Sitting on seven acres surrounded by woods, quiet and seclusion is easy to find. The house is only 20 minutes to downtown Knoxville providing convenient access to dozens of restaurants and the growing brewpub scene.

A great place to host families during football season, a quiet weekend getaway from Knoxville, or wherever you call home.

The space
"Turtle Rock Retreat is a hidden gem! Obviously an old family home, you walk in to all the character of a long ago time, with all the warmth and comfort of a modern farm house."
- Laura

"This is a super cool, old home in a secluded location. Perfect escape for a writer, someone looking for comfy peace & quiet, a time to reconnect with your family, etc. without interruption from modern day distractions." - Amber

Turtle Rock Retreat has been in our family for fifty years. The house originally hosted the head of the Holston zinc mine and visiting guests. Southeast of the house you can see what's left of the dormitory where unmarried miners lived. Please don't venture inside the foundation, but feel free to examine from the outside!

What is now the dining room and a large sitting area was originally the mess hall for the unmarried miners. Additionally there is a smaller dining area attached to the kitchen, and a bathroom and shower at the end of the hallway that connects the kitchen and fireplace room.

The fireplace room is our favorite place in the house, and we hope you'll enjoy it as well. Feel free to use our wood as available from the porch, but please be careful managing the fire, and be sure to close the fireplace doors before going to bed. In addition to the fireplace, the home is heated with a 40,000 BTU oil heater and space heaters in the bedrooms and kitchen.

Upstairs you'll find five bedrooms, including three queens and two double beds, and a second bathroom with bath and shower.

In addition to the wraparound porch that looks over a hollow that descends to the creek, you may wish to spend time on the back patio. You might also wish to take a walk around the property, or sit in the secluded field south of the house and just east of Staff Loop.

If you wish to take a walk in the woods, feel free, but WATCH OUT FOR POISON IVY. We hope someday to have this plant, and the kudzu, under control, but it is a work in progress.

Turtle Rock Retreat is on a quiet loop attached to Staff Drive, which once housed much of the staff of the Holston mining company. Today the neighbors are a mix of aging residents and new transplants. Neighbors are friendly but mostly keep to themselves. Feel free to introduce yourself and say hello if you see them out walking, but don't feel it's necessary.
