Welcome to Hale Ho'okipa (House of Rest and Refreshment)
I wanted to update everyone and say we have installed a NEW air conditioning unit in the bedroom/bathroom area. June, July, August tend to be our hottest months. Come take a breather and enjoy the beach and other amazing places here on the Island.
The unit is attached to the main house, yet fully private. It consists of one bedroom and one bathroom with shower, no tub. The bedroom and bathroom are on the same level. Just down stairs from the air conditioned bedroom is the living room area and fully equipped kitchenette (no oven) ~ Kona Coffee always on hand!
The entire unit, garden, and front lawn is private for your use only. Grocery stores, restaurants, internet cafes, churches, open markets, are all a few minutes away.
Our easy blowing trade winds often bring the windward Hilo side (East Hawaii) more clouds and rain, where our leeward Kona side (West Hawaii) of the Big Island is much dryer and tends to be sunnier and warm. (hot in the summer) We have eight micro-climates here on Hawai'i Island, ranging from desert-like areas to tropical rain forest, and even occasional snow at the tops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. If you like sunny and dry or tropical green and partly cloudy, we have it all here on Hawaii Island!
Hawai'i Island (affectionately known as the Big Island), is the largest and youngest in the chain of 8 inhabited Hawaiian Islands. Hale Ho'okipa is located only 3 hours from Kilauea volcano, erupting non-stop nearly 30 years now. Spend a day exploring Kilauea Volcano National Park, an easy day trip from the house. You will never forget it !*
Mauna Kea kuahiwi kuhao ika malie ~ Mauna Kea is the astonishing mountain that stands in the calm. Majestic 14,000 foot Mauna Kea ~ White Mountain ~ is only an hour and a half away ~ where sunsets are spectacular and viewing the heavens through enormous telescopes is unforgettable.
Gourmet Kona coffee and tea are grown nearby. Snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, deep sea fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and night time manta ray viewing are a few pacific activities we enjoy. A few hours away are beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails.
Kona is home to the IronMan Triathlon World Championships. The event takes place every 2nd Saturday in October. This ultimate endurance event - a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike and a 26.2 mile run - attracts near 2,000 of the world's best tri-athletes. Thousands of volunteers from around the world help make it a success.
Also nearby is Hulihe'e Palace, Moku'aikaua Church, ancient Petroglyph carvings, City of Refuge and other important Hawaiian historical sights.
Please be respectful of the land and it's people. Malama pono* Malama aina*!

Guests are welcome to use the washer and dryer located outside the unit -- in the garage area of the house. A barbecue grill is available in the private front lawn and garden area. We also have on hand some beach gear -- snorkels, face masks, fins, beach chairs, beach towels, and coolers. If the gear is not a good fit, there are several convenient shops to rent from in Kailua near the bay or at Honokohau Harbor.
Interaction with Guests
I am generally a private person who enjoys meeting people and plunging into the pacific as often as possible. My goal at Hale Ho'okipa is to provide visitors a retreat from the routine ~ to rest, re-create, and explore our beloved Island. If you'd like more information about the surrounding area, don't hesitate to contact me.
Located in a safe residential neighborhood. There is some road noise, though the large front lawn is a good buffer. Other sounds are the occasional rogue rooster, wild birds - cardinal, mynah, and papaya. Now and then turkey, mongoose, and wild pua'a (pig) wander off the slopes of Hualalai to visit.
There is no convenient public transportation. Taxi service is available 24/7. Best to rent a car. Parking for one car is available in the car port directly next to the front door.
Please be respectful of others. No loud music after hours and no smoking indoors. We appreciate that you rinse off beach sand and salt water before entering the unit. Mahalo !*

Our stay in Hawaii was absolutely perfect! Trish has a lovely home and it was perfect for my husband and I on our honeymoon. We really enjoyed the snorkel gear! The fact that she provided beach towels and mats were just one less thing we had to bring which was most helpful. The back yard is also very beautiful! I wish we had taken time to enjoy it more, but we were off on excursions. The countertop skillet and refrigerator make it easy for us to cook quick meals in between excursions. Her home is lovely and close to town and airport. We will definitely stay here again on our next visit!
I'm pretty torn about writing this one.... Trish is an extremely nice person, and a very warm and welcoming host. The place has a great layout, and the location is very convenient.
As for the negative things... The AC was broken when we got there, which kind of sucked because it having AC was a main criteria for picking this place. Also, the bedroom (and many of the fabrics in the house) smelled very much of mold/mildew, which was actually so bad that we left half way through out stay to move to a hotel.
I might be very picky here, because I'm allergic to mold and have trouble breathing when it's around, but for me, it just didn't work.
Seeing as nobody else complained about this in the previous reviews, I can only imagine this is a recent thing, maybe because of the broken AC (which means leaving the windows open all day, and therefore of course inviting lots of moisture in).
Also, the place is on the corner of a (for Hawaii) busy highway, so you get a lot of road noise throughout the night (but again, if the AC was working, we could have just closed the window and not have any problems with it).
So all in all, it's a nice place, but it really needs the AC fixed and all fabrics cleaned and aired out.
Thank you so much for your feedback. I'm so sorry that your mold allergy contributed to your stay at Hale Ho'okipa being less than wonderful: my goal for every visitor who stays here. Strangely, the linens were all washed and dried thoroughly prior to your arrival as they are between every guest's stay. To be safe, the bedding will all be replaced. We don't want to take any chances.
Though Hawaii is a humid place, as you said we have never had complaints regarding mold before. It is quite possible, as you suggest, that were it working, the air conditioner might have made things drier in the rental. I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience, especially since it is an amenity listed on the profile. The air conditioner is now in the process of being fixed so as to ensure the maximum level of comfort for our future guests. My sincerest apologies again, that the issue was not discovered in time to fix before your arrival.
Mahalo nui for your feedback, Thomas. While I'm sorry your stay was less than ideal, it was a pleasure having you and your wife at Hale Ho'okipa. We'll do our best to act on your input so as to continue to provide the relaxing, comfortable experience our visitors have come to expect. As we say in Hawaii:
Me ke Aloha,
We just came back from Big Island and had a wonderful time. Trish is the sweetest person you can meet, she went beyond hosting us and made everything to make us feel comfortable and welcome.
The apartment is well located, close to many stores, but off enough (by few minutes) to make us feel out of the tourist buzz. It was clean, functional and comfortable and her garden is lovely. We enjoyed sitting there at the end of the day for a glass of wine, appreciating the peace and landscaping (absolutely gorgeous).
We did hear the traffic on the first night, as we live in a very calm neighborhood, but it didn't bother us at all for the rest of the stay.
I can not say enough good words about Trish, really a fabulous human being. We had also opportunity to meet her friends and were treated by some home baked mango bread made by her son. I still want the recipe for that!! :)
We do recommend the stay and plan to come back when we are back in the Big Island.
Thank you so much, Trish and G!!

About the Host, Trish
Born and raised in the Islands, I lived abroad a good number of years, raised 2 amazing sons, and am home again in the Islands. I have a deep love and respect for this place and the lahui (people) of Hawaii. I enjoy swimming alongside our ancient and graceful honu (turtle), hiking the waterfalls of Waipio, and never tire of the magic and awe inspiring nature of our volcanoes. Today I'm thankful to be helping travelers enjoy the wonder of this place too!
