This RUSTIC mountain hut is the perfect mountain getaway! The trailhead is just 20 minutes from town. The actual hut is a 30 minute drive in summer. It sits at 11,000 feet and outdoor activities abound, in winter and in summer. In the summer you can drive to within 300 feet from it. There is NO running water and there is an outhouse. There is no cleaning fee and there may be evidence of mice. There is NO bedding provided. You need to bring your own water.

The space

Our Hut is located in the San Juan Mountains right below Fischer Mountain at 11,000 feet. It has a huge deck to enjoy the fabulous views of the valley below and large windows so even when you're inside, you feel as though you're outside. You will find this to be the ultimate spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. Keep in mind there is NO running water or electricity. There is a propane stove for cooking but no refrigeration. You will need to bring sleeping bags to sleep in and your own water. There is an outhouse about 100 feet from the hut.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire hut. Your group will be the only ones there when you rent it. There are hundreds of trails on the National Forest Land all around the hut. In the summer, you can drive to within 100 feet of the hut.

Other things to note

This hut is very comfortable but it is rustic! There is no running water, no electricity. In the winter, you melt snow and in the summer you bring your own water in. The outhouse is about 50 feet from the cabin and you have to climb 3 rungs up a ladder to get to it. It is private. There is no bedding. You will need to bring a sleeping bag. There may be evidence of mice. We have lots of cleaning products for you to use. This is a RUSTIC backcountry cabin!

I'm not sure that you can find a more secluded, relaxing place than this secret cabin in the woods. The views from the cabin are astonishing: the valleys, mountains and Rio Grande river can all be seen right from the deck of the cabin. Being located in US Forest Service land, there's absolutely no-one close by and you step into the vast expanse of nature right out of your front door! As mentioned many times in the description above: the cabin is rustic (and rightfully so). Be prepared to carry all of your clothes, sleeping bags and supplies up a hill to the cabin. Be sure to take enough water – not just for drinking but also for washing dishes. If you can't survive a few days without showering then this place is probably not for you (nevermind the outhouse which was in a bit of a state when we visited). Although there are enough cooking utensils and pots and pans, if you think you'll need a specific tool, bring it with you. Propane lanterns were not working when we were there so I'd suggest all visitors take plenty of headlamps. There is however a massive supply of tea candles for ambient light. The propane fridge was out of order when we were there so we'd recommend taking your own coolers and ice packs. All this being said, the cabin feels like a secret hideaway that only locals know about and once you've settled in, there no better place to clear the soul. We never had to engage the 4x4 in our SUV although the ground clearance certainly helped get over some tricky rocks towards the end of road to the cabin. I'd highly recommend Kerry's place for a relaxing adventure off the beaten path!

Amazing place. Fantastic hideaway. Unfortunately, the last person had left the place in a mess. So we spent our first evening cleaning the cabin. Fridge and woodburning stove both weren't functioning properly. Beware: Even though the road is marked as good for cars, our rental car was too low for the rocky road... some stressful moments!!!!

Kerry's place and the surrounding scenery was beautiful. The town of Creede itself is also a great place to explore and sit back and enjoy yourself; it was a very cute mountain town with plenty to offer, including quality food from Kip's Grill, a market for any supplies you might have forgot, and a gas station for travel in and out of town. It is only about 30 minute drive into town but it is well worth it for a day or two. The mountains surrounding the cabin were incredibly beautiful and the sunsets at night were just as great. The stars at night were also phenomenal. The outhouse even has great views! The cabin, inside, was perfect, and the loft was a great place to sleep. The propane stove was very useful for cooking meals. I would highly suggest this trip if you're looking to escape to the mountains and enjoy the wonderful fruits of Colorado.

The hut was very well stocked with kitchen supplies, chopped wood, and bedding. The wood stove heats the hut well and the views from the deck were amazing!

We are located in the town of Creede, Colorado, just 20 minutes from the hut. We are happy to meet with you before you head up to the hut or after your stay.

About Kerry

I have been living in Denver for the past ten years. After growing up outside of Philadelphia, spending 8 years in Maine and living all over the west (MT, AK, ID), Denver has become a great place to call home. The Stapleton community is a great balance between city and suburbs. We have great restaurants and trails for biking, walking and running are everywhere. The sand creek trail is right across the street from my house and you can run, walk, bike all the way downtown to REI and beyond on it.
I love the outdoors and Denver is very conducive to an outdoor focused lifestyle. I spend half of my time in a tiny town of 450 people in Creede, Colorado. I enjoy running and mountain biking the trails around Creede as well as floating on the Rio Grande River.
