Viva Esperanza - 2BR - walk to Beach/Malecon

The Space

Viva Esperanza is a newly renovated 950 sq ft 2 Bedroom apartment in the quaint fishing village of Esperanza, on the Caribbean (south) side of Vieques Island. We are a very easy 5-10 minute walk to the Malecon (waterfront promenade with great restaurants, bars and shops - 5 blocks away), beaches (Playa Esperanza 10 minutes & Sun Bay 20 minutes - both easy walks - Media Luna 30 minutes & Navio 45 minutes - hiking distance), plus groceries, bakeries, snorkeling, kayaking and bio luminescent bay tours (all bio bay tours meet here in Esperanza). The ferry dock in the town of Isabel II and the Vieques airport are only a quick 10-15 minute drive away (we can help arrange a taxi if you do not have a car rental).

We are also only a 10 minute drive to the main gate of the largest nature preserve in all of the Caribbean - the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Within the refuge you will find some of the most gorgeous untouched Caribbean beaches you have ever seen, such as - Playa Caracas (Red Beach), Playuela (Garcia Beach), Pata Prieta (Secret Beach), Bahia de la Chiva (Blue Beach), La Plata (Silver Beach) and Escondida. There is no development within the reserve area, so all of the beaches are in their beautiful natural state and all you will see for miles is white sand, turquoise sea, rolling green hills, palm trees, and maybe even an endangered sea turtle nest (in season). This is the Caribbean the way it used to be, before large scale tourism. There are never any crowds, and you may even have the beach completely to yourself for a few hours as your own private tropical oasis.

The entire apartment has been completely renovated and everything inside is new - including comfortable furnishings and high quality mattresses (one queen, one full), ceramic tiles, full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, huge bathroom with walk-in glass block shower, new ceiling fans throughout and air conditioners (in both bedrooms). It has been re-designed with a bright, lofty, airy floor plan, where the living, dining, and cooking areas flow together seamlessly, creating an open social space. The interior is decorated in a clean modern style with a focus on guest comfort. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need - pots/pans, utensils, dishes, cups, wine glasses, mugs, a coffee maker, and toaster. All towels (both bath & beach) and 300 thread count cotton bed linens are provided. We also offer 4 brand new beach chairs, a beach umbrella and a cooler for all of your seaside adventures. There is a small library with books, cards and games for guest enjoyment. We do not have TV, but we do have wireless internet, so you can surf the net and stream your favorite shows and movies from your laptop (we find that TV just distracts us from the beach :).

Esperanza is the only area on the island that is so easily accessible by foot or bike to so many beaches, attractions and amenities (the beaches in Isabel II are not nearly as beautiful or accessible as those on the south side near Esperanza). It is a small Caribbean fishing town with a very unique Vieques flair. All of our neighbors are Viequense, and most of their families have lived here for generations. This is by no means an isolated resort area or a gated development. We are a local community. Viva Esperanza is the place for people who want to have an authentic Vieques experience; walk around town and to beautiful beaches, immerse themselves in the culture, meet neighbors, learn about local history, perhaps practice their Spanish, and see the island through the eyes of the people who live and work here everyday.

As with every small town in Puerto Rico, there are many unique local sights, sounds and flavors - like the smell of slow cooked Sancocho on a Sunday afternoon, the sound of salsa or bachata playing on a tropical breeze, neighbors on Paso Fino horses trotting through town, children laughing and playing with their dogs, or the crow of a rooster welcoming a new day (there are roosters everywhere in Vieques; they even ride the ferry and fly in small planes with us, no joke). Again, there are roosters everywhere in Vieques, in every single neighborhood, no matter what, and it is a big part of our culture and island lifestyle (if you like to sleep late, the AC will definitely block out the sound, no problem). This is all a part of day to day life in Vieques, and it will be a part of your experience as well when you stay with us in Esperanza. Although the neighborhood is more active during the day, our neighbors usually go to bed really early, so it is generally very quiet and peaceful at night.

