Located at the edge of the jungle, with howler monkeys you can hear every AM and at dusk, and iguanas and other critters around, El Sueno Tropical is an intimate 16 room resort set in almost 3 acres of tropical gardens. There are 4 buildings that house 4 units per building. There are 8 standard rooms with two twins, or a king or queen bed, 4 deluxe rooms with 2 queens beds or a queen and 2 twin beds, and 4 two bedrooms apartments, with a queen or king in each bedroom, some have 2 twins in the second bedroom, and all have a twin in the living room, sleep up to 5. We have a portacrib available for tiny ones. We are secluded but walking distance to the village of Estrada, old-time Costa Rica at its best, all our staff walk to work from there. We are on a bus route to Carrillo and Samara, and from there to all of the country. All rooms and apartments are beautifully decorated, and have cold A/C, ceiling fans, mini refrigerator (full size refrigerator and cooking facilities in the apartments), 24" TV with cable, and coffee makers, with a hammock hanging in each front porch, and also high speed WiFi throughout the property. Online working or social media catchup by the pool is the way to live. There is a free-form Italian tiled pool and a separate smaller pool for kiddies or adults to chill. We are located close to 3 world-class beaches-beautiful Playa Carrillo, which is a sheltered bay with small waves, great for kids, stand up paddling, and offshore world-class fishing, great place for a sunset swim as well; Samara is well-known for shopping, bars and restaurants, a small touristy beach; Camaronal is a well-kept secret, undeveloped, incredible right break for world class surfing, and it is a turtle refuge with arrivadas or desovadas, the laying of eggs, then the births about 20 days later. El Sueno Tropical is a short distance to many area activities, zip line/canopy tour/rappeling, ocean and river kayaking, surfing and standup paddle boarding, dolphin watching and snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, hiking, bike, scooter, motorcycle and ATV rentals, 4 x 4 adventure tours, gyrocopter tours, cooking, dancing and Spanish language classes, inshore and offshore fishing with professional captains or the fisherman who does it every day for a living, or you may want to stay in and relax by the pool with drinks served poolside. Hotel El Sueno Tropical offers many wonderful amenities including 2 swimming pools, restaurant and full bar. Great food, tapas, grilled fish and meats, and a brick lined pizza oven with over 30 types to choose from, all creatively prepared from fresh local ingredients--exotic fruits and vegetables, catch of the day seafood, grass fed beef, pork, and poultry. Good stuff!
Lots of wildlife to see on the property and be sure to hand feed our pet deer, we have three on site, Rosie, Bruiser and Spike.
Also nearby is La Selva Bromelia Gardens and Animal Rescue Center to see a lot of the local wildlife. 4:00 is a good bet--feeding time!
Enjoy laid-back luxury at El Sueno Tropical!
We can arrange weddings or vow renewals at sunset in Playa Carrillo, we had one last December, catered, with flowers and palms. We provided a hairdresser, manicure and makeup for the bride, and we can do it for the groom as well (;-)

Under new ownership since December 1, 2013, so disregard any older reviews on Trip Advisor, and we have a couple already here on airbnb. Also, if you look to your right and click on "Jose", you can read about our sister property, Vida Tropical Bed and Breakfast in Alajuela, since 1999. The perfect stop-over as you start or end your trip to Costa Rica. We promise the same level of attention and service at our new location.
Smoking is not permitted in rooms or restaurant by law. In an effort to conserve water and energy, linens and towels will normally be changed every three days of your stay. Just let us know if you need something sooner. We allow well behaved small pets, same with kids and adults, too.
José is a very nice guy and the B&B is a lovely place close to nature. However, there are also things to mention:
- Firstly, it is NOT located where indicated on the Airbnb map. We were looking for a place close to the beach and were kind of depressed, when we finally found it... 3.4 km away from the beach!
- Secondly, the room has probably seen better times. Particularly the bed was already very soft and hanging.
Finally, the bathroom was not the cleanest place we have seen.
