HISTORICAL NOTE: Summer Air Conditioning in Old Town
If you didn't live in an Italian old town maybe you don't know: thanks to the ancient building methods, walls are thick; this maintains the indoor temperature spontaneously fresh, even in the hottest days of the Florentine summer. Around midday the fan moves the air and refresh it furtherly, while in the night very relaxing fresh air comes from outdoor through our "persiane" (antique wooden shelter for the windows with a special shape; it is a traditional method of indoor air conditioning, coming from centuries ago); so that you'll feel always comfortable without needing to close the windows and turn on an electrical air conditioner.
TIP: Long Stays in Florence
Florence is a good base to live for a couple of weeks and more, exploring Tuscany and Italy with one day trips as a local resident does.
This is because of the following facts:
1) The location of Florence is strategically placed in the center of the main point of interests which go from Rome to the Alps.
2) Regional railways are quite efficient here, and they let you arrive from the Firenze SMN Station to all the big cities and almost all the famous small towns of Tuscany in a short time. For example: Pisa 1 hour, Lucca 1h20min, Siena 1h30min.
3) National high speed trains - so comfortable! - connect Florence and the major cities of Italy in a flash. For example Bologna 40min, Rome 1h30min, Milan 1h45min, Venice 2h. And their price starts from 9 euro for any destination, if you book in advance.
Long stays in Florence have also another advantage: they make you feel the Florentine atmosphere in the most complete way, with all the shapes and shades that different days offer.
About my apartment, Natural Home: it is located in a quiet district of the historical centre, and the Firenze SMN Railway Station is in the centre too (in a busier district). This means that you can catch the trains to any Tuscan and Italian destination with only a nice short walk across the central pedestrian area - I usually do it in around 15-20 min.
You will have access to the whole apartment, nothing is shared.
About the check-in: 4 pm is the time in which cleanings will finish, so that the apartment is completely available to stay, but the check-in can be done at any time within the following hours: from 11 am to 2 pm, and from 4 pm to midnight or later.
If the cleanings are not finished at your arrival you can leave the luggage at home, if it is useful, and return later to stay.
Please note that it is advisable to tell me an approximate arrival time with a reasonable advance, otherwise we could be outside and in this case, I'm sorry, you will have to wait for our return.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the same building, in another apartment; so, for any question, please knock our door (not so early in the morning, if possible :) or - if we are outside - leave a paper message near our door or write an Airbnb message or an email, which I check quite often.
Our district, Oltrarno, is known as the part of old Florence which maintains local activities and residents. There are good places to eat where Florentines usually go, unknown but so enchanting roads, and major monuments like Pitti, S. Spirito, S. Miniato and Ponte Vecchio.
The apartment is located at the beginning of the hilly road (2 minutes uphill by foot) which then proceeds to the views of Piazzale Michelangelo, Forte Belvedere and Giardino Bardini. Along this way lived and were inspired - among others - the residents Duprè, Galilei, Rosai, Pratesi and Tchaikovsky.
Taxi: we can call the taxi by phone and it arrives directly at home; or, there is a taxi rank at Ponte Vecchio (2 minutes walking).
Bus: the D line stop is also at Ponte Vecchio; this line crosses the centre from East to West, ending at the Firenze S.M.N. railway station, the main station in town.
Car parking: all the streets of the centre are reserved for residents; you can park in a guarded, paid parking at the beginning of our street (2 minutes walking) or in a free parking at the border of the centre (15 minutes walking).
Walking: when you visit the town from the apartment there is no need of transports, all the main centre is within 15 minutes range.
Firenze S.M.N. railway station: is at around 10 minutes by taxi (around 10 euro), or 15 minutes by bus (D line), or 20 minutes by foot.
Other Things to Note
I follow the Italian law regarding the transparency between host and guests in all the kinds of accomodation (hotel, b&b, apartment for rent), which states that at the check-in the guests have to show their valid identity document (the real, original one; a copy is not valid); the host have to register their data at the beginning of the stay and transfer them to the local town authorities.
I think there are only few obvious things to say here...
1) treat the home as your home
2) damages or losses for any property caused by the guest are paied by the guest
3) enjoy Florence and art!
...sorry, based on experience I have to add one more rule: please do not fry. Otherwise the fried parfum will apply on the wooden furniture for some days after you :|
