I spent one year at James house. These twelve months have been extremely positive at several extents:
First, as a post-doc researcher at USC, the location of the house was just perfect (less than 15 minutes by bike to USC), within a nice neighborhood (West Adams Historic district, possibility to go running and play basketball), and with a very fair price.
Second, the house is huge. This means that, in addition to your room, you can easily find a place where to chill/work (e.g., in the library, at the patio) while having some privacy.
Third, the people. James was a great host. First of all, he is very respectful (always there for an advice, help). He is also a very interesting guy, with whom you I had some insightful discussions. The same goes for his wife, Sylvie, and for Kirk (James friend who lives in the house; a verrrry great guy, I still dream of his homemade cheesecakes!!). I've met also some very nice and interesting people amount the other guests. You can always spend a couple of minutes to chat or have drink with those guys. Besides, if you want some privacy: it is guaranteed!
To sum up, I spent a great year in LA at both professional and social levels and living at James' house played a big part in it.
Awesome place to stay!
Very friendly people, very clean bathrooms and common areas, very central area in LA!
Wish I could have been around the house more, but the time I spent there was always good!
Both James and Kirk are great hosts and I felt really good during my stay. The house is really big, clean and the room itself is very nice. My stay was work-related and since the house is very quiet, I managed to get a lot of work done. I definitely recommend this place. Thanks again and hopefully I will have a chance to return and stay again.
My first AirBnB experience and a very good one. James as well as Kirk are very, very nice hosts. They are always ready to help people around the house and to find your way through the neighborhood, LA and even the state. The house is clean enough and is nearby almost anything in LA. Parking on the street is perfectly safe and I never felt unsafe. The guests in the house usually live their own lives so during the day I never really saw them. Therefore it's perfect for (semi-) serious trips. If you're looking for a spot where there's parties everyday this is not your best choice. The house is very big and clean so there's room enough to do your own thing. In short; I'm very pleased with the choice I made.
So, my gut-feeling proved me right: This House is abs. wonderful! You are HOME the minute you enter the door. Harmony, and just a really special friendly, cool, peaceful atmosphere to this lovely two-story old craftsman-style house. Very spacious with lots of rooms, front- and backyard w. bbq and cosy siiting-areas, plus another anex/ guest house and apartment. Main house has two bathrooms, large living-rooms, big nice kitchen, laundry/dryer/ironning, cosy "libary" area, and not to forget the fancy pooltable/ bar area :-) etc. etc. Internet works well, no problem. Nice interiour, comfy and some antique and lots of wooden furniture, and a mix of family and cool historic movie/ theatre memorabilia, and just lots of things you need and that make you feel home... At the time I stayed in the very 'Lovely Room' we were a very jolly multicultural crowd of 9 people. And it worked out very well, totally. The house was always clean and tidy. And the housemates got along really great, always nice to chat with someone, hang out togehter when wanted/needed, or just peaceful 'me-times' in each our own rooms. The area West Adams itself is fine (though I didnt really explore the neighborhood itself too much...), nice big streets with craftsman-houses, popular movie-shooting location, e.g. SixFeetUnder house is really just next block - this all ads a nice feeling to the living-in-L.A.-experience. And the location is really perfect in the city of L.A. in general, as it is close to the 10/405Frwys, and everything you want to reach is really max 20mins from here, beach, downtown, Hollywood etc. I recommend a car though (there are apparently busses, metro etc. close -ish - but hey, this is L.A.!!). My 'Lovely Room' itself was bright, spacious, comfy bed, good mattress :-) in summer the 'coolest' room in the house (in general, the coolest room in the house, I think), quiet and just really nice and well-kept. James, la maitre, the host, the warden... is just charming :-) and welcomes you like a long known friend. He is very openhearted, honest and mindful and attentive for your wishes or needs, has always time for you if you might have any questions or wishes. He knows L.A. since 20+ years so he is really the best guide you can find. In general, you can feel he loves his house and the idea of airbnb, meeting all kinds of peoplefrom all kinds of places of the world - so he really does an outstanding job. He became a true good friend to me very quickly. The only sad thing at this place is really, when you are to check-out again... but my gut-feeling tells me, the day I leave, it won't take very long till I will be back again... :-) Thank you James - for everything /s.
James is a fine host, very thoughtful and easy going person. The house is in a great neighborhood. It was so convenient getting around town since he is located in a very central spot of LA.
Traffic is intense, but having the highway just a couple of blocks from James home made it very easy to drive out to any place...I went everywhere and it was always 20 to 30 minutes away, with traffic, for LA that not bad at all.
The house is huge and has great energy as well as history. The house has all you'd ever need when traveling, good wifi, parking out front, clean bathroom, quiet room, clean and very spacious. Great restaurants and super markets in the area. Awesome roommates!!!
Another plus was how secure I felt in the neighborhood, I left my rental car parked out front every night with the GPS unit inside and random things like Ipod cables and sunglasses, never a problem.
FYI-Ask James where to get the best street tacos in town, just 5 minutes from his place.
Don't think twice, book this place, you won't regret it!
I stayed at James for a week and it was a great experience. He was a very nice, caring host and made my friend and I feel just at home. The room and the whole house were very clean and nice to spend time in. So if you're looking for a nice, comfortable place to stay, this is the place for you.
