Capt. Apollo was very helpful. He drove us to our White House tour the first day since we were unfamiliar with the area. He provided us with a parking pass for our car and replied quickly to all texts. The house was just 3 blocks from a nice variety of restaurants. We ended up walking to all of our site seeing which was 1-2 miles (Capitol, Smithsonian museums, Library of Congress, etc). Capt. Apollo did a nice job of explaining things we needed to know to make our vacation great!
Spent 4 nights at Casa di Giovanni. Location is excellent - leafy street 2 blocks away from 8th Street SE. Although the Captain was not there we were met by the nest best person - Joyce who is a great greeter! She is the BEST!. The home is beautiful, lots of space, comfy beds, plenty of hot water - a home away from home. Neighborhood is a great place to come back to after a hard day being a tourist! Restaurants on 8th are of varied foods and offer good priced meals with first class service. Oh, and by the way, having the Marine Barracks down the street sure adds to the security!! Will certainly be back
We are a family of four (with two older teens), and just returned from a wonderful week stay at Casa di Giovanni. The location is terrific - close to subway, restaurants, market, etc. The accommodations were very pleasant and comfortable. The beds were especially comfy! Captain Apollo was easy to communicate with and ensured that we had all that we needed to make our stay great. Thank you, Captain Apollo!
We chose this property because of the great reviews of both the house and Capt Apollo. We were in DC to take my mother who was visiting from Australia to see the sights as well as look at some colleges for my daughter. This was a trip of a lifetime for her and it was important to me that we find a comfortable place for us to stay. I went back through the reviews and am surprised that only a few people took issue with the cleanliness of the place. I noticed a few poor reviews but they didn't deter me as most of the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Our experience was very different. The pictures shown here are quite a few years old, evidenced by the growth of the plant shown in one of the pictures which is now "Seymour"-sized. The plant was not the issue. The cleanliness of the apartment was. I don't think the apartment has been cleaned thoroughly since these pictures were taken. The kitchen surfaces are relatively clean and the bathrooms had been wiped over. But dust bunnies are everywhere, there is grime on every windowsill and trash on the floor close to the base of furniture, including q-tips, one rubber flip flop encrusted with dust, bits of paper, receipts, etc. Dead plants or empty soil-filled pots are in many rooms and we were also treated to a vase of dead flowers in the kitchen. There are stacks of papers and miscellaneous junk everywhere. Drawers have been used as trash receptacles with discarded junk inside them. The once white towels are now grey and stained. There were no kitchen towels and the food items in the cupboard are ancient. There is a row of cereal boxes on the kitchen counter that are expired. The internet was glitchy. The air conditioner did not work for the first night which was pretty awful given the humidity and that none of the windows open (I can't imagine that is compliant with the fire code/regulations) but thankfully Capt Apollo made arrangements for it to be fixed and it was in good working order for the remainder of our stay. I contacted the host about the problems we encountered. When my concerns that the house was dirty and the towels were stained he responded that "the house is reasonably thoroughly cleaned after each tenants stay and that he cannot provide brand new towels for every visitor". There was no continental breakfast daily despite our reply to Capt Apollo a week in advance regarding our preferences. He did not respond to this complaint. On the plus side there was plenty of bottled water which we really appreciated. And the master bed was very comfortable. The location was great, close to 8th St restaurants and Eastern Market Station. We never met Capt Apollo as it seems he is in Thailand for a month. A neighbor gave us the keys and she did her best given the situation. If you stay here I...
We very much enjoyed our stay. (Family of four, including a 7 yr old and a teen.) The place was very comfortable. Good water pressure with plenty of hot water, good AC, usable kitchen, comfortable & elegant furnishings, good attention to detail in a recent remodel. The place was clean when we arrived. Apollo was a very considerate host. He took time to show us the neighborhood and take us shopping for food on our first evening. Joyce was also very sweet and helpful in his absence. We would not hesitate to stay here again.
Neighborhood: Well placed for to be a tourist in the area. Really easy access to buses, the metro, and cabs. Good local restaurants, bakery across the street from the metro station was particularly good. If you have kids, there is a very nice game shop near the metro also. Felt very safe with lots of folks walking around in the neighborhood.
1. Minor item: There is a street light just outside the master bedroom windows. If you like a dark bedroom, this may be annoying. With the blinds drawn, there is almost enough light to read by. This could easily be fixed by replacing the inexpensive vinyl blinds with opaque top down shades. (We taped foil over the windows as a temp fix.)
2. Fire safety for third bedroom. This bedroom is at the end of a long hall with no easy secondary escape route. The bedroom window and a second door lead to an added room that is used for storage. The door is locked. While the window is unlocked, it is partially blocked by a fixed shelf on the other side. At a minimum, the shelf should be removed from blocking the window. As is, I would be comfortable sleeping in that bedroom, but I would not put one of my kids there.
All bedrooms and the downstairs had working smoke detectors. (Always check smoke alarms when staying in an informal place such as an Airbnb. I have twice found detectors with long absent batteries in such places. In both cases, the owner did not know.) A smoke alarm in the upstairs hall would be a good addition.
Overall: A great place to stay. When we next return, we will look for the availability of this place first.
My family and I enjoyed our stay here for 5 nights. Capt Apollo met us at Casa di Giovanni and showed us the place and even though it was pouring rain he was going to ride his bike to get us some breakfast food but I told him to bring it the next day which he did first thing in the morning. He also got us a parking permit for our car which was a great deal. It was nice to have the 3 bathrooms and the place was nice and roomy. The 2 back bedrooms were quiet while our room in front had some street noise but it was not an issue for us. The neighborhood was good, close to the Metro and 2 blocks from lots of store, restaurants and bars. Good location. We would stay here again.
Capt. Apollo responded very promptly to every email or call. We called from the train station and he was already at the house making sure we had everything we needed upon arrival. He even provided a sense of what the cab fare should be with a tip. Casa di Giovanni was a unique spot with many amenities. Since we were staying in a private home, we were surrounded the family's memorabilia which made it fell like being with family, rather than at a stark hotel.
We where in a terrific spot--very close to the Metro, restaurants, stores--all were an easy walk! The area was very safe and attractive! We never worried about coming in late and since we were so close to transportation, felt comfortable walking in the area well after dark. I would definitely return to this location on future trips. Two thumbs up for Casa di Giovanni!!!!!!
Lovely house - beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable in a first rate location. Easy access to the subway, though you can also easily walk into the centre too. Captain is EXTREMELY helpful and goes out of his way to provide those 'extra touches' (eg fresh flowers) which makes a great place EXTRA special.
My parents and I had a great stay at the Casa di Giovanni - imagine spending a week with your Italian grandmother (or at least her decor). The location is great, 5 minutes walk to the E. Market metro station, and all the restaurant and entertainment options on 8th street are even closer. Capt. Apollo was a really great host. One of the best communicators I've experienced in the vacation rental world. He provided us with everything we needed for a week's worth of breakfast. He was very flexible on allowing my parents to arrive early and depart late, giving us a lot of flexibility in planning my schedule. Especial thanks to his efforts helping me out when I realized I'd booked my flight for the wrong day. I was able to stay an extra night, and he even took me to the airpot.
