Explore the Big Island! 10 minutes from town center and Kailua pier. 1 bdrm/1 bath, split-level with kitchenette, garden, pkg, beach gear and more. Welcome IronMen Triathletes Oct 10! Ask me about things to do & where to shop & eat.
Welcome to Hale Ho'okipa (House of Rest and Refreshment) The unit is attached to the main house, yet fully private. It consists of one bedroom and one bathroom with shower, no tub. The bedroom and bathroom are on the same level. Just down stairs from the air conditioned bedroom is the living room area and fully equipped kitchenette (no oven) ~ Kona Coffee always on hand!
The entire unit, garden, and front lawn is private for your use only. Grocery stores, restaurants, internet cafes, churches, open markets, are all a few minutes away.
Our easy blowing trade winds often bring the windward Hilo side (East Hawaii) more clouds and rain, where our leeward Kona side (West Hawaii) of the Big Island is much dryer and tends to be sunnier and warm. We have eight micro-climates here on Hawai'i Island, ranging from desert-like areas to tropical rain forest, and even occasional snow at the tops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. If you like sunny and dry or tropical green and partly cloudy, we have it all here on Hawaii Island!
Hawai'i Island (affectionately known as the Big Island), is the largest and youngest in the chain of 8 inhabited Hawaiian Islands. Hale Ho'okipa is located only 3 hours from Kilauea volcano, erupting non-stop nearly 30 years now. Spend a day exploring Kilauea Volcano National Park, an easy day trip from the house. You will never forget it !*
Mauna Kea kuahiwi kuhao ika malie ~ Mauna Kea is the astonishing mountain that stands in the calm. Majestic 14,000 foot Mauna Kea ~ White Mountain ~ is only an hour and a half away ~ where sunsets are spectacular and viewing the heavens through enormous telescopes is unforgettable.
Gourmet Kona coffee and tea are grown nearby. Snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, deep sea fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and night time manta ray viewing are a few pacific activities we enjoy. A few hours away are beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails.
Kona is home to the IronMan Triathlon World Championships. The event takes place every 2nd Saturday in October. This ultimate endurance event - a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike and a 26.2 mile run - attracts near 2,000 of the world's best tri-athletes. Thousands of volunteers from around the world help make it a success.
Also nearby is Hulihe'e Palace, Moku'aikaua Church, ancient Petroglyph carvings, City of Refuge and other important Hawaiian historical sights.
Please be respectful of the land and it's people. Malama pono* Malama aina*!
Hele Mai ! (come on in)
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2 KJB
Guests are welcome to use the washer and dryer located outside the unit -- in the garage area of the house. A barbecue grill is available in the private front lawn and garden area. We also have on hand some beach gear -- snorkels, face masks, fins, beach chairs, beach towels, and coolers. If the gear is not a good fit, there are several convenient shops to rent from in Kailua near the bay or at Honokohau Harbor.
Interaction with Guests
I am generally a private person who enjoys meeting people and plunging into the pacific as often as possible. My goal at Hale Ho'okipa is to provide visitors a retreat from the routine ~ to rest, re-create, and explore our beloved Island. If you'd like more information about the surrounding area, don't hesitate to contact me.
Located in a safe residential neighborhood. There is some road noise, though the large front lawn is a good buffer. Other sounds are the occasional rogue rooster, wild birds - cardinal, mynah, and papaya. Now and then turkey, mongoose, and wild pua'a (pig) wander off the slopes of Hualalai to visit.
There is no convenient public transportation. Taxi service is available 24/7. Best to rent a car. Parking for one car is available in the car port directly next to the front door.
Please be respectful of others. No loud music after hours and no smoking indoors. We appreciate that you rinse off beach sand and salt water before entering the unit. Mahalo !*

Trish was a fantastic host and the Hale was comfortable, peaceful and even nicer than described. My husband and I loved hanging out in the bright and airy living room in the mornings to plan out our day. This is a perfect home base for exploring the Kona area. It was a quick drive or cab ride into downtown but secluded enough from the bustle of the main drag. Easy access to grocery stores/shops etc. Trish was extremely welcoming and responsive to any questions we had during our five day stay. We hope to stay with her again next time our travels take us to the area!
Trish was there to greet us even though we were later than we had expected.
The apartment was clean and spacious for 2 people. The yard was a good added space. It was easy to keep the air cool with the ceiling fans and the screen door.
The time to the Harbor and its activity and services
was at most 10 minutes including locating a parking spot.
The bed was comfortable and the shower was large.
Trish is an incredibly warm and gracious host, the location is central and quiet, and the apartment is a peaceful and restful sanctuary from the bustle of city life on the mainland!
The apartment is a beautiful space, and I appreciated how the bedroom is separated from the living room and kitchen areas, with a sliding door and curtains for increased privacy. The bed is very comfortable, and the bedroom has air conditioning while a fan does the job in the common areas. Other reviewers have noted the nearby highway--and honestly I am usually a bit of a stickler about that sort of thing--but the 10 nights I was there, it never bothered me a bit. Parking is available in the driveway, and I also appreciated the access to the washer and dryer during my stay as well.
Trish is very communicative (loved the time and care she took to give me a thorough tour of the place when I first arrived!), and she always made herself available while also respecting my space and privacy. As a young woman traveling solo to the Big Island, I felt safe and comfortable, and I treasured the opportunity to meet and spend a little time getting to know Trish over coffee one morning during my stay. I know that I will definitely be back at Trish's for future visits, and I am so grateful for her hospitality and kindness during my travels. Mahalo!
Trish was an extremely warm and generous host. She was very responsive to questions via text, gave us lots of information on the area when asked, and provided us with privacy.
The apartment was the perfect home base for the two of us to explore the Big Island. It was the perfect size for two; I think it would feel tight with more people. The bed was very comfortable. Everything was extremely clean. The kitchenette and grill outside allowed us to prepare some delicious simple meals. I really appreciated having access to Trish's washer and dryer.
Having beach chairs, snorkel gear, and coolers provided was a nice bonus. We were able to enjoy many picnics and great days on the beach.
The neighborhood is very conveniently located to grocery stores, Costco, shops, beaches, and the major highways. There is a bit of street noise from the busy road out front, but it never bothered us. The roosters roaming the neighborhood woke us a few times, so pack ear plugs if you're a light sleeper.
This is a quaint, charming, comfortable place to stay while enjoying all the Big Island has to offer.
This was my first Airbnb experience and Trish made it so special and unique that I cant imagine traveling another way from now on. We had arrived after a long day of hiking 16.5 miles to see the lava flows which was exhilarating but also very tiring. After which we drove from Hilo, putting us in around 11 pm. Despite us being so late (sorry again Trish), Trish greeted us warmly into her beautiful home, showed us around, and even supplied noodles for us to enjoy a warm meal after an exhausting day. Her home was an incredible treat, as it offered all the comforts of home from a kitchen, clean sheets and towels, to the amazing backyard which had a beautiful view overlooking Kona and the ocean. My only regret is not staying longer. Thank you Trish, for your hospitality and open arms.
Born and raised in the Islands, I lived abroad a good number of years, raised 2 amazing sons, and am home again in the Islands. I have a deep love and respect for this place and the lahui (people) of Hawaii. I enjoy swimming alongside our ancient and graceful honu (turtle), hiking the waterfalls of Waipio, and never tire of the magic and awe inspiring nature of our volcanoes. Today I'm thankful to be helping travelers enjoy the wonder of this place too!
