Sonora---Yosemite to Lake Tahoe

House - Private room · Gibbs Dr, Sonora, CA 95370, United States

You are going to love it here!

You will love our quiet location. Nothing beats a good night's sleep. There are no lights to mar the beauty of all the stars at night. And you will enjoy waking up to the beautiful sounds of the birds.

The Space

Going to Yosemite? Stay in Sonora and enjoy all that it offers! We have the greatest rates for one of the closest homes nearest Yosemite.

We are a non-smoking, mostly allergen-free house situated in the Sierra Nevada foothills between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe.

You will have your own bedroom, bathroom and lounge area in the lower portion of our home. The suite is separate from our living quarters and therefore very private. It has WiFi and television.

The double bed is very comfortable with all linens and covers provided. Ceiling fans cool you in the summer and heaters provide warmth in the winter. The bedroom has an air conditioner for use during our hottest California summer nights.

Our home is in a quiet neighborhood in Sonora, CA at the 2200 foot (670 meters) elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Though we are about 75 minutes from the north gate of Yosemite. It is the most beautiful country you may ever see from the rolling oak studded hills of California's Gold Rush region to the majestic conifer forests leading to the park.

Make us your base for discovering this wonderful country. The town of Sonora is nestled in the hills that gave up its gold to the miners 160 years ago. It has a thriving downtown area with lovely shops, restaurants, antique stores and recently was home to the fourth stage of the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race with riders from around the world. Nearby are dozens of wineries, cave exploration, zip lines, alpine lakes, live theater, horseback riding, year round golf and so much more.

Once you get off the major highways and onto the less travelled roads you will experience life and people unlike the big cities.

If you want to avoid the crowds of Yosemite--Calaveras Big Trees has the biggest trees in the world and is only 45 minutes from our home.

We are centrally located between Jamestown (Railtown State Park), Columbia (Gold Rush State Park) and downtown Sonora, so you are within 2 miles (3 kilometers) of any of these quaint towns. Several television shows and movies were made in our local area, such as Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, Petticoat Junction, Wild, Wild West, Unforgiven, Back to the Future III and many more.

It has been said to us by past guests that this area is not in the travel books so they did not know about it until they got here. Time and time again we have been told how they wish they'd booked more time to spend in this wonderful region.

Because we have traveled so much we can give you ideas of what to see and what to not waste your time on. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have and please do not feel obligated to stay with us, we just want your trip to be the best it can be.

We have been to every state in the nation, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Eastern and Western Canada, Mexico and 12 European countries. As a result we know what travelers need. We welcome and look forward to visiting with you. We have three friendly dogs but they are not allowed into the suite; however, if you want to be with them you are welcome to join us upstairs. Please come and meet some new friends....US!

Guest Access

We don't offer up the kitchen as an amenity because of our dogs being in our home and the scheduling it imposes. Guests may ask and we can work with them if it's a necessity.

Interaction with Guests

We enjoy interacting with our guests. We welcome our guests to come upstairs (at their discretion or desire) to have a chat or perhaps to eat their breakfast on the deck.

The Neighborhood

We are just two miles from downtown Sonora and we love that we are so close. Enjoy the tree-lined drive all the way into town. The people are friendly and you will often see people waving or shouting out to others as they recognize friends. You should see downtown Sonora when they have their parades! (May 10th: Mother Lode Roundup Parade draws over 20,000 visitors and spectators! It's a sight to behold.)

Getting around

We have a bus system that runs all around our county but it's not something guests have need of since they are driving in this area. There is bus service to Yosemite in the summer months that some might be interested in.

Other Things to Note

You will never tire of the sunset from our deck. Watching the hummingbirds and yellow finches is also a treat.
Beauty is all around you in and near Sonora, not just in Yosemite.

  • Mitch & Susan are incredible hosts! The room was set up like a bed and breakfast, with a very cute sitting / dining area. Susan provided fresh baked cookies on arrival and fresh coffee every morning (and more cookies :) My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay immensely. Everything was clean and comfortable, plenty of food was provided for us in our dining room fridge. Probably the best part of our stay was hanging out upstairs in the house, chatting with our hosts, and playing with their cute dogs. Such good memories. These people have travelled extensively and can offer fantastic advice and (website hidden) about pretty much any part of the United States. We hope to come past this way again as we would stay here again!

  • Mitch and Susan are most definitely the best Airbnb hosts one could imagine! Our stay was better than in any hotel, a very warm welcome, good restaurant tips, very delicious breakfast (including self made zuchini walnut bread!!!), and we were able use their beautiful deck for a yoga session. Thanks again, we will recommend you to all our friends travelling the region!

  • We had a wonderful stay with Mitch and Susan, and received some good guidance for local eatery and wine tasting venues. Well appointed guest quarters, with ample room to relax. Will definitely look into staying here again, when we come to visit Sierra Foothills (and wineries) next time.

  • Mitch and Susan's home was my very first Airbnb experience and I think it will be very hard to beat! Upon arrival we were greeted with delicious home made muffins that were probably the best I've ever had. Their home was immaculately clean! No dust and the sheets smelled wonderful. The breakfast they provided was cute, simple, and very healthy. I really appreciate them going the extra mile to provide their guests food! Mitch and Susan were excellent hosts and so much fun to be around. I miss their home already!

  • Mitch and Susan were great hosts, very friendly and (email hidden)ey even invited us into there home for
a beer and glass of wine.
We liked the privacy of having our own space, bedroom, bath,
washer and dryer, a nice kitchenette area and our own private entrance. They had a lot of literature about the area which was helpful.

  • This was my first experience with AirBnB and what a great stay! Before leaving home, we were a little nervous about what we'd find as I'd always been a consultant with a top IT company and stayed in big brand hotels - but, this was such a great place with a gracious host, we're going to search out B&Bs for all our trips.

We got in after 9P on Friday night and chatted with Mitch a little (I was dog tired). The section of their home made available to guests is extremely clean, with all the conveniences that one might need.

Caught up with Mitch the next evening and he invited us to their patio upstairs to have a beer - they have great dogs as well. If you stay here and have time, make sure to talk to Mitch about what he did before he retired ! re ever by where we are - would love to catch up.

MITCH: I am retired again and am enjoying it more than the first time. I love being with my wife and having six Saturdays a week. I love travel and connecting with other people. Whether on the road or at home I enjoy the window to humanity it offers. No forest, building, beach, exhibit, etc can equal the joy of another human being. SUSAN: I am the quiet one of the two because Mitch is so much larger than life. I can't keep up with that. Yet we are a great fit together and that's how you will usually find us....together. I love to golf and travel with my husband. I love photography, people and life. I view our guests (and/or hosts) as family we haven't met yet, but who have come to stay. From then on we will always have a piece of our histories intertwined. We are loving the preparation in anticipation of guests and if you are one of them, we can't wait til you get here!
