Our sailing catamaran brought us across the Caribbean & the Pacific Ocean and is now moored at an inner-city Brisbane marina. You will have your own hull with 2 cabins and 1 toilet. Beautiful views of the Story Bridge. A distinctive experience!
Have you ever stayed on a catamaran? A sail boat? A real one that has crossed oceans and has some battle scars and flaking paint to show for it? Not a luxury marina queen, but a functional combination of British design and German workmanship that came together to provide you with a bunk rather than a bed. Drift off to sleep with the tinkle of the Brisbane River flowing past your cabin window.
One complete hull with two double cabins and a bathroom for you. (A catamaran has 2 hulls.) For a decent shower, they are on the shore and we will give you a key.
There is free parking in some of the streets around Kangaroo Point or under cover parking at the end of Ferry St for $10/day.
We like to meet interesting people from all over the world. We also have our own lives and responsibilities, so our interaction with you just depends on what you want to do and what plans we have at the time. At the very least, we will point you in the right direction for activities and attractions around Brisbane. Or we will lay around on the trampoline with you and a bottle of wine and swap stories of the world.
Kangaroo Point has become a trendy inner city, river front suburb. There are various restaurants and one iconic pub, the Story Bridge Hotel, within 500 metres.
The Story Bridge itself is lit up each night with a beautiful display which can be admired from our deck. The only traffic noise is the deep thump-splash-thump of the paddle wheel boats, the deep thrumming of the little ferries or the whoosh of the city cats. No cars!
There is a FREE ferry service (City Hopper) to take you to New Farm, the City Centre (Eagle St Pier) or Southbank. It is less than 100 m away.
The taxi fare to the airport is about $50 or there is a train between the airport and Central for $16.50 each.
A few things about a boat.....
The toilet requires pumping after use - there are no flush toilets!
Double bunks are also "nautical" and are shorter and more narrow than your average double bed on land. If you over 6' tall, you will have to bend your body somewhere to fit!
If you listen, you can clearly hear the marine life eating, clacking their claws and interacting with the outside of the hulls. It is a symbiotic relationship between fibreglass, crustaceans, fish, barnacles and seaweed.
Other yachties think our boat is huge for our small family, while land people think it is like a small studio apartment. It all depends on your perspective!
Also important to note, is that boats have souls. And feelings! We have travelled a lot together and shared many adventures ranging from the terror-filled to the tedious, and from the spiritually uplifting to a ridiculous excess of adrenalin. She has met sea lions, whales, turtles, dolphins, sharks, octopus and penguins. She has felt the bounty of the sea hit her decks, only to be cooked and devoured within hours. She has experienced sub-zero temperatures, doldrum calms, furious gales and years of tropical sun. She has saved our lives in tricky situations and we have saved hers. We are truly a team. We try to show our love with endless care of her systems and vital organs.
If you stay with us, you will not just be sleeping in some sort of floating accommodation - you will be held tenderly within the womb of a living, well travelled creature....
We were delighted at being able to stay on a boat instead of the usual hotel accommodation. Jim was friendly and helpful and so was his son Carib, a lovely boy indeed! The boat was clean, easy to manoeuvre around and the entire stay was a great experience. Being a few minutes walk to the City Hopper ferry with restaurants and pubs nearby was an additional bonus. Thank you Jim, Lily and Carib for having us. We enjoyed it and it was a very relaxing ambience.
We stayed with Jim, Lily and Calib over Australia day weekend.
The catamaran was fantastic and the kids loved exploring and climbing in and out of all the 'porthole' windows. For a boat it was plenty big enough, with good clean facilities for cooking, sleeping and our own toilet area. Jim met us off the hopper and was very friendly, discussing ways for us to get around the city. It was also interesting chatting to him and Calib, about their adventures. They kindly engaged with the boys, setting them up to trapeze around the boat! They also gave us plenty of space and privacy which was appreciated, alot of the time we had the boat to ourselves.
We can heartily recommend staying here with these guys, great people, great unique accomodation and great location for easily exploring New Farm, Kangaroo Point, Southbank and West End and even the Main City area, due to free Hopper Ferry, walking/bike tracks and bridges....awesome!
Jim and his family are the perfect hosts. The Catamaran is a unique place to spend a short stay in Brisbane. It is perfectly located to the city which is reachable on the free City Hopper Ferry and a short walk from some bars and shops. It is exactly as it is described, so if you want to do something different in Brisbane for accommodation. Please book up. It will be worth it! Thanks for reading my story. Rob
We had a great stay with Jim and his lovely family on the catamaran. It was easy to get to, conveniently located, and our hosts were lovely.
We loved staying not he Catamaran with Jim and family. He was a very welcoming and helpful host. It was a great way to stay in Brisbane, no cars nearby, lovely walks around a very interesting old area and the gentle rocking of the Cat to be lulled into one of the best sleeps I've had for ages. The location is brilliant with the free ferry up and down the river really near and so much accessible from it. The only thing I would say is that we were lucky we were shorties - if you were really tall and you wanted a bed you could stretch out lengthways it wouldn't be great for you. Thanks Jim :) it was a very pleasant and memorable experience.
It was great to stay with them at the marina at Dockside in Brisbane. What a peaceful experience… Their stories from all their travels were so nice to share. I am very thankful I had my own 1/2 of the boat and living area all to myself. The set up was really ideal.
Great job, thank you!!
Jim's catamaran is probably one of the most original places I've stayed in, using Airbnb. It's moored in a great location and was fun to get there by the cityhopper which gives you a great view of the city. Slept like a log, rocked by the water. But you do need to remember that it is a catamaran and so space is at a premium.
What a wonderful place to stay in Brisbane! The boat is located about 25 meters from the free Cityhopper ferry that will take you to/from downtown in no time at all. In fact, it's so close that you can look out the window and see when the ferry is arriving and just walk over. Jim was a great host and super responsive. If you're looking for a unique travel experience, this is the property.