Overall, if you are looking for some remote and reasonable lodging and have not the highest expectations, you might be happy with Suneo Tropical.
i have tried to get airbnb to change the map w no luck, there are no hotels or restaurants or anything other than coconut trees on the beachso we have a disclaimer about it on the description, and it is only a 2 minute drive
re the bed, yo are right, and we have changed it, wished you would have said something while u were here
re the bathroom, the housekeeper has been whipped for missing a few spots
the hotel and rooms are 20 years old, but have new ac units, new flat screen led tv w cable, new mini fridges and coffeemaker, new paint, new hammock on the porch, new bedding, the landscaping is well kept, the pool sparkling and the restaurant world class, it is not a cookie cutter hilton, and the price reflects the value received
thanks for the comments about me and the lovely nature that surrounds us, it is appreciated
This stop was a breath of fresh air during our two week stay in Costa Rica. More for the staff than the establishment although the establishment was beautiful and without measure. Jose was more than accommodating after a slight booking mis-communication, and the remainder of the staff went out of their way to help us in all ways possible even though we were only there for one evening. I would easily stay here again or recommend anyone to stay here.
We went during high season in Costa Rica, but you would never have known that to be the case in this little haven - we were hidden away in a peaceful, verdant paradise with hammocks in every corner (and lots of board games that we didn't get a chance to play!). Not to mention a brilliant Italian chef who offered an Italian feast of crab and fish that well surpassed high-end restaurants in NYC.
The best part, though, was the host, Jose, who treated us like we were family, and graced us with his company into the wee hours of the night over many glasses of wine and laughter. Jose went well beyond what was expected to make us comfortable - when we weren't happy with our original room, he moved us immediately, and when we realized that we needed to leave for San Jose earlier than expected, arranged alternate accommodations at his other B&B for no charge.
All in all, an unforgettable experience, one that we will treasure, and take with us back to our hectic lives in NYC. Thank you, Jose!!!! :o)
Room Tip: Choose a room away from the pool and bar / restaurant area to minimize noise!
Bel endroit pour relaxer et près de la playa Carrillo, très belle plage où l'on peut se baigner avec de beaux palmiers. La piscine de l'hôtel est entourée d'arbres, et le restaurant est bon. Les chambre sont simples, corrects.
Coudn't stay there. got refound. great service
Jose and the entire staff made us feel so welcome and relaxed. The room was very clean, comfortable and the food was excellent. The grounds were beautiful and relatively close to our favorite beach - Carillo - my husband ran there one morning. We can't wait to go back and visit.

I was born in Cuba, raised in Florida, moved to Costa Rica in 1997, love to read, travel, grow stuff to cook it and eat it, surf the Net, opened Vida Tropical in 1999, have great people helping: Isabel, my manager for 6 years, is from Colombia, married to Norman, New Yorker from Colombian parents, he owns Jalapeño Central Tex Mex Restaurant in Alajuela. Their son is Nico, born in Costa Rica. Sylvia, from Costa Rica, has been our housekeeper and cook for 10 years. Adilio (Pilo) is also Costa Rican and is there covering late arrivals (after 8) and early departures (from 3 to 7 AM), I'm there only part of the time, the rest I spend now in my new place in Playa Carrillo. We all enjoy meeting the great variety of guests from all over the world. We have one of the world's best breakfasts at both places, with 4 or 5 types of fresh fruit, orange juice, high altitude coffee and assorted teas, white and brown sugar and milk, corn flakes and granola, several kinds of bread for toast, several kinds of homemade jams and jellies, eggs any style, poached, sunny side up, over easy, scrambled, omelettes, frittatas, your choice of plain or with smoked cheese, garlic, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, smoked ham or country sausage, French toast and pancakes with or without fruit or chocolate chips, honey, syrup and Nutella. Include also if you wish a serving of our own version of Gallo Pinto, a mix of rice and beans seasoned with diced veggies and our secret mix of spices, Balsamic vinegar and Lizano sauce, the Costa Rican version of Worcestershire sauce, mighty tasty stuff.
