Close to three of the best beaches in Costa Rica: 2 minutes to Playa Carrillo, great for swimming, calm, many palm trees, no development; Playa Camaronal, best surfing in the world, nature reserve and turtle protection area, and Samara, with shopping
Join us for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Great food. Happy Hour daily! We highly suggest poolside cocktails.
Note: Please contact us with any questions you may have and to confirm availability prior to making your reservation. The calendar is hard to manage and sometimes shows full when we have space for you.
Be advised that the location on the map is NOT correct, there is no construction at all on Playa Carrillo, no hotels, bars or anything else, and there is no longer an airport there. We are located 2.5 km from the beach on a main paved road, a 2 minute drive. I cannot get airbnb to change this map.
Located at the edge of the jungle, with howler monkeys you can hear every AM and at dusk, and iguanas and other critters around, El Sueno Tropical / Tropical Dreams is an intimate 16 room resort set in 3 acres of tropical gardens. There are 4 buildings that house 4 units per building. There are 8 standard rooms with two twins, or a king or queen bed, 4 deluxe rooms with 2 queens beds or a queen and 2 twin beds, and 4 two bedrooms apartments, with a queen or king in each bedroom, some have 2 twins in the second bedroom, and all have a twin in the living room, sleep up to 5. We have a portacrib available for tiny ones. We are secluded but walking distance to the village of Estrada, old-time Costa Rica at its best, all our staff walk to work from there. We are on a bus route to Carrillo and Samara, and from there to all of the country. All rooms and apartments are beautifully decorated, and have cold A/C, ceiling fans, 24" TV with cable, mini refrigerator (full size refrigerator and cooking facilities in the apartments), and coffee makers, with a hammock hanging in each front porch, and also high speed WiFi throughout the property. Online working or social media catchup by the pool is the way to live. There is a free-form Italian tiled pool and a separate smaller pool for kiddies or adults to chill. We are located close to 3 world-class beaches-beautiful Playa Carrillo, which is a sheltered bay with small waves, great for kids, stand up paddling, and offshore world-class fishing, great place for a sunset swim as well; Samara is well-known for shopping, bars and restaurants, a small touristy beach; Camaronal is a well-kept secret, undeveloped, incredible right break for world class surfing, and it is a turtle refuge with arrivadas or desovadas, the laying of eggs, then the births about 20 days later. El Sueno Tropical is a short distance to many area activities, zip line/canopy tour/rappeling, ocean and river kayaking, surfing and standup paddle boarding, dolphin watching and snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, hiking, bike, scooter, motorcycle and ATV rentals, 4 x 4 adventure tours, gyrocopter tours, cooking, dancing and Spanish language classes, inshore and offshore fishing with professional captains or the fisherman who does it every day for a living, or you may want to stay in and relax by the pool with drinks served poolside. Hotel El Sueno Tropical offers many wonderful amenities including 2 swimming pools, restaurant and full bar. Great food, tapas, grilled fish and meats, and a brick lined pizza oven with over 30 types to choose from, all creatively prepared from fresh local ingredients--exotic fruits and vegetables, catch of the day seafood, grass fed beef, pork, and poultry. Good stuff!
Lots of wildlife to see on the property and be sure to hand feed our pet deer, we have three on site, Rosie, Bruiser and Spike.
Also nearby is La Selva Bromelia Gardens and Animal Rescue Center to see a lot of the local wildlife. 4:00 is a good bet--feeding time!
Enjoy laid-back luxury at El Sueno Tropical!

