Recording Studio, Horses, Vineyards

House - Private room · Pinecrest Dr, Redwood Valley, CA 95470, United States

Deeply quiet, converted recording studio in the country, surrounded by vineyards. Our location has a killer sound system, horses to ride, trails to walk, minutes from wineries and hot springs in one of the world's more beautiful counties, Mendocino.

The Space

Stay in a recording studio in the country where many great records were made. Some of the artists who recorded here are Paul Winter, Holly Near, Alex de Grassi, Paul McCandless, Barbara Higbie, Kostia, Todd Philips, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Michael Manring, Joe Craven and many others. Lee Mun Wah's award winning films on racism (The Color of Fear, Last Chance for Eden, If These Walls Could Talk) were all filmed here.

This is the quietest sleep anyone will ever have as all the walls are 2' thick. There also is a separate entrance from the main house for privacy. We are solar powered, on a well, situated on 5 serene acres and surrounded by vineyards.

Play the concert grand piano, guitars or percussion, take horseback riding lessons for a fee ($35 an hour-we have horses and a riding arena), swim in the pool (seasonal), hike in the woods to the creek next to us, tour Mendocino county wineries (90+), and much more.

There is a king bed in the Control Room, a queen bed in the 'Isolation Booth' and a queen in the building next to the studio. Price quoted is for the main Control Room and there is a $35 fee for each of the extra rooms.

There is a coffee pot, microwave, small fridge and a toaster oven available next to the Control Room. We are on artesian well water and it tastes great.

Wireless and cable hookup are throughout. Flat screen video and movies abound in surround sound in the Control Room. Listen to music on 1890's to 1930's gramophones and phonographs as well as spin some 33 vinyl records or CD's on a killer sound system. Read by Elvis 'Fat Boy' mic lights and wake up to complete silence.

We are 10 minutes north off Ukiah right off Hwy 101, one hour to the Pacific coast and 2.5 hours north of SF. Visit regional highlights like wine tasting and take a tour at Parducci Winery (the Greenest Winery in the US), Orr Hot Springs, Montgomery Woods old growth redwood grove, The Skunk Train, the Mendocino coastline, Anderson Valley wineries, Real Goods & Solar Living Center, The City of 10,000 Buddha's, Grace Hudson Museum, Steam and Roots of Power Museum, Lake Mendocino, Ukiah Golf Course and 90+ wineries across the county.

Local restaurants to visit include Patrona, Oco Time, Saucy, UnCorked, Ukiah Brewing Company, Ruen Thong Thai, North State St, Crush, Ellie's Mutt Hut, Schat's Bakery and too many Mexican Restaurants to mention.

You have your own private half bath and access to a shower in the main house. The kitchen in the main house is available for your use.

Check out time is 12:00 noon the next day unless other arrangements are made.

Guest Access

You have access to the pool in the warm months, our kitchen when needed, the sculpture studio (The Funny Barn), private walking trails in the woods, horse riding lessons, the garden (seasonal) and wine when you arrive!

Interaction with Guests

We will interact with our guests as much as they feel comfortable. If you need space, no issue....if you want company or where to find the hidden secrets in Mendocino County....we know them. However it works for you, it works for us.

The Neighborhood

We live in the country on a one lane dirt road. It is quiet, private and yet close to town (10 minutes). We have a 3 acre walnut orchard, riding arena, great garden on 5 acres and surrounded by much more. It is our slice of northern California heaven. Very blessed!

Getting around

No transit this rural. Mendocino County is the size of Scotland or Rhode Island and Delaware combined with 90,000 people in it. People come here to unplug, not plug in.

Other Things to Note

We will be happy to guide you all over the county to great hidden gems off the beaten track, of you can hibernate in the dead quiet Control Room for days....many have.

  • Spencer and Esther are some of the most welcoming and generous people I have ever met. I immediately felt right at home staying in their beautifully renovated recording studio. They opened my eyes to incredible music, art and food throughout my stay. We shared a few great meals together and had a wonderful time building sculptures and light instillations in their art barn. Spencer took Sam and I on a VIP tour of his local winery. He is an amazing musician and we were so lucky to hear him play his work. Esther is a wonderful cook, it was great to spend time with her in the kitchen and watch her ride horses out at the barn. Sam and I could not have asked for a better stay, it was like staying with family!

