Interaction with Guests
I check in with my guests after arrival, allowing them to get settled. You are provided with a door combination for ease of arriving on your own schedule. It seems texting is becoming the best way to communicate - with at least one introductory meeting to shake hands. Tight schedules and early morning departures often make it difficult to meet up, but taking walks on local hikes together and a sharing a dinner out have been known to happen.
Walking distance to everything. Just 2 blocks north of downtown. Quiet street.
Most you can access on foot. Tourism and local buses a few short blocks away. Close to restaurants and tourism activities - the downtown dock within 5 minutes walks. Local hiking trails 5 minutes the other direction!
Other Things to Note
We've got the best health food store, Rainbow Foods, located less than 2 blocks away. They have anything you might need and serve a great organic buffet lunch.
Joannie was a great host, messaged us multiple times before our stay to make sure everything was set up, gave us tips on things to do while in Juneau. Joannie made it a point to meet us at one point during the week when we were finally around.
The cottage was within walking distance of downtown. The neighborhood wasn't the best, but we never had any problems. Heavily traveled road by pedestrians. Parking on street, luckily we got a spot each day right in front. The cottage had everything we were looking for, including seasonings in the kitchen.
Overall I'd give it a 8+
Joanie was a very friendly and helpful host and the cottage was great. Clean, comfortable, and a perfect location. Close to everything downtown but still quiet and relaxing.
We stayed in Joanies little Stone Throw Cottage for three nights and were very happy with the accommodation. The kitchen is very well equipped with a full fridge and all sorts of cooking utensils as well as some kitchen staples - perfect to prepare your own meals. The design of the rental is rather old school but that was perfectly fine with us. It is a very comfortable place, perfect for two people and equipped with everything you need. Joanie was a great host and checked in with us to make sure we have a got everything we need. The best part about this place is the location. It is in the heart of downtown Juneau not even 3 min away from coffee shops and restaurants and about a 15 min car ride to Mendenhall Valley and Glacier. I would recommend staying at Joanies cottage and stay with her again any time!
This lovely cottage has 'location +++' factor. Joanie was available from almost them moment we arrived with a most warm welcome. She suggested walks, restaurants, cafes, places of interest and possible tours. She didn't have the most up to date information on bike hire, but we had it within hours and I am sure that would be the case with any information you may ask from her If your looking for upmarket, sterile accommodation, this is not it. If you want homely, preloved furniture, everything you could possible need in the kitchen complete with selection of spices (not that I was keen on cooking), good hot shower, fluffy towels and comfy bed, look no further. She made sure there was milk, coffee and tea, some fruit/bars and butter on hand to get you started. A fantastic health food shop with almost everything you may need is around the corner. The bus from airport drops you off on fourth street not further than 100 metres ($4 compared to $30 for taxi and you get to see more and meet locals). Downtown Juneau within 400 metres but the neighbourhood is definitely quiet suburbia. There are at least three smaller hikes that start within a few small blocks away and I recommend you do at least one, Joanie will be happy to recommend which will be suitable if you let her know your level of fitness. Fish and chips down on the docks out of the caravan was fab. Halibut fish and sweet potato fries just yummy. Rookery café best coffee and good wholesome simple food. Red Dog Saloon worth a visit for its entertainment value and fun. We cant speak highly enough of Joanie and the service she provides as host. A big hug and thankyou from two Aussies.....tony and elsjexx
What a great neighborhood. A great location and a great house. It had everything I was looking for. Close to hiking trails, close to downtown and a great house.
Exceptional experience from start to finish!! Communication with Joanie was prompt & thorough. She was a very welcoming host, providing many extras in the cottage that made it so comfortable. It genuinely seemed like Joanie wanted you to enjoy your stay at the cottage and in Juneau. The description of this cosy cottage is accurate. The bed is very comfortable; there's a well-stocked kitchen, plenty of towels and pillows. Joanie even provides a dehumidifier to ensure that the interior environment is super-comfortable in Juneau's wet climate. The location is fabulous -- quiet, just barely removed from the hustle-bustle of the downtown tourist area, and easy to access fabulous scenic walks! I recommend highly, and would stay here again without hesitation. Joanie and her Stone's Throw Cottage added to a wonderful experience in Juneau!
Located almost in the heart of downtown Juneau, most everything there is within a 10 minute walking distance from the cottage. This place is definitely comfortable and recommended and you have some great food just a couple of blocks away (The Rookery, and Salt). Joanie was great about checking in to see if anything was needed or if I had any questions.

About the Host, Joanie
Artist, traveler, long-time Alaskan, and great risk- taker. My home is in the little remote town of Gustavus, but I moved into the "big city" of Juneau to take a job. I tell folks "I'm 'In Town' for a decade". So, I've fixed up the Gustavus Getaway, and hired Lori as Manager to share my Gustavus cottage with visitors during the summer months. I bought a place in Juneau, along with the adjacent home, built in 1910, with the intent of renovating them for the fun of it. With the vision of putting a roof-garden on top of the cottage right in the middle of downtown Juneau (stay tuned!)!, the renovation project seems to have taken on a life of its own - resulting in the Stone's Throw Cottage. The two cottages are just asking for an adventure package to link them together via a 20-minute plane ride or a 4-hour ferry ride; still working on that. Thus far I have only met wonderful people who have appreciated the two places separately - and I have appreciated hearing about and being a part of their traveling adventures.
