As we got to Aveiro under heavy rain, João Carvalho was waiting for us in his grey Volvo. Maria was in Lisbon assisting her mother. Generously, João took us on a car tour through the whole town, patiently stopping in picture perfect spots and answering all our questions about the region. We drove by the harbor with it's fishing boats and the largest bacalhau drying factories in Portugal; visited Aveiro's beautiful beaches with it's historic and oddly stripped fishermen houses; he took us to a fantastic (almost hidden) "confeitaria" which sold the very best "ovos-moles" d'Aveiro for which the town is known. Already feeling like friends, we finished sharing a delicious and very affordable lunch at a local restaurant which i doubt any tourist would be able to find. What a host!
Well. the apartment was at the same level. Large, immaculately clean, fully equipped, very cozy and comfortable even better than the pictures show. It was perfectly located at a few steps from the beautiful tiled old train station and very close to the historic center of town. It was winter, the weather was dreadful, but somehow, we left the town with a wonderful feeling making plans to come back for summer. Maria and João are the best hosts you can hope for and the apartment is wonderful.
