Extra spacious

Guests love this home’s spaciousness for a comfortable stay.
Both rustic and elegant, the Birch Ledge Guest House offers a cozy place to relax and recharge, whatever the season.

The first floor features a spacious living room (with queen sized pull-out-couch), dining area, and small kitchen. The bathroom has a walk-in shower. The second floor is a loft accessible by a spiral staircase and has a comfy queen and two twin sized beds.

The guesthouse is surrounded by quiet forest and is an easy 30 minute drive to Portland.

The space
Sari and Saul Lindauer, both retired science teachers, live on the property in a separate home, and have been building and improving upon this guest house for the past 24 years. The Lindauers welcome guests to Birch Ledge as a way to share the beauty of their homestead with others.

LEDGES TRAIL UPGRADE 2025
The trail starts at the gap in the stone wall as you near the chicken yard and is marked by blue flags. This one mile walk passes a seasonal stream, lowland and upland forests and passes through a second growth young forest scattered with sweet fern and wild blueberries, (ripe in July). Old stone walls traverse the trail and an old stone cellar hole is along the way. A thick hemlock grove surrounds the last uphill stretch which opens up to a ledge outcrop with stunning views west including, weather permitting, a distant glimpse of Mt Washington and the Presidential Range 70 miles away in New Hampshire.
The one mile return retraces route and as you descend the final hill, a large glacial Erratic will be to the left and a short loop trail allows for easy access.

The trail is accessible all 4 seasons and if there is snow, snowshoes are available to borrow.

Guest access
The road access to the guesthouse goes through, past the back of the building, for easy exiting.

Guests can park near the walkway anywhere on the road. No other cars will need to use the road while you are there.
The guesthouse is accessed by a stone walkway that curves around to the front porch entry. The first floor and loft, arranged as one large open space, are all for guest use. There is a key provided handing inside the door, but the guesthouse will be open for your arrival. Just go in and make yourselves at home.

Other things to note
There's nothing like fresh eggs for breakfast...feel free to say hello to our chickens in our free range coop, and pick up some eggs. In the warmer months, you are welcome to pick your own fresh herbs from our garden. If you have a car to carry them, you can also borrow our two canoes or kayaks and visit one of the many nearby rivers or lakes. There is also a working pizza oven available in the summer. If you are looking for a more relaxed stay, pull a chair out onto the lawn or enjoy one of the two private decks attached to the guest house. There are also a couple of chaise lounge chairs to watch the beehives

We provide you with a coffee maker and tea kettle as well as ground coffee and tea. In the fridge you'll find eggs, bread, milk, orange juice, butter and homemade jam.

There is wifi and cell service.

The first floor is wheelchair accessible!

**Please let us know ahead of time if you plan on using the pull-out bed on the first floor---we'll make sure it is made for you before you arrive!**

Favorite song in high school: Change is Going to Come-Sam Cooke
I am a retired Science teacher having taught at Breakwater School in Portland for 34 years. I am also an artist who finds inspiration through meditation and observing the beauty of the natural world. Some call my art colorist as I am drawn to bright colors. I continue to explore various media, silk scarf batik, weaving and pottery to name a few, while paint and canvas have drawn me as of late. Shinrin Yoku is the name of a Japanese mental health therapy (translation: "Forest Bathing") that has become more known in the US in recent years and I think it is wonderful that it is gaining interest and use here. I strongly believe that we will all be healthier and happier getting out and exploring the natural world. I spent my entire career getting children outdoors and feeling at home in their environment; developing a relationship with it and loving it. I love meeting people from all over the world and appreciate different cultures. I also enjoy sharing our beautiful spaces at Birch Ledge, both outside and in.
