About this listing
Viva Esperanza is a newly renovated 2 BR apartment in the quaint fishing village of Esperanza, on the Caribbean (south) side of Vieques. We are an easy walk to the Malecon (waterfront w/restaurants, bars, shops), beautiful beaches, and bio bay tours.
Viva Esperanza is a newly renovated 900 sq ft 2 Bedroom apartment in the quaint fishing village of Esperanza, on the Caribbean (south) side of Vieques. We are an easy 5-10 minute stroll to the Malecon (waterfront w/ restaurants, bars, shops). It is also just a short walk to beautiful local beaches (Esperanza beach 10 min; Sun Bay 20 min; Media Luna 30-45 min & Navio 45 min-1 hr), groceries, bakeries, snorkeling, and bio bay tours (all bio luminescent bay tours meet in Esperanza, only a few blocks away). The ferry dock in Isabel II and the Vieques airport are a quick 10-15 minute drive (we can help arrange a taxi for arrival/departure if you do not have a car rental).
We are also only a 5 minute drive to main entrance of the largest nature reserve in the entire Caribbean - the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Within the refuge you will find some of the most gorgeous untouched Caribbean beaches you have ever seen, such as - Playa Caracas (Red Beach), Playuela (Garcia Beach), Pata Prieta (Secret Beach), Bahia de la Chiva (Blue Beach), La Plata (Silver Beach) and Escondida. There is no development within the reserve area, so all of the beaches are in their beautiful natural state, and all you will see for miles is white sand, turquoise sea, rolling green hills, and palm trees. This is the Caribbean the way it used to be, before large scale tourism. There are never any crowds, and you may even have the beach to yourself for a few hours as your own private tropical oasis.
The entire apartment has been completely renovated and everything inside is new, including - comfortable furnishings and high quality mattresses (one Queen sized bed & one Full sized bed), ceramic tiles, a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a huge bathroom with walk-in glass block shower, new ceiling fans throughout and air conditioners (in bedrooms only). It has been re-designed with a bright, lofty, airy floor plan, where the living, dining, and cooking areas flow together seamlessly, creating an open social space. The interior is decorated in a clean modern style with a focus on guest comfort. The kitchen is thoroughly stocked with everything you need to cook a great meal - a full sized stainless refrigerator & full stove/oven, pots, pans, utensils, dishes, bowls, mugs, cups, wine glasses, a toaster, and a coffee maker (with fresh local coffee included).
All towels (for both bath & the beach) and 300 thread count 100% cotton bed linens are provided. We also offer 4 new Tommy Bahama backpack beach chairs, an extra large beach umbrella, 2 coolers, a raft, and a boogie board for all of your seaside adventures. There is a small library with books, cards and games for guest enjoyment. We do not have TV, but we do have high speed wireless internet, so you can surf the net and stream your favorite shows and movies from your laptop via WIFI, and we have a selection of DVD's that you can watch on your computer.
Esperanza is the only area on the island that is so easily accessible by foot or bike to so many beautiful beaches, attractions and amenities (the beaches on the south side near Esperanza and the Wildlife Reserve are the best on the island, hands down). It is a small Caribbean fishing town with a very unique Vieques flair. All of our neighbors are Viequense, and most of their families have lived here for generations. This is by no means an isolated resort area or a gated development. We are a very small friendly local community. Viva Esperanza is the perfect place for people who want to have an authentic Vieques experience - to walk around town, to restaurants, and to incredible beaches, immerse themselves in the culture, meet neighbors, learn about local history, perhaps practice their Spanish, and see the island through the eyes of the people who live and work here everyday.
As with every small town in Puerto Rico, there are many unique local sights, sounds and flavors - like the smell of slow cooked Sancocho on a Sunday afternoon, the sound of salsa or bachata playing on a tropical breeze, neighbors on Paso Fino horses trotting through town, children laughing and playing with their dogs, or the crow of a rooster welcoming a new day. Just a heads up: there are roosters everywhere in Vieques, in every single neighborhood, no matter where you go or how fancy the house - they even ride the ferry and fly VIP in small planes with us sometimes (no joke), and it is a big part of our culture and island lifestyle. However, if you like to sleep late, the air conditioning will definitely block out any sounds, no problem. This is all a part of day to day life in Vieques, and it will be a part of your experience as well when you stay with us in Esperanza. Although the neighborhood is more active during the day, our neighbors usually go to bed early, so it is very quiet and peaceful at night, with only the sounds of the coqui frogs to lull you to sleep.