Your hosts, Lauren and Edison, have lived full time on Vieques for 5 years and know the island very well. Both of us have also worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years and have a passion for creating an awesome island experience for everyone who stays with us. We live upstairs and are on site to answer all of your questions, and help you plan the best vacation possible, with all of the inside info that only a local host can provide. We love helping our guests explore our favorite parts of the island, and sharing all of the special places that make Vieques so beautiful and unique. We highly recommend a car rental while you are here, so that you can venture out to the most remote undeveloped beaches in the Wildlife Reserve. However, if you do not have a car, you can easily walk, hike or bike to many places from the house. We can also arrange for a local publico or taxi to pick-up and drop-off at places that are further away from town.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to make recommendations and help you make arrangements for car or bike rentals, tours and outdoor adventures, restaurant reservations, etc, or just point you in the direction of our favorite reef or untouched beach. We have close relationships with local tour providers, restaurants, rental companies. and taxi services and can help you out with any of your vacation planning needs. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and sharing the incredible natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends, and family!

  • Our experience was great. Lauren was very nice and helpful. When we got there she made us rum punch and gave us a map of the island. They have a mango tree in the back yard and when we arrived home, Lauren put a bag of mangos by the door for us. The house was very nice and had every thing you would need for the week. They also provided beach chairs, towels, an umbrella, and beach bag. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I cant wait to go back and visit!

  • Lauren and Edison are awesome hosts! Two of the best I have ever met - really super friendly and helpful and Lauren greeted us (despite the fact we arrived lost and much later than planned) personally with delicious rum punches and marked up a map of Vieques that laid out the beaches, groceries, the Malecon and suggested great places to eat. The house is lovely and spacious and looks out towards the water from the back and even has a hammock in the front. It's in a great location - walkable to the Malecon and even Sun Bay as well as two convenience stores.

We really enjoyed staying here and I will definitely do so again whenever I'm lucky enough to be back in Vieques. I definitely recommend!

  • Our trip to Vieques island was made seamless thanks to Lauren and Edison’s accommodations and tips for our stay. She greeted us with a handy map that highlighted gas, food, stores, and beaches. The condo was open, clean, convenient and had essentials for our adventures to the beach such as towels, chairs, and a cooler bag which we packed food for the day (bought a Styrofoam cooler which kept our beverages cold). Vieques is a must for anyone traveling to Puerto Rico because of the crystal blue waters and white sanded beaches that seemed to slow down time. We fell in love with Lauren’s favorite beach, Navio which we would have never been able to get to without the Jeep we rented from Maritza’s. Thanks to Jeep, the map and picnic we were able to hit 6 different beaches in one day! Maritza’s was great too; they took us to and from the Ferry. Overall we had a great experience, and definitely recommend anyone stay here. We will confidently stay here again!!

  • We loved staying in Lauren and Edison's place in Esperanza, Vieques. Apart from being in the perfect location (close to great restaurants and the best beaches), the apartment was incredibly clean and comfortable. It was very nicely decorated and it had everything we needed. A nice surprise was that the beach chairs, umbrella, cooler bag, and towels were of great quality. We will definitely stay here again on our next visit to Vieques.

  • Wow! My friends and I had such a great in Vieques, and Lauren and Edison were the perfect hosts! They were so thorough in making sure all the arrangements for our trip were just right and that we made it safely to the island (the ferry doesn't run exactly on time all the time). They were even nice enough to call a taxi to meet us at the dock when we arrived (Lauren was there at the house to greet us with some great rum punch). The apartment itself is a wonderful space with all the essentials--the bedrooms are air conditioned, the kitchen, bathroom and living room all perfect for our needs--very comfortable! They even provided beach towels, beach chairs, and cooler bag. I really appreciate the fact that there's no tv as well, it really helps to slow everything down so you can really relax and enjoy the activities and pace of life on the island.

