El Nido — the Nest — is a stylish, enchanting one bedroom, one bath in-law apartment on the first floor of our mid-century home perched among the trees of the Oakland Hills. A bit magical, and profoundly comfortable, El Nido is a great spot to retreat, reflect and create. We are hyper vigilant about cleanliness and sanitation, and do all we can to ensure this is your soft place to fall — or maybe find your wings?

Read a below for all Nido has to offer (and what it does not!).

The space
El Nido is a 800+ square feet in-law apartment with its own private entrance on the lower floor of our mid-century home. It features it's own private deck, floor to ceiling windows, hardwood floors, an eclectic mix of modern and vintage furnishings and original artwork with an international flair.

Features include:

• private redwood deck under canopy of fragrant cedar and oak trees.

• light-filled master suite with queen-sized platform bed and view of the woods

• large, living room with floor to ceiling windows that open onto private deck.

• single futon

• kitchenette with full-size refrigerator, microwave and electic teapot

• TV with Netflix, Comcast

• Large desk and business amenities, including high speed internet, 33" monitor, printer + office supplies

We encourage you to open to the peace, quiet and natural beauty El Nido has to offer while here — strum our guitar, write a poem, sing a song, tell a story, take a nap. If you love travel and life's simple pleasures, you're going to love it here! (If you prefer a more corporate hotel-chain atmosphere, this is not a fit!) While at El Nido you may want to enjoy:

• Morning local roastery coffee in bed with one of our many books.
• A free online yoga class at our local yoga studio
• Food delivery from one of Oakland's famous independent restaurants
• Viewing nearby wildlife like deer (and fawns!), owls, hawks, turkeys and more.
• A glass of chilled Napa Valley wine on the deck at sunset.
• A hot bath before falling asleep to the sound of crickets.

We provide access to laundry facilities located in our home upon request.

Where you’ll be

Oakland, California, United States

Montclair is a lush, wooded neighborhood in the Oakland Hills, about 17 miles from San Francisco and 10-15 minutes by car to most popular Oakland/Berkeley neighborhoods. It is nestled at the intersection of three canyons and borders several regional parks with literally hundreds of miles of hiking and bicycling trails.

Montclair Village is a 5 minute drive (or a really nice 30-minute walk along a old railroad trail), where you can find excellent restaurants and shopping.

Our guest guide is full of little-known finds and personal recommendations for places truly "Oaklandish" you can enjoy with in-person, take-out or delivery during the pandemic.

My husband Lalo and I are both "cats with nine lives". I am a former vocalist who now owns a nearby yoga studio (and specializes in yogic sound practices.) Lalo is a Facilities Director with an MFA in Sculpture. Between the two of us we have had substantial lives in dance, music, political theater, instrument making, visual arts, yoga, arts administration, marketing & public relations, and I can't even remember what else. I travel extensively — including taking groups of yoga students on international trips  (India, Mexico, Morocco, Italy, Cuba, Japan) — and view travel as a form of yoga, a transformative experience. I like to use Airbnb when I travel, and choose my rentals as much for the owners as I do for the spaces. I love to meet interesting people, and delight in sharing with others those things I feel make life rich and beautiful. My life motto? Have mercy.