Your hosts, Lauren and Edison, have lived full time on Vieques for 5 years and know the island very well. Both of us have also worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years and have a passion for creating an awesome island experience for everyone who stays with us. We live upstairs and are on site to answer all of your questions, and help you plan the best vacation possible, with all of the inside info that only a local host can provide. We love helping our guests explore our favorite parts of the island, and sharing all of the special places that make Vieques so beautiful and unique.
We highly recommend a car rental for a few days while you are here, so that you can venture out to the most remote undeveloped beaches in the Wildlife Reserve. We can provide the names and contact info for local rental companies upon request. If you would like a vehicle, we recommend booking it well in advance, as they are limited on the island and tend to sell out quickly. However, if you do not have a car, you can easily walk, hike or bike to many places from the house. We can also arrange for a local publico or taxi to pick-up and drop-off at places that are further away from town.
Please let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to give recommendations regarding travel logistics and help you make arrangements for car, scooter or bike rentals, tours and outdoor adventures, restaurant reservations, etc, or just point you in the direction of our favorite reef or untouched beach. We are available to help you out with any of your vacation planning needs. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and sharing the incredible natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends, and family!
Interaction with Guests
We had a wonderful time staying here! Lauren send me several very informative emails with tips about Vieques before we arrived - rental cars, bio bays, the best beaches, etc. The neighborhood felt relaxed and comfortable - not full of tourists, just a regular neighborhood. Davin gave us great snorkeling and beach tips once we arrived, and Cara was super nice when we went to Tradewinds for dinner. The apartment itself was exactly as pictured - we have a fabulous time and we all wished we could have stayed longer!
Lauren gave us a lot of information by email before we came, which was appreciated. .Hosts were flexible with check in and, being off the island, had the upstairs tenants let us in. The neighborhood was very lively and bright. Lots of dogs and roosters around. The place was clean, had a nice kitchen, and very comfortable beds! But there was only air conditioning in the bedrooms. One thing was that there wasn't any snorkel gear as mentioned, don't know if the hosts know that it isn't there. The cooler, umbrella, and other gear for us to use was a big plus. It was a little farther walk to the Malecon than 10 minutes, we thought.
Well, What a great place to stay in! Location, Location,Location!!!
Leave your cares at the door. We felt as though we could just check out, and come and go without worries as the lovely hosts live on property. We had everything we needed to live as though we were in our own home away from home. Cara and Devin were so sweet. (You have to go and spend some time with Cara at Trade winds restaurant!)
There are plenty of towels and all you will need for going to the beaches as well.. I almost hate the fact that we are encouraging others to stay here as we want to go back soon and this place is a gem that will stay booked up. LOL This location is great for getting around to all of the cool spots...Ask Cara about booking your Bio-Bay tour With Rebecca. Great value. Rent a Jeep. Pack light if flying on island jumper planes as they allow for 25 lbs per person after that they charge .70 a pound. My girlfriend wore 1/3 of the day and night wear she thought she would need. Bathing suits, shorts and flip flops...Lots of sunscreen! Check out the Hammock in the front and take in the sounds of the community with a Bloody Mary or Mimosa and read the island "Insider": (local magazine) and learn about what to do and where to go..We never had one bad meal on the island! There is a store right down the street that has wine, beer, liquor and all of the groceries you need. We were shocked at how reasonable it was at Moreles groceries for being on an island.....Way cheaper than San Juan, trust me. There are vendors on the Malecon that you should visit.. Happy hours are (email hidden)y out the paella at the Trade winds $25 and enough for two. OMG it was the bomb! The "Tin Box" for their tacos and drinks. STAY HERE, Find your beach, put your feet in the sand and reboot your life, reconnect with your soul at this Amazing place....Benjamin
When we got to the house Cara was there to welcome us and show around. The house was exactly what we imagined as we saw it on the listing. The neighborhood was awesome. Loved hearing the music and roosters throughout the day. It was a real experience of how the locals lived on the island.
Excellent experience! Clean and spacious apartment with open floor plan, nice simple design and everything we needed. Allowed us to have an affordable vacation in beautiful Vieques!
About the Host, Lauren & Edison
Lauren and Edison are originally from Brooklyn, NY. We moved to Vieques 5 years ago to renovate her family home in Esperanza and fulfill her mothers dream of making it into a small guest house. In the process, we fell in love with the island and decided to make Vieques our full time home. Both of us have worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years and have a passion for creating an awesome vacation experience for everyone who stays with us, by sharing all of the inside info that only a local host can provide. When we are not working, or fixing up the house, we enjoy exploring this beautiful place that we call home. We love going to the beach, swimming, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, hiking, camping, cliff jumping, grilling, beach bonfires, and pretty much any outdoor activity that brings us closer to nature and helps us appreciate the wonders of small island life. We look forward to welcoming you to our home and sharing the natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends and family!
