Our stay at Villas Nicolas (unit 12 upper) was wonderful. The unit was immaculate - yes, there were a few ants and some adorable tiny geckos - but that's to be expected when your're essentially staying in the jungle! We overheard several visitors say that they had been back year after year, and I can definitely see why. We will be back as well!
My husband and I had a wonderful time at Sheryl's place in Manuel Antonio! It was our favorite part of our honeymoon! The condo itself is just perfect, and we loved being able to use the amenities at Villas Nicholas as well! It's in a great location and Sheryl and the staff were very helpful in planning our trip. We visited the beaches within Manuel Antonio National Park (get there early to avoid an hour long wait to enter the park!), the public beach at Manuel Antonio (we rented 2 chairs and an umbrella for 10 bucks for the entire day- totally worth it), and Playa Biezanz ( get to this "hidden" beach by walking down a dirt path that begins a small distance after passing the Shana Hotel). Everything was in walking distance (albeit a very hilly walking distance ) from the condo. We truly had an amazing experience! Highly recommended!
We loved our stay at Villa Nicolas! The staff was so friendly, and it was great having our own apartment. We picked up food and cooked all our own meals which made us feel like home. The pool is beautiful and tropical, and while we didn't eat at the restaurant we did order chips & guac which were delicious. Highly recommended!
Great condo, exactly as pictured, lovely view and jungle setting, monkeys, toucans and sloths in the trees right off the porch!
So let me start by saying Manual Antonio National Park is a one of a kind, beautiful nature park. These villas, part of the Villas Nicolas complex are pretty well located, within close driving distance to the park.
The Villa itself was quite good. Great view of the ocean, and wildlife (saw toucans, monkeys, various birds from the balcony). The bed was comfortable and the room was air conditioned, which we appreciated. We did see a few cockroaches, but keep in mind, this place is literally in the rainforest. I was surprised by how little insects bothered us.
The breakfast was good, but could have been bigger. We left feeling still hungry. We didn't have a chance to dine in the restaurant further, as they have a limited vegetarian selection. The (email hidden) were good, and all staff was friendly.
Upon talking with Sheryl, she recommended we walk down to the beach and take the bus back up. DO NOT DO THIS. The walk down (which she claimed was 15 min) is really around 30-40 min (~3km), with no sidewalk and steep declines. We were miserable and hot by the time we got to the park entrance. She also recommended we don't take any cameras with us. When we got to the park, everyone had bags and cameras. We took our stuff with us the next day and it was fine, we didn't feel unsafe in the park, but YMMV.
1. The bus picks up and drops off from the hotel next door (Si Como No). Take it, it's cheap and efficient. Don't walk down to the beach yourself.
2. The park is beautiful, but be prepared to walk. From the park entrance, it's a 15-20 min walk through the rainforest (beautiful walk) to get to the beach.
3. The food situation in MA kind of sucks in my opinion. Hard to get good local or cheap food. There is a small grocery within walking distance, and a larger one a short drive down the road. You may also try your luck in Quepos.
4. There is a public beach before the national park. It's nice, but was VERY crowded and I wouldn't feel safe leaving my belongings there.
5. If you're renting a car, make sure it's a 4x4 (general costa rica advice). I'd still recommend taking the bus to the park, it's very low hassle.
All in all, we liked the room and the location. If we visit again, we'd consider staying at Villa Nicolas.
For Clarification: the downhill walk to Espadilla Beach is 15 -20 minutes max. This is a free beach, very long and hardly packed especially after Easter.. I am considerably older than these guests and I can do it in 15 minutes. The beach area closest to the restaurants & water activity rental kiosks attracts the most people. If you want privacy, all one has to do is walk approx 5-10 minutes in the opposite direction and this same beach is almost pristine.
The entrance to the National Park is on the flat and is an approx 10 minute max walk from Espadilla Beach.
I advised that if they wanted to swim together that they not bring anything valuable ( ie cameras, passports etc) and leave them on the beach because of potential petty theft issues.
Unless you are going off road a 4x4 is not necessary here. The new highway from San Jose to Manuel Antonio is better than some in the U.S.
There are a few youth hostels a 15 minute walk from us and there are now no less than 7 reasonably priced restaurants catering to them and us . Food options range from Falaffel to Asian, to Costa Rican tipico, Fish & chips (website hidden): Bugs: Cockroaches, like geckos, are indigenous to Costa Rica (in Florida they are called Palmetto bugs)Finding one in NYC is one thing ,finding them here is to be expected from time to time ..they fly. We endeavor to make sure that our units are as bug free as possible however the word "jungle" is the operative word here
We had a wonderful stay at this condo in the Villas Nicolas complex. The rooms were very clean and the large deck off our condo was great for checking out all of the wildlife! It was the perfect spot to rest and relax and the staff whom worked at the hotel were able to help us with any questions we had about the area, transportation and activities - Julio, thank you for all of your help during our stay.
If you don't feel like using the kitchen in the condo, there are many great restaurants in the area. Milagro was one of our favourites for the delicious food and coffee. There is also a public bus that will get you to the beach and Quepos no problem. I definitely recommend this condo!
