ABOUT THE HOST
Gabriel’s goal is to make sure that you have an awesome experience in Rio and can focus on the important stuff, like your vacation - not worry about accommodation!
He will normally be around most days and very happy to give you advice and suggestions for getting around Rio and places to visit. Occasionally he has given guests short tours of Rio, but this is not a standard part of the package because of time constraints.
Born and raised at Leme neighborhood in Rio, the mystique of the Chapeu Mangueira’s Favela and the beauty of its people were always present in his life and imagination. As an adult he had the opportunity to work three years with children and families as a psychologist for a local organization called “Casa da Árvore”. As a result, he became completely involved with Chapéu Mangueira and decided to move from his comfortable apartment in Ipanema to live in the community. Always proud of this neighborhood, it is common to see him walking around with friends and relatives showing them the hospitality of local people, the delights of local cuisine, the trails and the panoramic views of the ocean and the rainforest. Working now at Abraço Carioca- Favela Hostel, his passionate and respectful relationship with Chapéu Mangueira has grown even more. His main target is to show our guests the authentic Carioca lifestyle through an unforgettable experience.
He’s proud of making the best Caipirinha in Town, come and judge for yourself.
Compared to other favelas from Rio, Chapéu Mangueira is the smallest favela in the south zone of the city (most touristic neighborhood) and has been pacified since 2008 by the government. So for the last 5 years it's been a really calm and peaceful place even safer than some of Rio's most touristic areas. Unlike other parts of the city, you'll feel a real sense of community in the favelas, where everyone looks out for their neighbors.
MEET & GREET
Normally, we can come to the meeting point located at David’s Bar (very well-known restaurant in the community) and walk you to the Hostel. Let me know beforehand.

I had an amazing stay here. Gabriel was attentive leading up to my arrival from the airport, and had one of his team meet me at the local bar at 10pm when I arrived. It's an authentic favela experience, complete with sore calves the second day of walking up all 200-odd stairs! The view from the kitchen/balcony is awesome and everyone is really friendly. I felt at home after just a few hours.
I had a very great experience in the hostel. In fact it exceeded my expectations. This was my first time traveling solo to another country where I do not know a single soul! I never been one to care much about 5 star hotels. So I felt if I was going to Brazil, I might as well see how REAL Brazillians live. The host, Gaga is a very welcoming, passionate, and caring host. He took the time to explain the major touristic attractions of the city. It helped that he spoke English because I did not know a lick of Portuguese. The hostel is located in a safe favela not too far from the beach. It is walking distance from a couple of great restaurants that offer you the authentic "Brazilian" dish. I had lunch with Gaga my first day at Bar do David and it was delicious. One of the things I loved about the hostel was the view that I would wake up to everyday, waking up to the sun rising over the beach each morning was priceless!! I also enjoyed how everyone acted like a family. Typical mornings consisted of everyone relaxing on the roof top having great conversations, joking, listening to music, etc. Everyone on his team was friendly and were always in good spirits. Another good thing was there was never a problem with WiFi. So if you need Internet access that is always a plus. Next time I come to Rio I will definately stay in Gaga's hostel!! Forget every other listing if you are coming to Rio please choose this one,you will NOT regret it!!!! Muito obrigado Brasil !!!! Chow!!
Amazing!! For everybody who is looking for a unique experience and wants to connect to the 'real Brazil'. You feel like being part of a family rather than just staying in a hostel. It's the little diamonds that you find along the way while you are traveling. I simply loved it.
Gabriel was great! Very friendly and helpful. Gave us great suggestions, directions, explanations for everything we wanted to do in Rio. The space is fantastic, with an incredible view of the beach and only a few minutes from everything you need. I would recommend Abraco Carioca to anyone.
I had an amazing time at gagas hostel. The View from the top is simple amazing. Lying on the hammock after a long day is just perfect. Travelling alone I felt safe in the favelas. Gaga was just too kind, made me feel welcome, showed me around some of the hidden gems of rio, made my experience so much better. The hostel is up several stairs but totally worth the climb. Location is great, close to buses n several eateries , supermarkets and of course the beach.
The stay was great! Beautiful view, we felt very safe and Gabriel took us on a tour around the city - fantastic!
The view at Abraço Carioca is absolutely incredible! The dorms are nice and clean and the community it's situated in is full of warm and very friendly people. I will definitely be visiting again next time I'm in Rio. Unfortunately Gabriel wasn't feeling very well during my stay so we didn't get to know each other well.

About the Host, Gabriel
