pacific view cottage

House - Entire home/apt · Occidental, CA, United States

The Space

A peaceful retreat inspired by Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio’s Italian villas offers complete privacy- a romantic getaway or solitary sanctuary. Enjoy views of the Sonoma coast countryside and the Pacific Ocean beyond from your private hideaway. Pacific view cottage is the most popular offering in Airbnb’s 'Romantic Getaway' collection.
Four miles west of the town of Occidental, the cottage sits on the coastal ridge four miles inland from the Pacific ocean. At about 800’ elevation, the cottage is often above the coastal fog but can also provide refuge from the summer heat. Set among oak, fir, and bay laurel trees, it has vistas of the surrounding coastal hills with the Pacific beyond.
A steep, winding road from the syrah vineyard leads down through the forest to the two-level cottage. A sweeping terra cotta staircase takes you to the upper level of the cottage.
The living area upstairs has a seating area with Swedish comfort chairs, as well as a dining table and chairs. The kitchen area has a refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker as well as dishes and cooking equipment to prepare meals or snacks. French doors upstairs lead to two small decks, one with a bistro table and chairs providing a spot for a meal and views to the Pt. Reyes lighthouse on a clear day.
A spiral staircase leads to a bedroom and bath below. The bedroom on the lower level has a double (full) size bed with down comforter and CD/clock radio with ipod/iphone dock. French doors lead to decks on three sides; the decks provide sweeping views of the woods and hills beyond. Enjoy views of the outdoors from two sides of the shower. We provide fresh linens, towels, hair dryer, iron, soap and shampoo, and bathrobes for your use.
Both levels of the cottage have hydronically heated stone floors.
You'll share this private retreat with the occasional red fox, pileated woodpecker, hummingbird, deer, vulture, golden eagle or banana slug.
Hiking, biking, wineries, scenic drives, and restaurants are all nearby. A little more than an hour from San Francisco, the cottage is 15 minutes from the Sonoma coast beaches, 5 minutes from scenic Coleman Valley Road, 4 miles to the quaint village of Occidental with its unique shops, wine tasting and restaurants. We are a scenic 30 mile drive from Point Reyes Station and the National Seashore. In 15 minutes, you can be at a number of great Sonoma County wineries. Healdsburg is a 40 minute drive.
There is no land line phone, high speed internet or tv. Most, but not all, cell phones work here.
One of our first guests explained it best: “Waking up this morning in the middle of the woods, we decided this just might be the most beautiful place on earth.”

  • A most comfortable and welcoming house in the most beautiful location. The stunning views in every direction, bright stars, and remoteness encourages slowing down and taking it easy. The warmth from the heated floors paired with a constant breeze through screened doors keeps the house at exactly the right temperature.

Occidental has everything you could need for a long weekend away - amazing local food and wine, beautiful drives and hikes, and just enough local color. Highly recommended!

  • The Pacific View Cottage was perfect! Poor weather during part of our stay did not hamper our enjoyment at all-- even in heavy rain, the views were fabulous. In the sun, things were even more stunning. It was really cool to have breakfast in the sun on one of the balconies, while hawks circled above. Though it was secluded, I didn't at all find it isolated. It was just a short distance from a bunch of Sonoma towns. The Barlow in Sebastopol is like a Disneyland for food and drink. I can't totally unplug so I appreciated that I had a good 4G signal on my phone. How could I vacation without being connected?. Internet is possible in Occidental!!!!

The cottage itself was well-appointed. The kitchen was well-stocked, and pretty complete. Al and Virginia were the best hosts, and were super friendly. I especially liked all the information Al gave us about places to go, things to see, and wineries to visit. Very helpful! Thanks, Al and Virginia!!

  • Al is amazing and so is his lovely cottage. Tucked away in the middle of a quiet vineyard, no phone, no internet, no cable tv, its an off the grid heaven.
My Wife and I live in the city and work in stressful startups. It is refreshing to get away to Occidental and have nothing but each-other to focus on for a weekend. I highly recommend this location!

  • Peace and Quiet in a pristine setting. Amazingly designed cottage!

It was our first time with Airbnb due to the wonderful property and location. We travel frequently to the Occidental Area (we recommend osmosis spa!) but this was the first time we stayed overnight. The cottage was spacious, beautiful, well-stocked. It is fit for the 70 degree sun & perfect in the rain too. The sunset viewing is a nice way to spend the hours after arriving.

Alex was a wonderful host. His annotated map of the area is priceless - and the books of the trails helped us plan our day to a 'starfish sanctuary' on the coast.

Everything was so quiet, you could hear the birds fly and the rain fall. What a relaxing time!

  • I absolutely recommend the pacific view cottage. It rained the whole weekend, but the cottage was cozy, warn, and a great place to enjoy a lazy weekend watching the storm.

  • We love this place! Just a few minutes from the tiny town of Occidental in the coastal forest. Was a full moon and warm all weekend. We stayed 3 nights. One of the coolest things about the cabin is the radiant floor heat. So quiet and isolated. Also love the big shower and compact well designed kitchen. We cooked every meal here and went on day hikes in the surrounding redwood groves. Shopped at Molly Stones in Sausalito on our way out of the city. On Sunday we went to the Sebastapol farmers market for some more goodies after a wonderful hike in the Armstrong Woods. Great time all around... BIG thank you to our hosts for all the wonderful touches in our acommodations. Locally roasted coffee, organic milk, teas, fruit, juice, great towels, linens, books, maps. Perfect!

    January 2014
  • This cottage is amazingly situated on a peaceful mountaintop surrounded by forest and vineyards. It's gorgeous and silent and completely private. Our only complaint was the bed, which is a full and too small for 2 adults to sleep comfortably--a big minus on a kid-free getaway. We also wished there has been a small sofa or love seat instead of the chairs upstairs.
But it is still a very comfortable, well-appointed and beautiful place.

  • Our stay at Alex’s cabin was wonderful. The cabin, scenery and view are captivating. The cabin has been outfitted with nice linens, cookware and everyday essentials. We also found the map (Alex had amended with local restaurants/shops to visit) quite helpful. There are so many fun hikes, wineries and unique places to explore nearby. We would stay there again!

  • What an amazing and beautiful cottage and location. This was our 2nd stay at Pacific cottage and it was fabulous! The bnb is super clean and comfortable, the wifi works and Alex leaves great coffee and tea and milk and juice and little treats around -

    December 2013
  • The place was great, Alex met us and showed us the house, which was a short drive down a road from a vineyard.

Inside there's an upstairs kitchen area with small balcony's on two sides and down the stairs is the bedroom. There's no internet as the listing says, which was a blessing for us to get away from our computers and phones and enjoy the beautiful view.

In the kitchen there was plenty of tea, coffee and snacks to help us pass the time peacefully. The bedroom is a simple round room with a full sized bed. We would have preferred a larger bed but it was sufficient for our stay. The bathroom is nice and spacious with an open shower.

Overall it was a great relaxing stay!
