HISTORY OF THE SANCTUARY

of SAN GERARDO

The hamlet "San Gerardo", is part of the Municipality of(URL HIDDEN) Piedimonte Etneo located at the foot of Etna in the province of Catania. The name San Gerardo, where today stands the Sanctuary, replaces "the ancient" name of the district Millicucco. This replacement is due to a local lady, Donna Menica Mazza, who, who found an imagination of Majella's taumaturg, asks for his healing from the saint and obtains it tells his neighbors and the clerk of the heavenly visions and wonders carried out by San Gerardo. So Donna Menica begins to collect the funds necessary for the creation of a church dedicated to the saint. This building was also born thanks to the contribution of some immigrants and the income of the genres in nature that Donna Menica collects from home in all the countries of (URL HIDDEN) first church, on land, ceded, free of charge by Mazza herself, blessed by the archest Cannavò Rosario on September 3, 1928. Then every Sunday and the 6th of each month the Santo Messe celebrations are celebrated; the small church is no longer able to welcome the folio of devotees, and so you are thinking of building a larger church in the immediate vicinity. On the project of the engineer Vicars of Acireale, work began on the new church, which was completed and blessed on 31 August 1941 by the Bishop of the Diocese of Acireale, Monsignor Salvatore Russo, who erected it as a parish. The first pastor is the priest Pappalardo Giuseppe succeeded by Don Carmelino Linguaglossa. Subsequently, (due to a shortage of priests), the parish was suppressed. The devout faithful express the desire to elevate the Church to a sanctuary, but this request is not accepted by the Bishop due to the lack of adequate structures for the reception of pilgrims who, despite this, continue to fill the Church in the course of religious activities and functions. On October 16, 1999, this request was presented to the new Bishop H.E. Msgr. Cristina who, having noted the good will of the faithful, the imminent arrival of the Jubilee Year and since there is already a land in the possession of the Church in the immediate vicinity, allows the construction of a structure suitable for welcoming pilgrims. The same Vescovo buys prefabricated ones to increase the initiative. This begins to work at the new "pilgrimage reception" center with the help of volunteers and patrons at the expense of great sacrifices, showing always availability and collaboration: all the work of private individuals and businesses has been carried out as anonymous. On June 16, 2000 at 18:00, H.E. Msgr. Gristina, together with the local administrators and many faithful (see photo), elèva to SANCTUARY the CHURCH OF SAN GERARDO, blessing also the center of "pilgrims welcome" where the STATUE OF OUR LADY OF THE SMILE was placed.

The FEAST OF SAINT GERARD IS CELEBRATED EVERY YEAR ON the last SUNDAY OF AUGUST, PRECEDED BY A PILGRIMAGE ON FOOT the PREVIOUS SUNDAY and A WEEK OF PREPARATION and REFLECTIONS ON THE LIFE OF THE SAINT.
