About This Listing
The Recording Studio is a converted studio in a rustic country setting surrounded by vineyards and forests on five acres. Our place is quiet, beautiful, peaceful and full of art, music, horses and creativity. A perfect retreat to unplug and relax.
Stay in a converted recording studio in the country where many great records were made. Our guests say it was the quietest sleep they have had as the walls are 2' thick. You have your own private entrance. We are solar powered, on a well, situated on 5 serene acres and surrounded by vineyards. This is a rural getaway for unplugging.
An exquisite king bed is in the Control Room, a queen bed in the 'Isolation Booth' and a queen in a separate building off the house. Price quoted is for the main Control Room and there is a $45 fee for each extra room. Futon mattresses are available for extra people.
You have your own private half bath which is a toilet and sink. Shower access is in another bathroom which is in the main house. Included is a private coffee pot, tea pot, microwave, small fridge and a toaster oven. Water source is an artesian well. The host's kitchen is available for any meal preparation that you might need, just let us know.
Some of the artists who recorded here are Paul Winter, Holly Near, Alex de Grassi, Paul McCandless, Barbara Higbie, Kostia, Todd Philips, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Michael Manring, Joe Craven and many others. Lee Mun Wah's award winning films on racism (The Color of Fear, Last Chance for Eden, If These Walls Could Talk) were all filmed here.
Play the concert grand piano, guitars or percussion, take horseback riding lessons for a fee ($35 an hour-we have horses and a riding arena), swim in the pool (seasonal), climb on the indoor climbing wall, hike in the woods to the creek next to us, tour Mendocino county wineries (90+), and much more.
Wireless and cable hookup are throughout. Flat screen video and movies abound in surround sound in the Control Room. Listen to music on 1890's to 1930's gramophones and phonographs as well as spin some 33 vinyl records or CD's on a killer sound system. Read by Elvis 'Fat Boy' mic lights and wake up to complete silence.

Excellent atmosphere, great music selection, cozy and quiet bedroom. Lots of character. The bottle of wine was a great touch and the decor was super interesting and fun. We didn't get to meet Esther, but Spencer was very friendly and helpful. Hope to stay again soon.
Spencer and Esther were delightful hosts and we had a great stay! Comfy bed, great soundproof room (I slept so well). We didn't get to take advantage of many of the cool amenities of their house (horse riding lessons, etc.) because we were only in town briefly for a wedding, but S&E have a beautiful home and we wouldn't hesitate to stay with them again when we are in Ukiah.
We had a great stay at the Recording Studio. Spencer welcomed us in with a bottle of wine and made sure we had everything we need. We got some much needed rest in the darkness of the studio. In the morning, he showed us everything they have on property including their beautiful horses.
Thanks for everything,
Chris & Janna
We loved staying at the Recording Studio. So much peace and quiet, beautiful scenery and loved watching the horses roam and ride. We slept so soundly! My partner enjoyed playing several of the instruments. Five stars for Spencer's restaurant recommendations Oco Time and Patrona. Thanks for having us!
As all the previous reviews have described, the space Spencer and Esther have provided was beyond awesome. Such a cool spot with so much to see and they are such gracious and friendly hosts. I only wish we had longer to stay and explore the beautiful property and I'm bummed we didn't get an opportunity to see Spencer's tesla man. We will definitely be back to stay for a longer period of time!
Had a wonderful time staying here, Spencer is a fellow musician as well as a visual artist, I had to avoid bothering him too much. Beautiful pianos in perfect tune, comfortable, quiet, homey, eclectic, all around very relaxing. I will definitely be back, if Spencer and Esther will have me. Thanks for the stay!
My girlfriend and I came here for our annual pilgrimage to the Orr Hot Springs. We LOVED this place.
The room is spacious but feels completely cozy and homey. We read several reviews that talked about how quiet the space was and how well they slept in the room and let me tell you: it is 100% true. This rooms is silent and dark and exactly what this country girl who has been living in the city for too long was looking for! The one word of advice I would give to people who are thinking about staying here is: if you want to get an early start on your next day, make sure you set an alarm clock as it is incredibly easy to over-sleep in this space.
Esther and Spencer were great hosts. Esther gave us a thorough tour of the house and grounds and introduced us to the horses (we'll have to budget time for riding lessons on the next visit). And Spencer's "tour" of his classic and restored record players was a real highlight for me. Spencer also gave us a great tip on a simple nature walk nearby we never would have known about otherwise. They were also very accommodating in letting us keep our car at their house for an extra couple of hours while we did the walk.
The house is easy to get to, once you have the details, and is conveniently located for Orr, Montgomery Woods and the nearby towns.
Now that we're back, we're talking about making the Orr trip more than just an annual treat-- and Spencer & Esther's studio will definitely be our home base on any future visits!
About the Host, Spencer & Esther
We have lived in Mendocino County for 29 years. We love good food, and exploring unique and different places. We live in the country with a barn and stables, surrounded by vineyards and mountains.
I have been in the music business my whole life and now am a consultant for wineries, an artist as well as a concert/festival producer.
Esther loves horses, connecting with people, creates all kinds of cool art and is a marriage & family therapist.
We both make 'found art' or assemblage sculptures and are always looking for weird stuff for our studio.