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Recording Studio. The property itself is beautiful, near vineyards, hiking trails, with lovely horses to marvel at. The room was warm, comfortable and unique. We enjoyed making music in the studio, which is conveniently sound proofed. Spencer and Esther were very gracious and kind, with helpful advice, guidance for attractions, restaurants and a much appreciated bottle of wine. We would love to come back here again. Thank you!!

  • Spencer and Esther are wonderful - so helpful, so kind and accommodating, and the room was awesome. Jam to tunes as loud as you want while drinking the bottle of wine Spencer will surely offer, wake up at dawn to walk around the property and feed the horses hay, sleep in until whenever you'd like (the bed is sooo comfy) and wake up to fresh strawberries or other fruit left out for you by Esther. they even let my boyfriend do some laundry as he is staying on a farm and was a bit smelly. : ) We hope to be back, and soon.

  • Esther & Spencer went above and beyond to make us welcome and we even received an impromptu tour of the converted studio with its many antiques & collectible items! This is an absolutely amazing place to stay and the bedroom is exceptionally quiet due to the sound proofing! Highly recommended for all!

  • The studio has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.

We only stayed one night, and there are almost too many awesome details to mention.

After Spencer greeted us and gave us a tour of the studio, he and Esther treated us to great local wine and garden-fresh vegetables. We also got to meet the horses, and had a glimpse at their workshop/artist studio.

The room is set up to watch DVDs from the bed with studio-quality sound, naturally. They’ve an awesome collection of movies, too.

To top it all off, the following day Spencer hooked us up with a tour of Parducci’s winery. It’s the only winery that has Redwood barrells, and again, you have to see them to believe them.

Spencer and Esther are too of the coolest, most eclectic folks we’ve ever met. It was absolutely awesome staying with them.

  • Spencer and Esther offered very warm and inviting hospitality in their home, kindly offering the use of their kitchen and free range in their garden, which was delightful. Yes, the sound system is amazing and we really enjoyed watching a DVD in bed. This place would be a super holiday for any musician!

  • Spencer and Esther are truly lovely hosts with a lot to offer. There are a number of fun activities built into a stay at their home (horseback riding and sculpture making to name a couple) or if you're looking for an adventure in the surrounding area they give excellent advice. We ended up doing almost nothing that would qualify as an "activity" but still had a great time eating dinner in and from the garden and listening to music in the incredible music studio. We had plenty of privacy when we wanted it but also appreciated and enjoyed conversing with Spencer and Esther when we got a chance. Not only are they nice and helpful they are also really interesting people! A stay on this property is a unique worthwhile experience!

  • Wow. This place is amazing! I would suggest to try to get here before dark as it's slightly difficult to find (GPS was only confused at the last bit). Spencer was so nice and hospitable, we were already planning on how to come back again and stay longer. The control room is so different and unique to every other place we've tried. A must for anyone with a love of music. Also loved the artwork and walking around the property. This is where we want to live!

  • I only met Spencer, and he was a very warm and inviting host. He gave me very helpful directions and places to go. I will be back! Great room and great bed. I was in late and out early. This was well handled by Spencer. Thank you for such a nice stay!

  • Spencer and Amy were extremely friendly and have such a unique and beautiful place. We felt like we got a genuine "wine-country" experience staying here. We loved the studio room, found the bed very comfortable, shower nice, and had a wonderful time at an evening concert at the vineyard where Spencer works. I would certainly recommend staying here!

Ringmaster at Parducci Wine Cellars & Paul Dolan Vineyards
Esther & I have lived in Mendocino County for 27 years and in CA for 30. We love good food, and exploring unique and different places. We live in the country with a barn and stables, surrounded by vineyards and mountains. I have been in the music business my whole life and now am a manager at a local winery as well as a concert/festival producer. Esther loves horses, connecting with people, creates one of a kind cards and is a marriage & family therapist. We both make 'found art' or assemblage sculptures and are always looking for weird stuff for our studio.
