and would recommend and come back again!
Sara did a great job communicating with us - This place is really cool and great for big groups - We had a lot of fun and it was perfect for what we required. We will rent this place again when The Paralyzers tour comes back to Santa Barbara. Thanks again!