The Malecon is beautiful and has a host of great restaurants, but it's just as fun to grab some groceries at one of the local stores and cook in. Plus, there's a great bakery only a few blocks away that has fresh bread, pastries and sandwiches every morning.

It would definitely behoove you to rent a car while on the island. We tried to rough it and walk everywhere the first couple of days (which is great, you can get a lot of cool places that way) but to really see the best beaches an SUV is a must. The horse backing riding is also a must-do activity as far as I' concerned. Esperanza Riding Company (ERC) did a fabulous job--probably one of my very favorite experiences of the whole week. It's certainly the best way to see the island!

All in all, a terrific first experience with Airbnb. If all the hosts are as wonderful, knowledgable, and super helpful as Lauren and Edison, I can't wait to travel again!

  • This is the perfect place for anyone visiting Esperanza. Lauren and Edison were excellent hosts, and incredibly helpful with ways to get onto the island with taxi and ferry info! Once we arrived , we were greeted with rum punch and had a brief chat about the best beaches and restaurant info. Their location is walking distance from Malecon so we walked there every night after a day of beach activity. The loft itself is wonderfully kept, clean , and welcoming to come to in the evening. They provide beach supplies, towels, chairs, and a cooler. Would love to visit again!!!

  • Lauren & Edison were great hosts! Upon arrival they helped us (our taxi driver) find the house which is tucked away among the locals. It is a short walk to the malecon and two convenience stores. L&E helped us plan which beaches to go to based off our interests. A car would be convenient to explore more remote parts of the island but we made do with a scooter rental from fun guys rentals which was more affordable and fun. The roosters are a little noisy in the mornings but waking up early was a plus on this island. The house was very clean, the bed was comfy, and the kitchen was convenient for breakfast. Lauren also gave us a simple recipe for rum punch that we utilized throughout our trip. Would love to return soon!!

  • Our stay in Esperanza was great! The host, Lauren was really helpful and gave a ton of suggestions on what to do and see around the island. She was able to provide us with a helpful map of all the beaches and stores in the area. The condo was very clean and exactly as it appears on the photos, was a very comfortable stay for 4 people. The walk to the restaurants and the beachfront was very quick. We hiked to most of the beaches and rented scooters for the last day to visit the Blue Beach, was definitely worth it. Will definitely come back again for a visit to paradise!

  • This apartment was very spacious and clean, and cool with plenty of breeze and air conditioner in the bedroom. Hostess Lauren was very helpful. We appreciated the beach stuff being provided as well as guidebooks etc. This is a very simple place in a modest neighborhood with lots of dogs and roosters but we slept fine with the ac.

  • We had a lovely time staying in Esperanza! The apartment is perfect, has everything you need for your island getaway. Lauren even provides beach chairs and a cooler! Lauren was there to greet us on our first night, despite our ferry being an hour late. She had rum punch waiting and a map pinpointing all her favorite beaches. She was very helpful and sweet! The malecon (restaurants, bars, beautiful sunset views) was only a 10 minute walk away. Lots of animal sounds, coqui frogs put us to sleep at night and roosters woke us up in the morning. Bring earplugs if you are a sensitive sleeper. We didn't mind all the sounds, though! Overall, one of my best vacations ever! Loved it here.

Lauren and Edison are originally from Brooklyn, NY and Englewood, NJ (via Bogota, Colombia). We moved to Vieques 5 years ago to renovate her family home in Esperanza and fulfill her mothers dream of making it into a small guest house. In the process, we fell in love with the island and decided to make Vieques our full time home. Both of us have worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years, and actually met while planning guest adventures for National Geographic Expeditions. When we are not working, or fixing up the house, we enjoy exploring this beautiful little island that we call home. We love going to the beach, swimming, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, hiking, camping, exploring, cliff jumping, grilling, beach bonfires, and pretty much any outdoor activity that brings us closer to nature and helps us appreciate the wonders of island life. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and sharing the natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends and family!
