This is an adorable and romantic one bedroom cottage nestled in a mango tree across the road from the ocean. There is a built in queen bed in the bedroom upstairs, and a queen futon couch in the living room. There is a full kitchen, and a large marble bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and multiple shower heads. The tub is working very well after being fixed in July. The house is an A frame structure with very high ceilings and sky lights in the bedroom so it is very bright and open. There are french doors in the bedroom that go out to the lanai and there is a nice view of the neighborhood. You can see just a sliver of ocean, which is only just across the street. Our places are all in the middle of all the north shore beaches with in a miles distance. We are only 3/4 mile from Paia town and all the fun places to eat are there and the famous Mana foods, the best health food store on the island. We would love to have you with us! If you have a large group, The Green Turtle House with two bedrooms is on the same property. Our county permit number is #2013/2022
This is a charming, older house. Upon arrival everything was clean and tidy, with little chocolates even waiting for us. Bed is lifted upon a wooden platform, thus there is only a mattress, not a box spring. Bathroom is also located on the lower level, while bedroom is located on the upper floor, this was slightly inconvenient. Paia is located on the north side of the island, we were first time visitors to Maui and didn't realize how far we were from the good beaches and other tourists excursions on the south side. This was kind of a disappointment to us but could've been avoided with more research done on our part. However with that being said, Paia is perfectly located for driving the road to Hana, or if you are a windsurfer/surfer (waves are much bigger on this side) it is also a nice town with shopping and restaurants. Be aware if you are not a "bug person". Like other reviewers, we saw two large spiders and two geckos. These are admittedly harmless, however personally left me feeling uneasy for our stay. The downside to the age of the home is there are windows that don't shut tight, hence the bugs.
I am very torn. A side of me wants to trash this place only so that it remains my own little private paradise, but alas, the world deserves to share in its greatness. :) I use AIRBNB almost every time I travel...both domestically and and abroad, and this was the best experience yet. It couldn't have been more romantic, with the sleeping area and vaulted ceilings, and the bathroom?!?!?! Its very hard to leave the bathroom, but tear yourself away from the sunken tub, as I promise Maui has more to offer :) Maui is a one of a kind place, and this may be the absolute perfect place to stay on the island...at least for me, and those like me. I am not a resort, all inclusive, type of person that when traveling wants to be at the hotel the whole time, and shut off from the place I'm visiting. I can understand how someone would want to have their own private beach front, but on Maui you are literally surrounded by beaches!! We went to a dozen beaches ranging from .25 mile to 30 miles away, and NONE were crowded; all were amazing.
Plus, to stay at one place in Maui, a place that begs to be explored with countless things to see, on such a small accessible island is heresy. And THAT, my friends, is what makes this place the PERFECT place to stay when on Maui - a ideal "home base". The gingerbread house felt like my home. I felt like I was having the most authentic, whole, Maui Experience possible, while having the amenities of a hotel, but in my OWN PRIVATE SETTING! It is 5 MINUTES from the airport, .25 mile from PAIA which is an adorable not-too-touristy town with great food (I recommend Dazoo and Hail'imaile general store, about 10 miles away), and a jump start on the hana highway drive which is one-of-a-kind experience. The check in experience is as easy as could be, and even on a holiday (we were there for thxgiving) there was someone checking up to make sure everything was kosher. I will SURELY be staying there again within the next 6 months. I still dream about being there. :) Do yourself a favor - rent a car (don't fall for them trying to upsell you on a jeep), rent the gingerbread house, and have a vacation you'll never forget. Oh, and for the people who may comment about little creature visitors in the house, all I saw was one gecko...and he was very cute and a welcome sight. :)
Das Gingerbread House war einfach nur super. Wir haben uns wie zu Hause gefühlt. Es war alles sauber und sehr schön dekoriert. Wir würden immer wieder das Haus buchen.

My husband and I stayed in the adorable Gingerbread House at the beginning of our recent vacation to Maui. The house is located in the cute beach town of Paia, which we found to be a great location for accessing the sites along the Road to Hana and the Haleakala Crater. When we arrived, we called Megan to check in and decided there was no need to meet in person. The house was unlocked and keys and clear instructions were provided in a binder on the counter. The house was just as pictured, with one bedroom and just enough room for one couple. Everything was clean and in good working order. I would note that this rental is definitely a beach house. Small critters easily got inside, including ants (be sure to keep ALL food in the refrigerator), numerous geckos (which were cool to see), and a few spiders. The house is located close to beaches and the main shops/restaurants in Paia, but the area is not very walkable since the road is narrow and sidewalks are sporadic. We mostly drove everywhere. Overall, the Gingerbread House met our expectations, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in a beach house in Paia.
This was for our honeymoon. We stayed in Lahaina for 4 days, but wanted to be closer to Paia, Road to Hana and experience real Hawaii, so we booked the Gingerbread house.
Always loved the neighborhood. The house looked cool and was surprising that it was a 3 floor all to ourselves. Very convenient location to Paia, Beaches, Airport, Mama's Fish House and Road to Hana. This is a surfer or outdoorsy type's dream. Free parking and laundry too! Very peaceful and quiet. Awesome balcony off the master bedroom. Loved that they recycled and had a fridge, stove, etc.
As for a honeymoon, it didn't work out for us. We checked in (Megan was very cool), got settled and unpacked, then went to Mama's Fish House for dinner. When we came back, we tried to go to sleep but it was hot! Fans are present but it was really hot in the house (maybe because of Hurricane Iselle). My wife also got eaten alive by all the bugs. When I say eaten alive, I mean, I was literally afraid for her health. Gekkos were all over the place too. We spotted 4 gekkos in 5 minutes. They don't bother me, I actually like them, but they bothered my wife. We also saw a large spider/scorpion like insect in the hot tub.
Sad to say, it was a VERY charming place - but we packed our bags the same night and drove to a nearby Courtyard Marriot (I know, sucks).
Megan couldn't offer a full refund because she couldn't book the days we didn't stay. It's OK. This hopefully was just a really super hot week that attracted all the bugs. The price was $666. Maybe it was a sign! LOL.
Anyway, it was our honeymoon, stuff happens and makes for a great story. Megan was very responsive, very friendly and has a gem of a location.
4.5 stars overall. Loved the style of this house-- high vaulted ceilings throughout and large balcony off the bedroom (which was shaded by a large tree). No view, but location is very convenient (right off Hana Hwy, minutes from ocean and Paia). Clean, reasonably priced and working Wifi. Had jacuzzi, but didn't try because weather was too hot. Hosts were communicative throughout.
Great little spot to stay. We spent three nights, and found the Gingerbread House very airy and cute. Three minute drive to downtown Paia, which is our favorite town on the island. Recommended!
