El Nido (the Nest) is a stylish, enchanting one bedroom, one bath in-law apartment on the first floor of our mid-century home. Perched in the trees of the Oakland Hills, yet only minutes from San Francisco.

A bit magical, and profoundly comfortable, El Nido is a great home base for sightseeing or a spot to retreat, reflect and create, a soft place to fall — or maybe find your wings?

Read a below for all Nido has to offer (and what it does not!).

The space
El Nido is a 800+ square feet in-law apartment with its own private entrance on the lower floor of our mid-century home. It features it's own private deck, floor to ceiling windows, hardwood floors, an eclectic mix of modern and vintage furnishings and original artwork with an international flair.

Features include:

• light-filled master suite with queen-sized platform bed and view of the woods

• large, living room with floor to ceiling windows that open onto private deck.

• queen size air mattress.

• stacks of art and design books, Oakland Magazine, local musuem guides.

• stocked kitchenette with small refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, dishes

• private redwood deck under canopy of fragrant cedar and oak trees.

• TV with Netflix, Comcast Preferred Plus (HBO, Startz)

• Large desk and business amenities, including WiFi, 33" monitor, printer, scanner, and office supplies

We encourage you to open to the peace, quiet and natural beauty El Nido has to offer while here — strum our guitar, write a poem, sing a song, tell a story! If you love travel and life's simple pleasures, you're going to love it here! (If you prefer for a modern, corporate more generic atmosphere this is probably not a fit!) While at El Nido you may want to enjoy:

• Morning local roastery coffee in bed with the Sunday Times.

• A free yoga class at our local yoga studio in nearby Montclair Village.

• Sight-seeing in the world's favorite city, San Francisco (we can help with tips!)

• Exploring Oakland, now one of the country's most burgeoning cities, renowned for innovative restaurants, hip bars and slamming comedy clubs.

• A glass of chilled Napa Valley wine on the deck at sunset.

• A hot bath before falling asleep to the sound of crickets.

Guest access
El Nido has its own entrance and is your own private oasis for the duration of your stay. We do our best to provide laundry facilities upon request. For those doing business during their stay, a large desk, office supplies and, of course, WiFi are all provided.

Please note there is no accessible yard space.

Other things to note
This rental is not suitable for small children or anyone with balance or ambulatory issues as it is situated at the bottom of a long flight of somewhat rustic outdoor steps. High heels discouraged!

The kitchenette is an area to make a cup of coffee or tea, heat something up in the microwave or pop something in the toaster oven. It is NOT set-up for cooking a meal.

There is no yard access.

We live upstairs and are early risers. We are considerate of those who may be sleeping below (no coffee grinder, blender, flushing toilets, etc.) however if you are an exceptionally light sleeper this may not be the place for you. We also have two new kitties that can get a little rambunctious — occasional thundering paws across the hardwood floors!

Location

Oakland, California, United States

Montclair is a lush, wooded neighborhood in the Oakland Hills, about 17 miles from San Francisco and 10-15 minutes by car to most popular Oakland/Berkeley neighborhoods. It is nestled at the intersection of three canyons and borders several regional parks with literally hundreds of miles of hiking and bicycling trails.

Montclair Village is a 5 minute drive (or a really nice 30-minute walk along a old railroad trail) away, where you can find excellent restaurants, shopping and Mountain Yoga, the yoga studio we own (free class for all guests!).

Our guest guide is full of little-known finds and personal recommendations for places truly "Oaklandish."

My husband Lalo and I are both "cats with nine lives". I am a former vocalist who now owns a nearby yoga studio (and specializes in yogic sound practices.) Lalo is a Facilities Director with an MFA in Sculpture. Between the two of us we have had substantial lives in dance, music, political theater, instrument making, visual arts, yoga, arts administration, marketing & public relations, and I can't even remember what else. I travel extensively — including taking groups of yoga students on international trips  (India, Mexico, Morocco, Italy, Cuba, Japan) — and view travel as a form of yoga, a transformative experience. I like to use Airbnb when I travel, and choose my rentals as much for the owners as I do for the spaces. I love to meet interesting people, and delight in sharing with others those things I feel make life rich and beautiful. My life motto? Have mercy.
