Welcome to Hale Ho'okipa (House of Rest and Refreshment)
Aloha, we have installed a NEW air conditioning unit in the bedroom/bathroom area. June, July, August tend to be our hottest months. Come take a breather and enjoy the beach and other amazing places here on the Island.
The unit is attached to the main house, yet fully private. It consists of one bedroom and one bathroom with shower, no tub. The bedroom and bathroom are on the same level. Just down stairs from the air conditioned bedroom is the living room area and fully equipped kitchenette (no oven) ~ Kona Coffee always on hand!
The entire unit, garden, and front lawn is private for your use only. Grocery stores, restaurants, internet cafes, churches, open markets, are all a few minutes away.
Our easy blowing trade winds often bring the windward Hilo side (East Hawaii) more clouds and rain, where our leeward Kona side (West Hawaii) of the Big Island is much dryer and tends to be sunnier and warm. (hot in the summer) We have eight micro-climates here on Hawai'i Island, ranging from desert-like areas to tropical rain forest, and even occasional snow at the tops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. If you like sunny and dry or tropical green and partly cloudy, we have it all here on Hawaii Island!
Hawai'i Island (affectionately known as the Big Island), is the largest and youngest in the chain of 8 inhabited Hawaiian Islands. Hale Ho'okipa is located only 3 hours from Kilauea volcano, erupting non-stop nearly 30 years now. Spend a day exploring Kilauea Volcano National Park, an easy day trip from the house. You will never forget it !*
Mauna Kea kuahiwi kuhao ika malie ~ Mauna Kea is the astonishing mountain that stands in the calm. Majestic 14,000 foot Mauna Kea ~ White Mountain ~ is only an hour and a half away ~ where sunsets are spectacular and viewing the heavens through enormous telescopes is unforgettable.
Gourmet Kona coffee and tea are grown nearby. Snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, deep sea fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and night time manta ray viewing are a few pacific activities we enjoy. A few hours away are beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails.
Kona is home to the IronMan Triathlon World Championships. The event takes place every 2nd Saturday in October. This ultimate endurance event - a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike and a 26.2 mile run - attracts near 2,000 of the world's best tri-athletes. Thousands of volunteers from around the world help make it a success.
Also nearby is Hulihe'e Palace, Moku'aikaua Church, ancient Petroglyph carvings, City of Refuge and other important Hawaiian historical sights.
Please be respectful of the land and it's people. Malama pono* Malama aina*!

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2 KJB
Guests are welcome to use the washer and dryer located outside the unit -- in the garage area of the house. A barbecue grill is available in the private front lawn and garden area. We also have on hand some beach gear -- snorkels, face masks, fins, beach chairs, beach towels, and coolers. If the gear is not a good fit, there are several convenient shops to rent from in Kailua near the bay or at Honokohau Harbor.
Interaction with Guests
I am generally a private person who enjoys meeting people and plunging into the pacific as often as possible. My goal at Hale Ho'okipa is to provide visitors a retreat from the routine ~ to rest, re-create, and explore our beloved Island. If you'd like more information about the surrounding area, don't hesitate to contact me.
Located in a safe residential neighborhood. There is some road noise, though the large front lawn is a good buffer. Other sounds are the occasional rogue rooster, wild birds - cardinal, mynah, and papaya. Now and then turkey, mongoose, and wild pua'a (pig) wander off the slopes of Hualalai to visit.
5 minutes from the house you will find local favorite restaurants like: Splashers, Huggos on the Rocks, Big Island Grill, and Fish Hopper. Also, we are 10 minutes from the King Kamehameha Hotel where one of the BEST Luau's (Hawaiian Feast) are held every week. The hotel is also host to the annual Kona IronMan Triathlon Championships.
There is no convenient public transportation. Taxi service is available 24/7. Best to rent a car. Parking for one car is available in the car port directly next to the front door.
Please be respectful of others. No loud music after hours and no smoking indoors. We appreciate that you rinse off beach sand and salt water before entering the unit. Mahalo !*
We had a great time at Trish's place in Kailua Kona. Her hospitality was outstanding. She was very welcoming and gave us many tips on restaurants and sights in the area. She made herself available if we had questions or concerns. Her place was spacious, modern, clean and well located to enjoy Kona and the area. A paradise spot!
Trish and her place was great. The location was perfect for my boyfriend and I. It is close to the airport which was nice after an exhausting day of travel from New Hampshire. And, it was just a short drive away from restaraunts and attractions. We spent the weekend at Trish's mostly just exploring the west side of the island. The apartment was homey and Trish was so welcoming and helpful. Although we didn't spend much time at the apartment besides to sleep, it had just about all we needed. There wasn't much for shampoo so we needed to get that, but there was plenty of towels, water and other toiletries. Moreover the air conditioner was much appreciated for us northerners who are babies when it comes to heat. It worked great for us! For future guests, just know that the wireless Internet is very slow and we couldn't stream Netflix because of this. This was really not an issue for us, because again we mostly just used the place to sleep.
We should have listened to the words of the most recent past reviewer, as we felt the same... "we were a little disappointed after we arrived as the pictures definitely made the place look much nicer and brighter than it ended up being. From the wall material, to the flooring and the overall cleanliness feel we just had higher expectations based on the pictures”.
The displayed photos and the reality appeared completely different on face value. On closer examination and comparison it was clear to see that most of the furnishings were the same, albeit in a different spot, there has also been new furnishings added, which give the place a cluttered feeling. The place was never as bright during our stay as displayed in the photographs.
On a much more positive note the place has a beautiful big garden and we enjoyed eating our breakfast surrounded by the hawaiian tropical plants. There were plenty of towels provided and the location is perfect for visiting the coffee farms, Hula Daddy Coffee Farm is just up the road, and then Kailua-Kona is a short drive down the highway.
Although conveniently located it wasn’t what we were expecting, and if the photos had shown the place as is, we probably wouldn’t have stayed there.
Aloha Bobak, I am very sorry you did not enjoy the furnishings and look of the unit. There is a photo of the new pareau - or fabric wall hanging in the kitchen - in the listed photos. So sorry you missed it. A tv on the wall was added, along with a removable folding table below it. Perhaps this is what gave you a "cluttered" feel. We have been blessed with more rain this season than we are used to - the interior was darker than normal when you arrived because of it. We are continually upgrading as we are able - next time you arrive the flooring will be new and different. Though I must say, the rubber mats are always cleaned after each visit - slippers often stick to the rubber mats when they have just been cleaned. Very happy you enjoyed the Island. Hawai'i Island is the Healing Island. All the very best to you and Karolina.

