My girlfriend and I stayed at Le Fontane for a couple nights during our trip to Italy. Isa and Paolo were wonderful hosts and this is truly a unique spot to stay. If you are looking for a urban accommodation with plenty of amenities, then this is not the spot for you. If however, you want something that offers spectacular views from the mountains, and plenty of nature to explore, then you have found it here.
We like to go on walks and hikes wherever we go, and fortunately there is a challenging but manageable trail very close to Le Fontane that stretches for many miles.
If you're into cycling, SP69 provides a physical and technical challenge on a fairly consistently well maintained surface. Unfortunately I left my bike at home so I could only enjoy it on my own two feet. As a bonus there are a few agriturismo spots nearby as well as a few cantinas and wineries.
Assuming you're renting a car and driving to Le Fontane, there are a couple of things to note. 1) google maps is not particularly great in this area and will unfortunately route you suboptimally up a municipal road that is not very well maintained and quite narrow at certain points. Be prepared for a new experience if you've never driven on such roads before. 2) You are going to want to be driving a narrow car unless you have impeccable understanding of the dimensions of your vehicle. 3) Try to get something with more horsepower than a Fiat 500 (ours had 69hp). It can manage, but it leaves something to be desired going up the roads.
Overall this was an amazing experience and not something that we will soon forget. We will be back the next time we are in Italy, and will be sure to stay longer than only a couple of nights.
