The Space

Enjoy nearly 60 private acres with over 1/2 mile of private river frontage!

In honor of Thoreau’s influence on society and conservation, we’ve transformed what was originally built as the estate’s “summer kitchen” in the late 1800’s/ early 1900’s into a quaint one room cabin. This cabin has hosted many a wild game roast along with nights of wine, laughter, song and philosophizing. This cabin harkens back to days of old with a craftsman handmade stone fireplace which was fashioned from river rock harvested on the property. The main room has a cozy sitting area with two Adirondack Chairs and a loveseat. There is also a kitchenette and kitchen table with chairs. The additional Adirondack chairs outside the front door are a favorite spot to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee.

For sleeping quarters, there is a cozy loft where you can enjoy the view of the fireplace while drifting softly to sleep in the fresh country air.

Sit calmly while surrounded by the wilderness and imagine your friend Henry David Thoreau by your side whence you pick-up a livre and enjoy the crackle of an evening fire.

Please note: Full bathroom is detached & shared with one other small cabin. This is a “rustic cabin” which has electricity, but no running water. Guests are provided water for drinking, dishes, etc.

We offer four cozy cabins located on a private riverfront estate of nearly 60 private acres in the Tug Hill Region of Central New York.

Cabin rentals offered nightly, weekly and monthly. Many area activities including fishing, swimming, tubing, hiking, bird watching, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and much more.

Close & convenient access to Sylvan Beach, Oneida Lake, Camden, Blossvale, Rome, Utica & Syracuse areas.

PLEASE NOTE: Taxes not included in airbnb fee & are due upon check-in.
(2% Occupancy Tax, 8.75% Sales Tax). Friendly dogs are allowed with prior approval and an additional pet fee of $15/nt. will be due upon check-in. A maximum pet fee of $45 for guests booking 4 nights or more.

  • The word idyllic is the only word I can use to describe this place. It was everything we hoped for and then some. We were well taken care of from the moment of arrival. We look forward to returning and enjoying all of the offerings of this place, season by season.

  • I can't say enough good things about Wellneste Lodge. The pictures don't do the grounds justice---it is truly a beautiful, magical place. Thoreau's Cabin was as cozy as could be. My husband and I and our two year old spent two restful nights there. We wished we could have had more time to explore and just play outside. It's a great place for kids to burn off steam. Our host Karen was extremely friendly and made us feel right at home. We will definitely be back!

  • I hope I can visit this place again some day. The site is wonderful, close to the river and the woods, but very well maintained, so you feel very safe and taken care of. The cabin was perfect. We could not have asked for more. I only wish we could have stayed longer... Very friendly and hospitable hosts, who made us feel very welcome. Thank you!

  • My husband and I stayed the week with our 2 doggies. We all had a great time at Thoreau's Cozy Cabin and Wellnesste. We were shown such wonderful hospitality by the entire family. The cabin was indeed cozy and 100% satisfactory: clean, well-maintained, charming. Relaxation was found both indoors and out. The property was peaceful, making it the perfect place for a summer retreat. We enjoyed reading and sunning by the river, making bonfires, smores, and lemonade, and walking through the gardens and trails. It's so rare that our dogs get to enjoy a vacation off-leash - THANK YOU :) They were in vacation heaven and wish all vacations could be that fun! Hope to return soon!

  • The place is amazing.
Wellnesste Lodge actually owns a big property in the middle of the woods and near a river. The cabins are really charming and the property is beautiful. We just stayed for one night but I would strongly recommand to stay longer. You can have a small walk in the woods and rest in front of the pond or the river in nice wooden chairs for as long as you like. It's really relaxing.
Also you have your own cabin, therfore you are really on your own even though the hosts live right nearby. The hosts including the daughter who actually showed us the cabin and everything we needed to know are really welcoming.
We would definitely recommend this place.

  • My boyfriend and I planned a romantic weekend getaway at the Wellnesste Lodge. It was so incredibly peaceful and calming and exactly what we needed to get away from the hussle and bussle of our crazy lives. The hosts are extremely welcoming and friendly. We will most definitely be coming back to stay again soon.

  • For our fist holiday spent away from family, we could not have asked for a cozier rustic cabin. This is the perfect place to be snowed in (although the anomalous weather did not cooperate for our stay) I imagine this little gem provides many varied authentic experiences throughout the changing seasons. Thank you!

  • We had a great time at Thoreau's cabin. The whole property is so beautiful, the family is just the best, so pleasant and nice. Amazing host. We'd love to go back sometime soon... and my kids are already asking when are we going back. Next time we want to be able to do tubbing in the river, as it was a bit cold to do that this time. However, we enjoyed a picnic by the river and a nice fire with marshmallow. We'd strongly recommend this place :-)

  • Wellnesste was a great escape from the city for us. Completely relaxing environment with the possibility to do as much or as little as you wanted. We spent most of our trip in the river or wandering the property. And our dog probably enjoyed the trip more than we did! These guys were great hosts! Looking forward to heading back there in the near future.

About
We're a family of 4 who like living in the peace & quiet of the Central NY countryside. We love having kind, fun, interesting people come out for a visit and enjoy the outdoors in our cabins. We've been lucky enough to host wonderful human beings from around the world (France, New Zealand, Germany, England, Ireland, etc.) and around the states (too many to list). We hope that you'll consider coming out for a visit to enjoy all of the natural beauty that upstate New York (CNY/Adirondacks) has to offer. Peace, Christophe-Karen-Meghan-Sophie