We stayed in Trish's home for three nights. Upon arrival, she came out and kindly greeted us and walked us through the place. She also offered for us to use her washer and dryer. Trish was very kind, gentle, welcoming, and so sweet.
The place...this is very hard to write but we were a little disappointed after we arrived as the pictures defiantly made the place look much nicer and brighter than it ended up being. From the wall material, to the flooring and the overall cleanliness feel we just had higher expectations based on the pictures. The place is nice, and very spacious. The bedroom and bathroom were up a few steps which was nice being separate. It also had a brand new air conditioner so sleeping was amazing and cool. When the air conditioner was not running the bedroom had a musty smell after about the second day, but we also didn't open the windows in that room trying to keep it cool. The place has a number of fans which helps cool it down, as well as windows. We also enjoyed using the full cable TV. The entrance is private and the private yard was HUGE and very nice!!! We battled tiny ants and a couple roaches, but this is pretty expected with it being so wet I am assuming. Trish had ant an roach spray in the place which was nice. There were plenty of towels, beach towels, snorkeling gear, etc. We did enjoy our stay. The place in conveniently located and close to town. With that being said, it's also right on the highway which was rather noisy, but with the air conditioner on in the bedroom we didn't hear the road noise, only when we were in the living room.
Hi Wendy, the place is cleaned thoroughly with bleach after each visit. A tv and removable folding table was added - giving the place a different feel. The flooring we hope to upgrade very soon. Thank you for coming. We hope you enjoyed the Big Island we gratefully call, The Healing Island. All the very best,

Our stay in Hawaii was absolutely perfect! Trish has a lovely home and it was perfect for my husband and I on our honeymoon. We really enjoyed the snorkel gear! The fact that she provided beach towels and mats were just one less thing we had to bring which was most helpful. The back yard is also very beautiful! I wish we had taken time to enjoy it more, but we were off on excursions. The countertop skillet and refrigerator make it easy for us to cook quick meals in between excursions. Her home is lovely and close to town and airport. We will definitely stay here again on our next visit!
About the Host, Trish
Born and raised in the Islands, I lived abroad a good number of years, raised 2 amazing sons, and am home again in the Islands. I have a deep love and respect for this place and the lahui (people) of Hawaii. I enjoy swimming alongside our ancient and graceful honu (turtle), hiking the waterfalls of Waipio, and never tire of the magic and awe inspiring nature of our volcanoes. Today I'm thankful to be helping travelers enjoy the wonder of this place too!
