This room is Nectar Bridge and the only bedroom to have an antique clawfoot tub. Nectar has a hard wired smoke detector, an Emerson Eco fan, great views from all windows, sheer curtains, a keyed lock and your own private entrance. Of course, you will have access to all the guest amenities in the upstairs River Hall commons area. Your hot, fresh ground coffee is served at the kitchen counter beginning at 7am. Breakfast is served at 8am in the dining area.
See our other listings for photos that pertain to the upstairs guest rooms.
We do have our business license are are members of the Blount County Chamber of Commerce.
Property overview: This is an amazing concrete home with three more bedrooms upstairs with a queen bed in each, their own private ensuite showers, and views of the forests or across the valley. We custom designed our mattresses, and they are firm, but not hard.
This is a working blackberry farm with rough hiking trails for the adventurous and rocking chairs on the front porch for those who think fresh-ground gourmet coffee is all the excitement they need.
Allergy info: a small short-haired dog looking for new friends and a large cat looking for more servants are in residence. This is a drug-free, non-smoking and nearly fragrance-free facility. Also, since this is a totally electric home there are no gas, propane or wood smoke fumes. If you are considering a geothermal heated concrete floor for your home, you would want to stay here in the winter to test this out. Ask to see our electric bills.
Birmingham is about an hour south and Huntsville about an hour north. Three covered bridges are within a few miles of us, otherwise there's NOTHING to do here but get in some major 'me' time or re-connect with that special someone in your life. There are NO TV's in the guest rooms, however, there is a 60" plazma tv upstairs in River Hall. Electric clocks with alarms are available upon request, and there are no newspapers in the house, so bring your bird, bug, tree books, binoculars, deet and cameras (we get some incredible photo ops from the elevated vantage point of our home). Perhaps you would like to fish in the farm pond or just feed the fish and turtles. We have a small telescope & are Dark-Sky compliant.
Wanda specializes in an all-you-can-eat breakfast casserole. This is usually served with a fruit smoothie and a fruit w/homemade yogurt and local honey compote. Sometimes we make homemade bread and serve it with our very own prize winning blackberry jelly. If you're up to it, you can eat breakfast on the front porch. You are welcome to the full use of the large kitchen, which includes an induction cooktop and separate oven, so you can pack a lunch for your day excursions, eat dinner out, or stop at the local grocery to pick up something to cook in the microwave or on the BBQ grill. See our guidebook for dining recommendations. After your dinner, you can pull a chair up to a campfire in the evening and toast marshmallows and watch the stars. Yes, the constellations are still there and you can also see the Milky Way from anywhere on the property.
Our guests have access to the porches, kitchen, living/dining room area and 1/2 bath on the first floor. Also, there is a big TV, books, games and puzzles in the commons area of the second floor.
Interaction with Guests
Bill and Wanda love to meet and hang out with you and find out your interests and hobbies and we really love to talk about this work-in-progress that we call home, but you can have all the privacy you desire in this secure compound.
We request that no shoes be worn indoors, and for the comfort of all of our guests: no fragrances and no smoking. Be aware that foot thick concrete walls limit cell phone and radio reception, so be prepared to go outside for signals. If you need something, please ask for it...we never quite mastered mind reading. If an interior room door is closed, don't open it. Otherwise, you are free to wander around this unusual house and open cabinets, make more coffee, use the refrigerator, cooktop, oven, microwave, BBQ grill, grab the remote control and put your feet up. Antiques live here but the furniture isn't. Enjoy !!
What wonderful people and a beautiful place! Wanda and Bill were such gracious host! I will definitely stay there again. The home sits on top of a hill on 60+ acres. The private upstairs suite has 3 bedrooms with it's bathroom, a common area with board games, tv, internet, beautiful views and a private entrance to the suite. I woke up to a wonderful breakfast prepared by Wanda and Bill. After breakfast Bill happily gave me a tour of the property, blueberry farm and all. He even taught this city girl how to drive a tractor! I never expected to have had such a great experience, beyond expectations. It was more than just a place to stay, it felt like home.
We would - without any doubt whatsoever - recommend Wanda and Bill as first class hosts. Staying with them has been the high spot of our 6 week holiday. They have been warm, welcoming, kind and generous. They made every effort to ensure we enjoyed our stay and nothing was too much trouble to them. The accommodation they offer is unique both in its location and it's luxury. Set high on a hill and surrounded by wonderful views, this is truly a retreat from the everyday world. There is plenty to do in Blount County, from exploring the covered bridges, beautiful Pallisades Park and the delightful and fascinating local museum - to learning to ride Bill's tractors, hiking through the countryside, hunting, fishing to sitting on the porch drinking in the view and admiring the stars.
Wanda's food is plentiful and delicious and tailored to individual tastes. There are also reasonably priced restaurants with excellent food nearby.
The unique layout of Wanda and Bills house would make it ideal for family get-togethers, reunions or group holidays. Wanda and Bill live downstairs and upstairs there are 3 double bedrooms to rent, all with private bathrooms. These lead off a large communal area, ideal for (email hidden)e extensive private land gives an opportunity for freedom not often available.
We would happily stay with Wanda and Bill again and are confident that they fully deserve the full 5 stars we have given them.
Thanks so much Wanda and Bill!

I used to swim with sharks and climb volcanoes. Seriously. Now, we're completing a concrete block home and volunteer our time with the local Master Gardener group. I'm shy, but he's my social butterfly. I like bugs, reptiles, trees, could sit and watch snow melt and cars rust; he's got a list of projects and keeps busy all the time. Come visit us for some true southern hospitality !!
