Centrally located, this one bedroom apartment is ready to show you a true San Francisco experience. The neighborhood has a wide range of restaurants, small shops and bars reflecting the melting pot of cultures.
The Apartment is located on the second story of a two story building, above a popular art Gallery in the Tenderloin. When it's not rented for airbnb, the space houses international artists that show at the gallery. The space is ideal for 2-4 people, with two queen beds in the bedroom.
There is a large roof which guests are welcome to enjoy from 6am-10pm, like a backyard space. We enjoy lunching on the roof regularly and live in the second apartment across the hallway. The roof is shared, otherwise the apartment is private.
Interaction with Guests
Because we also live in the building, we can be accessed easily for inquiries or recommendations. We also enjoy privacy and can respect yours, so friendly hellos in the hallway are fine and you can be left to enjoy your adventure.
The neighborhood is vibrant, with a mixture of residential and commercial buildings. There are tons of places to eat and drink and explore without being too "touristy", it feels like a true San Francisco neighborhood.
Public transit runs all around the area. We are very central, everywhere that you want to get to in the city is most likely walking distance or a short bus ride.
Other Things to Note
There is street parking in the neighborhood which is metered from around 9 am to 6 pm, and a few different parking garages close by that charge around $25/day.
Helen was a wonderful host and the apartment was fantastic. The description was perfect, the location ideal, and Helen was super helpful in pointing out places within the neighborhood to check out. Staying at Helen's place was one of the highlights of the trip!
Helen's place is definitely a hidden gem. We had a wonderful stay! Great value!
Great place. Overall style of the apartment and easy access to the terrace make it a kind of bohemian hideout in the middle of Tenderloin. Helen is very friendly and it was very easy to negotiate our delayed arrival time with her. There are house cats that visited the place a few times and were super nice to us. I wish we stayed longer!
It was great! The neighborhood looks a little bit sketchy, but it has a lot of bark and no bite. Helen made great recommendations and was easy to communicate with. The space was clean and comfortable and was filled with great artwork. It is on a busy street, but Helen has a jar of earplugs in the bathroom which made a good night's sleep easily attainable. The bed was comfortable, as well. The only downfall was that the wifi had a pretty weak signal in the apartment, which in my case, prevented me from getting work done in the evenings (which I may have been OK with). Otherwise, everything was great! I would definitely stay again.
Helen (& her partner Justin) provided a warm welcome to their home here in SF. They were the consummate hosts and provide a truly lovely apartment, complete with the lovely back deck. If I need a place to stay in downtown SF again, I'll be staying with Helen & Justin!
For travels not familiar with the Tenderloin, it's a loud and pretty "raw" neighborhood... as it has been for years. Tasty coffee shops & great restaurants are popping up (hello, gentrification), but the community that the Tenderloin has served (those down on their luck) remains.
While I felt safe and comfortable in the neighborhood, the main issue this created for me was street noise while sleeping, as the bedroom is on the street. I'm a fairly light sleeper, so this made ear plugs a must, but I still woke up some times due to street noise.
What a great stay at this apartment! It was clean, well stocked with essentials, had kitties, and tons of interesting art to look at. Helen was also a great host. She had a prior commitment during our arrival time, so she left the keys and a note with a friend in the art gallery below the apartment. It was easy and convenient to both check in and check out. As a few others had stated, when we first arrived, we did feel the neighborhood was a touch rough, however, my boyfriend and I felt safe enough to walk around at night after dinner. A few others had mentioned the street noise as being problematic, however, despite the fact that I'm a light sleeper, the noise level really wasn't that bothersome. On our next visit to San Francisco, my boyfriend and I would gladly stay at this apartment again.
We had a lovely stay in Helen's apartment! Helen was very easy to communicate with, and even helped us carry our bags in when we got there!
Out of the handful of places I've stayed at through AirBnb, this one was the most spacious. We enjoyed sitting out on the rooftop patio and getting visited by the cats!
I should mention that it's not the nicest/cleanest neighborhood, but it was never really a problem for us. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed our stay!
I am an Artist that originally came to San Francisco to study painting. I enjoy traveling, art museums, and spending time with my boyfriend and my two cats.
