Viva Esperanza - 2BR - walk to Beach/Malecon

The Space

Viva Esperanza is a newly renovated 900 sq ft 2 BR apartment in the quaint fishing village of Esperanza, on the south side of Vieques. We are walking distance to the Malecon (waterfront promenade - 5 blocks away), beaches (Playa Esperanza & Sun Bay - easy walks - Media Luna & Navio - longer hikes), restaurants, bars, shops, groceries, bakeries, snorkeling, kayaking and bio luminescent bay tours (the brightest bio bay in the world - must see). We are also only a 10 minute drive to the main gate of the largest nature reserve in all of the Caribbean - the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Within the refuge you will find some of the most gorgeous untouched Caribbean beaches you have ever seen, such as - Playa Caracas (Red Beach), Playuela (Garcia Beach), Pata Prieta (Secret Beach), Bahia de la Chiva (Blue Beach), La Plata (Silver Beach) and Escondida. There is no development within the reserve area, so all of the beaches are in their beautiful natural state and all you will see for miles is white sand, turquoise sea, rolling green hills, and palm trees. This is the Caribbean the way it used to be, before large scale tourism. There are never any crowds, and you may even have the beach completely to yourself for a few hours as your own private tropical oasis.

The entire apartment has been completely renovated and everything inside is new - including all furnishings and mattresses (one queen, one full), ceramic tiles, full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, huge bathroom with walk-in glass block shower, new ceiling fans throughout and air conditioners (in bedrooms). It has been re-designed with a bright, open, airy floor plan, where the living, dining, and cooking areas flow together seamlessly creating an open social space. The interior is decorated in a clean modern style with a focus on guest comfort. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots/pans, utensils, dishes, cups, wine glasses, mugs, a coffee maker, and toaster. All towels and 300 thread count cotton bed linens are provided. We also offer beach chairs, an umbrella and a cooler for all of your seaside adventures. We do not have TV, but we do have wireless internet, so you can surf the net and stream your favorite movies from your laptop.

Your hosts, Lauren and Edison, have lived full time on Vieques for 4 years and know the island very well. Both of us have also worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years and are here to help you have an awesome island experience. We live upstairs and are on site to answer all of your questions, and help you plan the best vacation possible, with all of the inside info that only a local host can provide. We have a passion for helping our guests fully explore our island, and sharing all of the special places that make Vieques so beautiful and unique. We highly recommend a car rental while you are here, so that you can venture out to the most remote undeveloped beaches in the Wildlife Reserve. However, if you do not have a car, you can walk, hike or bike to many places from the house. We can also arrange for a local publico or taxi to pick-up and drop-off at places that are further away from town.

Esperanza is the only area on the island that is easily accessible by foot or bike to so many attractions and amenities. It is a small Caribbean fishing town with a very unique Vieques flair. All of our neighbors are Viequense, and most of their families have lived here for generations. This is by no means an isolated resort area or a gated housing development. Esperanza is the place for people who want to have an authentic Vieques experience, immerse themselves in the culture, meet neighbors, be a part of the community, learn about local history, practice their Spanish, and see the island through the eyes of the people who live and work here everyday.

As with every small town in Puerto Rico, there are many unique local sights, sounds and flavors - like the smell of slow cooked Sancocho on a Sunday afternoon, the sound of salsa or bachata playing on a tropical breeze, neighbors on horses trotting through the street, children playing with their dogs, or the crow of a rooster welcoming a new day (there are roosters everywhere in Vieques, we even had one ride the ferry with us once, Lol). This is all a part of day to day life in Esperanza, and it will be a part of your experience as well when you stay with us. Although the neighborhood is more active during the day, our neighbors usually go to bed early, so it is generally very quiet at night.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to make recommendations and help you make arrangements for car or bike rentals, tours and outdoor adventures, restaurant reservations, etc, or just point you in the direction of our favorite reef or untouched beach. We have close relationships with local tour providers, restaurants, rental companies. and taxi services and can help you out with any of your vacation planning needs. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and sharing the incredible natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends, and family!

  • We had a lovely time staying in Esperanza! The apartment is perfect, has everything you need for your island getaway. Lauren even provides beach chairs and a cooler! Lauren was there to greet us on our first night, despite our ferry being an hour late. She had rum punch waiting and a map pinpointing all her favorite beaches. She was very helpful and sweet! The malecon (restaurants, bars, beautiful sunset views) was only a 10 minute walk away. Lots of animal sounds, coqui frogs put us to sleep at night and roosters woke us up in the morning. Bring earplugs if you are a sensitive sleeper. We didn't mind all the sounds, though! Overall, one of my best vacations ever! Loved it here.

  • We had an unforgettable stay here, and much of that was made possible by the warm and generous hosts, Lauren and Edison! We took the last passenger ferry to Vieques, arrived around 10:30pm, and Lauren was there to greet us with a smile, rum punch, and thoughtful tips on our stay on Vieques. Over the course of our stay, Lauren and Edison were incredibly helpful and gave great advice on which beaches to visit, what restaurants were good, which tour companies to use, and much more. The apartment is exactly as described -- very clean and charming. Warm showers after a long day at the beach; room air conditioners for comfortable sleeping at night! Walking distance to a small grocery store, which was very convenient. Also, we enjoyed the walk to "downtown" Esperanza and the waterfront promenade. Additionally, the "untouched" beaches of the Vieques Wildlife Preserve are breathtaking -- this is paradise at its finest! We didn't reserve a jeep in time, so Lauren suggested we rent scooters to get to Blue Beach, and I'm so glad we did -- it was so worth it! Before we left Vieques, we were already planning our next trip there, and that entailed staying with Lauren and Edison. They are the ideal hosts, and you can't beat the location or the accommodations!

