ABOUT THE HOST
Gabriel’s goal is to make sure that you have an awesome experience in Rio and can focus on the important stuff, like your vacation - not worry about accommodation!
He will normally be around most days and very happy to give you advice and suggestions for getting around Rio and places to visit. Occasionally he has given guests short tours of Rio, but this is not a standard part of the package because of time constraints.
Born and raised at Leme neighborhood in Rio, the mystique of the Chapeu Mangueira’s Favela and the beauty of its people were always present in his life and imagination. As an adult he had the opportunity to work three years with children and families as a psychologist for a local organization called “Casa da Árvore”. As a result, he became completely involved with Chapéu Mangueira and decided to move from his comfortable apartment in Ipanema to live in the community. Always proud of this neighborhood, it is common to see him walking around with friends and relatives showing them the hospitality of local people, the delights of local cuisine, the trails and the panoramic views of the ocean and the rainforest. Working now at Abraço Carioca- Favela Hostel, his passionate and respectful relationship with Chapéu Mangueira has grown even more. His main target is to show our guests the authentic Carioca lifestyle through an unforgettable experience.
He’s proud of making the best Caipirinha in Town, come and judge for yourself
Compared to other favelas from Rio, Chapéu Mangueira is the smallest favela in the south zone of the city (most touristic neighborhood) and has been pacified since 2008 by the government. So for the last 5 years it's been a really calm and peaceful place even safer than some of Rio's most touristic areas. Unlike other parts of the city, you'll feel a real sense of community in the favelas, where everyone looks out for their neighbors.
MEET & GREET
Normally, we can come to the meeting point located at David’s Bar (very well-known restaurant in the community) and walk you to the Hostel. Let me know beforehand.
we know that when I travel, internet is not a luxury, it's a necessity - that's why my WiFi internet is 100% free – no extra or hidden fees.
You're welcome to wash your own clothes for R$10 reais.

This hostel gave me one experience so different with the help of Gabriel. The hostel in the heart of one Favela and have a good view of Copacabana. Gabriel, he is a so nice and kind guy that I appreciate a lot!
Lida and Andreas are two big and fantastic human beings. The prepared breakfast for all guests for pure generosity and will to be together. I learned about Colombia and its peculiarities, as well as about life, that is capable of giving us the gift to introduce in our lives such incredible people…that make us become better. They tried other hostel in another neighborhood of Rio, but our marriage was so genuine that they decided to come back for the home Abraço. For sure, left a friend here! And dears, we will see each other soon!
Our stay at Abraco Carioca was a great experience. The view from the rooftop and the room was really breathtaking (as seen on the picture). Gabriel put a lot of effort in helping his guests. He made a tour through Rocinha with us, helped with booking bus tickets and even called hostels in our next destination for us. What's different from other hostels is, that there is no permanent reception, which would be helpfull sometimes.
Gabriel is a dude. Very humble, gentle and cool guy. It looks exactly like the listing but neighborhood is even more awesome. It is one of the best place in Rio to stay, walking place to Copacabana & well connected to other parts of Rio by bus and metro. Terrace is the best part of his listing, loved to spent time having coffee and sitting up there. Other guests were also comfortable.
Two nights were enough to leave an impression of tranquility and refinement in the air. Thanks man. It’s always a privilege to have guests from countries that I’m not used to and be able to immerse myself, even just for a moment, on the spices of India. Big hug from your friend here from Rio.
Forte abraço do amigo aqui do Rio."

About the Host, Gabriel
