The space
Recent updates: We have a remodeled bathroom with a deeper than average tub and have added an outlet on the exterior of the home to be used for EV charging.
This cabin is perfect for a couple, 2 couples, (3 couples if one sleeps on futon in living room), a friends weekend, or a family. We have 2 bedrooms (1 with Q and 1 with K), plus a nice Q futon in the living room. The space is open, yet cozy, charming with a rustic feel, but has a few modern amenities and newer mattresses. We have two ROKU TVs, one in living room and one in a bedroom.
The back lawn is peaceful and you can hear the Sandy River! Watch from the large picture windows as the rain or snow falls while you sit by the wood stove, or use the ROKU to enjoy some movies or tv.
We are set back away from the road, but you can hear traffic from Barlow Trail Rd if you are in the front yard or have the front door open...but if you are in the backyard, or only have the river-facing windows open, you mostly only hear the river! You can see two somewhat distant neighbors through the trees in the winter, but in the spring and summer, you don't see neighbors due to foliage.
Important for Winter:
HEAT: The home will be around 60 degrees when you arrive. You'll need to turn up heaters, and in winter months, you will almost always need to start a fire in wood stove. Please do NOT book the cabin between October to April 15th if you do not want to use the wood stove, unless you are comfortable in 60-65 degree temperatures in the main living area. If you plan to use our wood, you may need to chop larger pieces with our splitting mull. The electric heat sources can heat the home to around 60-65 in living room area, and 70 in bedrooms. Many guests have found the living room area to be chilly without using the wood stove, especially in winter weather. The wood stove can heat the entire cabin on it's own if you keep it going. It’s very efficient & sometimes too hot! We provide wood for guests from October-April 30th for guests who plan to use the wood stove as their SOLE source of heat, but please bring your own newspaper and kindling. In the cabin, there are detailed instructions for how to use the wood stove effectively.
COFFEE: bring your own, and use our electric percolator or coffee maker. Bring ground, or use our grinder :)
Sometimes we can offer late check-out or early check- in, just ask :)
Guest access
Feel free to use condiments from refrigerator, spices, wifi, ROKU on tv. We provide wood to guests that plan to only use the wood stove for their source of heat between Oct-May 1st. Please bring your own kindling, matches, and newspaper to start your fire. You can get all of these items a mile down the road at the Brightwood Store.
Other things to note
When you arrive, the cabin will likely be around 60 degrees, and you need to either turn up the two space heaters and the bedroom wall heaters, or start a fire in the wood stove. Some people have found the cabin to not reach above 65 in the main living area without using the wood stove, and others have been very comfortable without using the woodstove. Wood is available for guests staying Oct-April, who want to use the wood stove. The stove is very warm and can heat the entire home after 1-2 hours.
Our belongings are stored in one closet, the rest is yours! We have distant neighbors, but during spring/ summer, you cannot see them due to the trees. We are set back away from the road, but you can hear traffic from Barlow Trail Rd if you are in the front yard...but if you are in the house or in the backyard, you mostly hear the river!