Interaction with Guests
we love to meet people from all over the world and share experiences
we are in a quiet area but not secluded, close to everything, with howler monkeys, iguanas and other critters around
Smoking is not permitted in rooms or restaurant by law. In an effort to conserve water and energy, linens and towels will normally be changed every three days of your stay. Just let us know if you need something sooner. Please supervise kids while in the pool and on the grounds. Mom and Dad: we highly suggest cocktails poolside.
Jose seems like a nice guy and the property is in a good location with beautiful surroundings. Pool area is pleasant enough and the food in the restaurant was good. However, we had to cut our stay short after 2 nights (which to be fair Jose understood) as we found the apartment was unsuitable for a comfortable stay with our 2 daughters (5 months and 4 years old) for 10 nights. The apartment needed a good clean and dust and after requesting this and it apparently being carried out, it still looked like it hadn't been touched for a while - they did clean our pots and pans but we were yet to see our cutlery before we left. The lighting in the living area is dull with only a small single bed and a couple of chairs at the kitchen bench to sit on. Moreover, there was no security safe as advertised and A/C only in the living room with noisy fans in the bedrooms. In addition, although this apartment is on the edge of the tropical jungle and some insects are of course unavoidable (I've stayed in many varying standards of jungle lodgings in the past but they were all commensurate with their price), for the $120/night price tag I was not expecting hundreds of ants of all shapes, sizes and colours, along with various other tropical insect species to infiltrate our living space rendering it pretty much useless for young children to play on the floor and to make and eat meals on the breakfast bar. The rooms may be better - I never saw one. But, if you need to spend any time in an apartment with your family (for example when the kids are asleep in the evenings) there are better options for that kind of money. Overall, I believe an upgrade is required to the property to match the price.
Reviews like this leave me shaking my head and chuckling, no one can have all good reviews. I rent this apartment constantly, yearround, had folks in there just before and just after Neil came and went, so we clean it every day, wash all dishes and cutlery (although neil`s request to rewash everything was a first, but we did it, not to his satisfaction, however) and nary a bug or ant is seen, and i never saw one while they were here, they only say they saw them at night obviously, so where they came and went from, who knows, but 100`s of ants, sounds like an army ant invasion, which i have never seen here, but this would never have different sizes and shapes and colours. funny, though, that the $120 price was a key, mentioned more than once, as if a lower price would have made 100`s of ants acceptable, even if u have a baby and a small child. In fact, neil said they had so many ants their little girl was afraid to walk on the floor and they had to carry her to the bathroom. if that happened to me, i would not stay a second night like they did. in any case, neil felt strongly enough that he also wrote a similar review on trip advisor, so i apologize for any inconvenience, and i will be extra careful. if i did not know better, i would say he was sent by a competitor, because in the other review he resented that there were so many good reviews. in either case, neil, happy trails, and hope you have a bug-free trip. btw, thanks for the few nice comments at the outset of the review.
Great location and adorable kittens on the patio! We had an excellent time here.
Beautiful place, nice people, good food - and our little daughter especially enjoyed playing with the newborn kittens!
El Sueno Tropical was a great place to stay on our vacation to Costa Rica.
The location is great, close to beaches and restaurants and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend staying here.
We booked Sueno Tropical at Playa Carillo just the day before we arrived. What a wonderful place - we feel as if we discovered a secret oasis. Jose and his team were so welcoming - after only 2 days there, we felt like we were part of the 'family'. The rooms are clean and spacious, the property is well maintained and inviting. Sitting by the pool one afternoon, we were treated to a cacophony of jungle sounds - truly magical. Jose was extremely helpful about the area and informative about Costa Rica. Our son was sick and he offered to drive us to the nearest town to go to the pharmacy. And the food! We had the best meal of our whole Costa Rica journey right there at El Sueno Tropical - chef Jonathan prepared a meal that was unbelievable - fresh fish prepared with a wonderful sauce, sautéed vegetables…At breakfast we were treated to homemade banana bread, freshly made jams and wonderful fresh bread. We were really sad to leave this little slice of paradise and we highly recommend a stay here. A wonderful atmosphere, great host, lovely environment.
We reserved Jose's place for our family while in Costa Rica. We found out that our kids don't travel well on the back roads on the nicoya peninsula.
We tried to make it up to Samara, but for our family it just didn't work out.
Jose was very kind and refunded our money. He was extremely accommodating.
Thanks so much!

nice place, very nice people but too far from the beatch (10 minutes drive)
hola benoit, it's 2 km from our door to the beach, at 60 kmh (40 mph) it's 2 minutes, at 30 kmh (20 mph) it's 4 minutes, so to take u 10 minutes, u were driving @ 12 kmh (8 mph), doing some sightseeing, or maybe some cattle on the road? maybe u meant to samara? that's 5 more kilometers. anyway, thanks for the nice compliments, enjoyed your brief stay,

I was born in Cuba, raised in Florida, moved to Costa Rica in 1997, love to read, travel, grow stuff to cook it and eat it, surf the Net, opened Vida Tropical in 1999, have great people helping: Isabel, my manager for 6 years, is from Colombia, married to Norman, New Yorker from Colombian parents, he owns Jalapeño Central Tex Mex Restaurant in Alajuela. Their son is Nico, born in Costa Rica. Sylvia, from Costa Rica, has been our housekeeper and cook for 10 years. Adilio (Pilo) is also Costa Rican and is there covering late arrivals (after 8) and early departures (from 3 to 7 AM), I'm there only part of the time, the rest I spend now in my new place in Playa Carrillo. We all enjoy meeting the great variety of guests from all over the world. We have one of the world's best breakfasts at both places, with 4 or 5 types of fresh fruit, orange juice, high altitude coffee and assorted teas, white and brown sugar and milk, corn flakes and granola, several kinds of bread for toast, several kinds of homemade jams and jellies, eggs any style, poached, sunny side up, over easy, scrambled, omelettes, frittatas, your choice of plain or with smoked cheese, garlic, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, smoked ham or country sausage, French toast and pancakes with or without fruit or chocolate chips, honey, syrup and Nutella. Include also if you wish a serving of our own version of Gallo Pinto, a mix of rice and beans seasoned with diced veggies and our secret mix of spices, Balsamic vinegar and Lizano sauce, the Costa Rican version of Worcestershire sauce, mighty tasty stuff.
