La Specola is a beautiful and prestigious historical house overlooking Lake Bracciano from the old and tranquil town of Anguillara Sabazia (only 40 minutes away from Rome by car and 70 minutes with public transportations).
Recently restored in 2014, the house is tastefully decorated with antique furniture and fully equipped with modern facilities (full HD TV 42', wi-fi in every room, air conditioning, Playstation 3, hair dryer, iron, etc.).
Interaction with Guests
La Specola boasts 290 m2 (3200 ft2) of indoor space, 60 m2 (650 ft2) of outdoor terrace, 40 m2 (130 ft2) of outdoor garden and can very comfortably host up to 6 people. The property is composed of 3 en-suite double bedrooms, a spacious and bright living room with exceptional architecture and breath taking views over the lake, an antique fireplace, a very functional rustic kitchen, a utility room, a large terrace and a private entrance with an idealic garden. In addition, guests can enjoy an extensive selection of books in French, English and Italian (to be read on the chaise longue overlooking the lake!) as well as an original Erard piano of 1828. Due to its strategic location and its magnificent terrace, the house enjoys unique views of Lake Bracciano and is ideal for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.
The property is situated in the historical center of Anguillara Sabazia in a very tranquil pedestrian area and therefore is not directly accessible by car (guests might consider there are about 20 steps to reach the entrance from the parking). All main points of interest are very nearby at not more than 5 minutes walk: beach and aquatic sport clubs, restaurants, bars, shops, supermarket and parking.
The area surrounding Lake Bracciano offers a wide ranging list of indoor and outdoor activities, as well as its stunning beauty. There are numerous places of historical interest in the vicinity to visit such as Castello Odescalchi (Tom Cruise and Ketie Holmes’ wedding location!), pretty old towns and other UNESCO sites to discover. The sport facilities available range from golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing, biking, sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, trekking to serene promenades in The Natural Park of Bracciano. But most importantly, the enogastronomy of the region is simply exquisite and can be enjoyed in the abundance of local restaurants.
In order to make your stay unforgettable it is possible to ask for extra services such as: chauffeur, welcome aperitif, touristic tours (Bracciano surrounding or Rome), a cot for baby, cleaning on demand, inhouse massage, inhouse cooking school, inhouse catering services, inhouse classical concert, etc.

We had a great experience. The apartment is beautiful, just as depicted in the profile. The atmosphere of the house was pleasant and relaxing. The town is lovely, but very quiet in the winter. Paolo has everything set up very nicely and the house manager Mrs. PéLé was very accommodating when ever we needed help. The communication with the host was seamless, as well. We will definitely consider coming back!
La Specola was a connoisseur's gem: an understated combination of rustic charm with aristocratic elegance. The perfect getaway for the discerning traveler who seeks to retire to an Italian, Medieval lakeside village in the comfort of an unassuming but sophisticated pied-à-terre.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The spacious and comfortable apartment not only offered stunning views over lake Bracciano and the medieval rooftops, but provided a tasteful interior that is curiously poised between stately and cosy. We found ourselves torn between exploring the surrounding regions and simply relaxing "at home", playing the piano, reading a book, enjoying the view, or taking tea while our children alternated between playing cards or the Playstation under the gaze of ancestral portraits.
The modern commodities were very adequately appointed without detracting from authentic European charm. Those seeking the sterile American standards for kitchens or bathrooms may prefer a Hilton, or to stay home, but La Specola is a subtle experience of European privilege and discernment. We look forward to returning.
La Specola is situated in the middle of Anguillara and is truly a unique a experience. The views over the lake, the spacious house and the feeling of living in such a picturesque village is extraordinaire. Paolo is a great host and really made us feel as vip guests. This is our third AirBnb experience and none has been so good and professionally handled. This places comes with my highest recommendations.
Oh, one thing to consider is that you always have to walk a few stairs to get to La Specola, you can´t reach it by car at all.
I was looking for somewhere with great views of the lake and somewhere which had tasteful interior. La Specola delivered on both accounts. From the moment we contacted Paolo he was a perfect host for our four night stay. We would highly recommend La Specola.
Paolo and Ms Pe'Le' were wonderful hosts. The property is beautiful and we wished we could have spent more than 4 days in such a beautiful location.
Our stay was made even more special when I arranged (with the fantastic assistance of Pe'Le' and Paolo) a romantic dinner at La Specola complete with private 3 piece orchestra and 5 course meal as a setting for my proposal of marriage to my beautiful partner ....... which she accepted !
We will be back for sure.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay! I recommend this property very highly.
La Specola is a great villa in a lovely village near Rome. The house is very nice. The view is awesome. Paolo is very kind. We had a great weekend! Restaurant La Nepitella Di Martini Federico is also a tip. 2 minutes from the house. Federico was so kind to show us around. And his mother desserts are super.
La Specola is simply--wonderful--as in out of a dream--wonderful. Nestled in a quaint, authentically Italian, local resort unspoiled by tourism, one enters the apartment through 2 iron gates and a small entry garden. Overlooking a magnificent, crystal clear, utterly inviting lake, the apartment is superb with beautiful tile floors, 14-foot rafter ceilings, and centuries' old antique furniture. Boat rentals and swimming are easily accessible by walking down the narrow, cobbled streets of the village. The apartment itself is gorgeously appointed and furnished with family heirlooms. Everything was clean and in order and our host Paolo was a consummate gentleman who was helpful and hospitable in every respect. We loved our stay at La Specola and have recommended the place to our friends. To make one's stay perfect here, I would throw out three things to be aware of: 1. Do not leave anything in your car. Ours was broken into and we were robbed. 2. The town is wonderfully quiet and peaceful during the day. The townsfolk--especially the younger ones--do come out at night and can become quite lively in the wee hours. Close the windows and turn on the A/C and you should sleep fine. Or wear earplugs as I did.
3. The mosquitoes do come out at night. Yet another reason to close the windows in the evening. La Specola is such wonderful place that even with the above caveats I would return to this magical abode overlooking this gorgeous lake in this dreamy village. It is an undiscovered paradise and a perfect place from which to visit Rome if you relish the idea of escaping masses of tourists at the end of a day to return to your own, private paradise. Or forget Rome and enjoy halcyon days basking in the sunshine of the Italian countryside enjoying an exquisite villa on a picture perfect lake in an ancient Italian village.
