Guest access

In our house, you're welcome to use our kitchen. There is a refrigerator, stove, oven etc. We cook most meals at home and we are happy to share the kitchen with you and have breakfast, lunch and dinner together. We have four bathrooms with hot water in our house. We have a patio where you can enjoy the sun or have a bbq and wifi is available.

Interaction with guests

Meet our family: Pepe, Bertha, our kids Mateo and Luciana, and our dog Coco (the most adorable dog of South America!). Every week we organize all kinds of activities for our guests: volleybal, movie nights, Bolivian dinners, celebrations of the Bolivian national holidays and many more! Furthermore you´re always welcome to join for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We like to get to know our guests as much as possible. As well, we can facilitate Spanish classes at our school, volunteering opportunities and cultural excursions for you. We're happy to give you advice during your stay in Sucre and share our culture with you. Most of my family does not speak English, so it's a great opportunity for you to improve your Spanish skills.

Other things to note

We advice you to make Sucre your first destination within Bolivia. Next to the fact that it´s a great city to get familiar with the Bolivian culture, it´s also situated on a moderate altitude (2600m). Sucre is the ideal starting point to acclimatize to the high altitudes in Bolivia and Peru and from here on continue your travel smoothly to for example the salt flats in Uyuni or to La Paz.

The highlight of our trip! DON'T LOOK FURTHER, STAY THERE! One of the best Air b n b so far! THEY DON'T HAVE A SCHOOL IN THE CENTER ANYMORE. This is great as you will be assured to stay with this awesome family at their home! NOW EVERYTHING IS CONCENTRATED HERE, the family house, the new or renovated bedrooms and the school! Wether you are a couple, friends or solo traveller, this place is for you. We loved our stay so much that we decided to extend it! Berta, Pepe, Luciana, Mateo and Coco (the nicest dog ever) are a wonderful family! HOST Berta has been a fantastic host! Berta responded within few minutes when we requested to stay at her place and answered to all of our questions! Berta and her family made us feel like at home. When we arrived to do the check-in, we were 3 hours early but Berta and her family welcomed us so well! As it was Easter, they invited us to stay for lunch, they cooked for us and we shared it with other guests that were staying there too. LOCATION We hesitated to stay there as it was not right in the center but please don't let this point stoping you to book there! The family house is in a great location as it is within walking distance to the center. It is a short 15-20 minutes to the plaza de mayo but it only feels like a 8-10 minutes walk to the center as the walk is via a greeny and lively park and neighbourhood. In Sucre every time you want to take a taxi it only costs 5 bolivianos per person for the ride no matter where you are going so if you prefer to take a cab that is possible too. There is also a bus that drop you just near the house but we haven't used it. Close to Berta' s house there is a big supermarket and 10 seconds away from her home there is a small convenient store to buy drinks, snacks ... The house is very secure, there is a locked gate and there is also a lock on each room. Near the house there are few restaurants. There is also a small market every morning where they sell yummy empanadas from 8.30 - 11am. SPANISH CLASSES- NOT COMPULSORY Berta has regular teachers who can come and teach you directly at her house. It costs 45 Bolivianos per hour for a private tuition. Or 70 bolivianos per hour if you want to study in pair (35 bolivianos each per hour). You can choose how many hours you want to and they are usually very flexible. Not all guests decided to take Spanish lessons when we were there so if you just want to use this place to sleep (and meet great people if you want to) that's ok too! Marisol was an awesome teacher, so much that we extended our stay! I made lots of...

Ahhh where do I start? Well, first of all: we extended as one week at Bertha's & Pepe's Homestay is simply not enough! This is much more than just accommodation. It is a true Bolivian Cultural experience! First of all, the accommodation is exactly as described amd depicted on the photos -- cozy rooms, with comfortable beds and plenty of room! The Internet reaches the rooms also which is great for people who need the internet daily like me. Bertha is also a Spanish teacher and is a member of a renowned Spanish school in Sucre and offers affordable Spanish classes directly from the comfort of your own home -- here at the Homestay directly. There are daily Salsa classes taught by a renowned Salsa teacher (who also offers Private classes which are so worth it). The family also organizes cultural activities, movie nights and once in a while we cook and eat together. This has been one of the best experiences on my travels ever (i have been travelling for 3 years). But be careful -- you may not want to leave again....

Bertha and Pepe are very honest people. They welcomed us into their home and made our stay in Sucre very special. They were always available to give us advice and suggest activities they organise in Sucre, but respected our privacy as well. They created a fantastic communal atmosphere and the local social projects they're involved with introduced us to the "real" Bolivia. We recommend 100% to stay there if you want to step out of the usual hostel/backpacker routine and to learn or improve your Spanish.

We had a lovely stay at Bertha's place. The first 3 days we stayed in the school building and after that 6 days at Bertha's place in one of the new rooms. It was a perfect stay with a good balance between private space and family feeling. A couple of times we had dinner together and we even went to see a schoolplay of one of the kids! Downside is the early start of the contsruction every morning, but it looks like its almost finished so that will be over soon. We would recommend it!

I loved staying with Bertha, Peppe, Luciana and Matteo. They are such warm, welcoming people who genuinely love having guests and sharing their space. It was a great balance between having my own space and being part of the family. They are very inclusive, for example I was invited to Luciana and Matteo's school play. We enjoy watching films together and cooking together and Bertha organises many activities and seems to know everyone in the city so can help you organise things and get connected to the city. It's about a twenty minute walk to the centre, or 5 Bol taxi ride which is cheap. At the moment they are constructing a new building so work starts early for six days a week. The work will be finished early next year and the new building looks incredible...I can't wait to come back to visit!

Hi! My husband and I invite you to join our family during your time in Sucre. We live just a 20 minute walk from the main plaza (25 de Mayo) in Sucre. We live with our 7 year old son Mateo, our 4 year old daughter Luciana, my father-in-law, and our big, lovable dog Coco.

I run a Spanish school near the main plaza, and I speak English, Spanish, and Quechua. I'd be happy to arrange Spanish lessons with experienced teachers for you, and you are welcome to join in activities that we organize for our students such as weekend barbeques, sporting events, and cultural excursions (find our school also on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or on our website).

My husband works at a local NGO that runs an after-school program for low-income children, a hospital, a radio station, and more, and he is passionate about the terrific work they are doing to improve the lives of people in our community. My husband is also very enthusiastic about technology.

We love meeting travelers and sharing experiences with them; from time to time we also host students studying at my school. If you're interested in learning about Bolivia and truly experiencing life in Sucre, you'll have a great time staying with us.
