We rented this house from June 13 to June 20. We were 15 family members, 8 of whom were from California. Our hosts were present when we arrived. They were pleasant and showed us around before they left. In general, the location, the living space and the quiet should have given us a pleasant family retreat. However, there were a number drawbacks that spoiled our enjoyment of the house and its surroundings.
There were several things not working such as the ice maker in the refrigerator, a trash compactor which they advised wasn't used, all but one of the televisions, which itself was "iffy". Shortly after the hosts left, the air conditioning appeared to stop working and the house quickly grew uncomfortable. Our son turned it off and on again which seemed to fix the problem initially, although throughout our time there we found the house way too cold in some rooms and way to warm in others. Neither of the 2 overhead fans in the entry room responded to any switches we could find. When we called the hosts, they advised that one would work if we threw a breaker switch.
The first morning we found that the cooktop didn't work due to an empty propane tank. The hosts brought over a new tank by mid-afternoon. Subsequently, the right front burner would not ignite. While they were there we asked for some hand towels and wash clothes, a few of which were provided, but not nearly enough. Many of the bedrooms had no shades or curtains to keep out the morning light. We found mouse droppings and traps in the cabinet under the cooktop. Roaches were killed in various rooms. The black mold and uncleanliness of the downstairs refrigerator was overwhelming and prevented its use. The smell of mildew throughout the lower level was very unpleasant.
The house was not clean. When we wiped up an occasional spill from the floor, we were astounded at the dirt that came up on the paper towels. While the dining room table was big enough to accommodate us all, the chairs continually shed their leather(?) as we sat on them, apparently from age and neglect. The swing out on the dock broke while our 14-year old grandson was using it. The chain was completely rusted through. The outdoor eating area must not have been used for years. There was an accumulation of dirt on everything and cupboards were thick with cobwebs. The available elevator broke when the power cord disconnected from its source. We reported this to the hosts.
Our hosts mentioned when we arrived that we were their first renters and that they had not lived in the house for 2 years. It clearly suffers from neglect and non-use. While we are a family that enjoys each other and we loved all being in the same house together, we agreed that the value delivered did not come close to justifying the price paid. We believe some reimbursement is due us.
I was very disappointed by this review. In my last conversation with the renter she enthusiastically declared, "We are having a blast!"
I have a gorgeous home, but it is not a 5-Star resort with a staff. This was a guest who was trying to house a large group, with people coming and going throughout the week, who had unrealistic expectations. I received many calls from her and we responded immediately and did our best to alleviate her concerns, even though it meant us driving nearly 2.5 hours to get there to address her queries. An example was a complaint we received that the hot water was not working. Upon inspection we found that her guest had turned the faucet in the wrong direction. Her husband also called to ask about things we had already discussed.
I was shocked that she complained about the downstairs refrigerator. That appliance was not plugged in and was not intended for their use. As for the upstairs refrigerator she called to say it wasn't cooling. It was fine. She had filled the appliance with room temperature food brought to the beach and had it so full that the air couldn't circulate. As for the ice maker, we had purchased ice the morning they arrived so it was well stocked with fresh ice.
As with any home there are things that need maintenance. We had explained that the trash compactor, wasn't functional, but it is not listed as an amenity.
Regarding towels, I didn't have many to give them when they asked because all of the bathrooms had been stocked with fresh towels for their arrival.
This large group assumed the use of things that were personal possessions, and not intended for their use. They forced their way into locked areas . They broke our elevator.
The house is on a marsh and a deep water creek in the South. We do have insects; it is a well known battle in the South. It is a sandy property. The house had been thoroughly cleaned the weekend before they arrived, including steam cleaning the floors. I cannot explain the dirt inside unless it is from the large number of people who were living in the house that week.
They complained about the air conditioning. It was in the high 90's and the house is on 4 levels. There will be a variation in temperature.