  • We had a perfect stay at Lauren and Edison's apartment in Vieques! We really couldn't have asked for anything more. Lauren was great and gave us tons of advice, the apartment was super clean, the A/C drowned out the noise of the chickens that are all around the island, the bed was very comfortable, and we loved having such a nice kitchen to prepare lunches in. Also the beach towels were big and the whole umbrella/cooler/chair situation really helped. Highly recommended!

  • Lauren and Edison's apartment was exactly as described. It was perfect for our stay and we were very comfortable there with 4 adults. We didn't spend to much time in the apartment as the beautiful beaches kept us out all day and the wonderful restaurants nearby kept us out at night. The walk to town is only about 10 minutes and is very convenient. The beds were comfortable and the roosters didn't bother us a bit with the fan going. The street is safe - full of local people and flavor. Be prepared though, because it is an island neighborhood and there is a lot of poverty. There are also very yappy dogs down the block that are harmless but noisy but can feel intimidating. I would highly recommend the place if you want to be a part of the real Esperanza. The hosts and the apartment itself are wonderful. Thanks Lauren and Edison.

  • Great accommodations! I would recommend this place for anyone traveling to visit Vieques. Lauren was very helpful to us. She guided us in and greeted us as we pulled up. Definitely would suggest renting a Jeep to get around. Don't miss the opportunity to see the beaches in the Nature Preserve as they are excellent and not very crowded most days. The dining options are a little pricey in Esperanza, but you can buy groceries and cook at home after the beach. Good for a few days like we did or just a day.

  • As close to a perfect vacation as you can get. Lauren was a wonderful host. She had the place ready for us on arrival, rum punch and all, answered our questions throughout our stay, and even provided beach toys for our son. The apartment itself is perfect for a family or two couples. Very nicely renovated and furnished, it's exactly as depicted in the photos. All of the rooms have ceiling fans, which we found did the trick. We didn't even turn on the AC in the bedrooms. The neighborhood is marvelous and full of local character(s). If you are a light sleeper, you might bring ear plugs because there are a lot of roosters ready to get you up bright and early. It's a short walk down to the malecon in Esperanza, and Trip Advisor has all those reviews for you, though we do want to leave a shout out to a new restaurant not yet on TA called La Guyacan. Check it out for good local Puerto Rican food above and beyond the usual fare on the waterfront. Finally, the fact that Lauren provides all of your beach amenities--umbrella, chairs, etc--is a HUGE help. Overall, our experience could not have been better.

  • What an amazing place and hosts! We were in contact with Lauren right after our booking and she was amazing and very prompt. She helped us arrange a taxi to pick us up from the ferry and gave us some great info about the island. Upon arrival she was waiting for us with tropical drinks and another informative tourist info session that was much needed. The actual place is fresh, clean and beautiful. The towels, sheets and kitchen were better than a hotel. We enjoyed every aspect of the house included the great novel selection, free wifi and games they thoughtfully have out. Icing on the cake was the offer to drive us to the ferry at 5:30am if the taxi service didn't show up.

  • This is a really neat accommodation. Nicely appointed clean apartment, about 10 minute walk from Esperanza restaurants and beautiful sunset viewing spot. If you like experiencing how real folks live, you'll like walking through this neighborhood. Lots of beautiful and uncrowded beaches within 10-25 minutes (website hidden) mostly shut out noise of roosters so they were no bother. Hostess Lauren very nice and thoughtful.

  • Lauren was a terrific host!! (Unfortunately, I never met Edison.) She was very understanding when we had an emergency and had to come a day late. She even had delicious rum punch waiting for us!! Her place is VERY cute, clean, comfortable, and close to town. We did't rent a car and Lauren was so helpful with calling taxis and showing us beaches, restaurants, etc within walking distance. There are amazing beaches that are walking distance from their place. I wish we could have stayed longer and I hope to return to Lauren's apartment and bring friends next time! Vieques was our favorite part of our trip to PR...we explored the west coast and San Juan, and highly recommend Vieques and Lauren and Edison's place!
    * If you are a light sleeper and you like to sleep in, I recommend earplugs. (And this is true in most of the airbnb's that we stayed in.) The roosters are loud in the morning, although it didn't bother us at all, I like the sound and the a/c / fan blocks out most sound.

  • This was my first air bnb experience and my first visit to Vieques and I could not have asked for better hosts! Upon arrive Lauren arranged for a Taxi to pick us up at the airport and when we arrived to Esperanza Lauren was wonderful in explaining the Island to us. Being as myself and the person I was training with ha never been to Vieques this was amazing!

Everything in the apartment was more then I could have asked for. The temperature was perfect, the hammock and couch outside were great for evening to sit outside and the beds were very comfortable.

Lauren and Edison went above and beyond being an amazing host. I would highly recommend staying with them!

Lauren and Edison are originally from Brooklyn, NY and Englewood, NJ (via Bogota, Colombia). We moved to Vieques 4 years ago to renovate her family home in Esperanza and fulfill her mothers dream of making it into a small guest house. In the process, we fell in love with the island and decided to make Vieques our full time home. Both of us have worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years, and actually met while planning guest adventures for National Geographic Expeditions. When we are not working, or fixing up the house, we enjoy exploring this beautiful little island that we call home. We love going to the beach, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, camping, grilling, beach bonfires, and pretty much any outdoor activity that brings us closer to nature and helps us appreciate the wonders of island life. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and sharing the natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends and family!
