Stay in the Heart of NYC! Less than a 15 minute walk to Times Square, you'll be staying in one of the hippest neighborhoods in Madhattan - Hell's Kitchen!! Come relax in your fully private room. Enjoy lightning fast internet, cable TV, & much more...

The Space

Your Fully Private Room has a comfortable queen size loft bed with a double sided pillow-top mattress. It also includes:

* WiFi (super fast!)
* Cable TV (Time Warner Cable w/HBO)
* DVD/CD/VCR player
* Mini-Fridge
* Air Conditioning / Heat
* Clean sheets, towels, washcloths, pillows, & blankets
* NYC Guidebooks, Maps, & a local ' Native New Yorker's '
knowledge of things to do 'off-the-beaten-path'!!

Most of my visitors are either couples, family, or good friends who don't mind sharing the bed together. However, I do have a full-size Aerobed air mattress which sleeps one or two quite comfortably.

If I'm home I'll let you use my cell phone for local & domestic (within the USA) calls. I have an extra AT&T Nokia 2320 cell phone that you can borrow for your stay. All you need to do is buy a SIM card for it (around $20 US).

I'm an Avid Cyclist & you could rent any of my four bicycles for $20 a day (cheaper than renting them from any bike shop). I have helmets and bike locks too. I like showing my guests around the city by bike. If you're interested, let me know! I LOVE hosting & meeting new people & if I have the time I'll show you around my neighborhood - just ask! I've had some really fun experiences with my former guests!!

You'll have closet space w/hangars & three drawers in my dresser for your clothing, as well as a empty drawer in the WC for your toiletries. I have many shampoos, conditioners, & other assorted toiletries which you are welcome to use, as well as laundry detergent.

I'm on the top 5th floor of a 5-story brownstone walk-up. THERE IS NO ELEVATOR.

My kitchen/living room is available for your use, except for the late evening when I'll be sleeping. In addition to a 4-burner gas stove-top, oven and broiler, I have a rice cooker, George Foreman grill, toaster oven, blender, and most other kitchen appliances you'd find in a fully stocked kitchen. Just please clean up after yourselves!

I provide clean sheets, blankets, pillows, & towels, and have other assorted toiletries that you can use, including an iron & hairdryer. My place is clean - no bedbugs here! I'm a non-smoker and Don't Allow Smoking In My Apartment, or Anywhere Else In The Building. If you are a smoker & feel the need to burn you must go downstairs & outside the building, but then you'll have to climb back up 5 flights of stairs [maybe this will help deter you?] : )

As a native New Yorker who has been under-employed for sometime, I know how to live cheaply & still enjoy what this great city offers. My girlfriend Natalia & I recently run THRIFTAHOLICS com . Check it out, as we have lots of info on how to do things cheaply in the Big Apple! For example, we can get you into FREE pre-release film screenings and tell you how to visit most NYC museums for free or almost nothing - and that's just for starters!!

I'm also a big BROADWAY buff. I see nearly every show that comes to NY. This could be a Very Expensive Hobby, but as I'm a New Yorker who comes from a theatre background, I have connections and can get tickets to most performances a LOT CHEAPER than they are at the box office or even online. If you wanna see a show or two during your visit (and I wholeheartedly recommend you do so), let me know and I'll try and work my magic for you!

As for me, I'll be sleeping in the living room on the queen size Murphy Wall Bed.

Like to play tennis? I have several racquets you can use, and can tell you where the only FREE tennis courts are in Manhattan to play on! Hell, maybe I'll even come play a few sets with you!!

Got stinky drawers? Well, wash 'em then! I have detergent & fabric softener you can use. A cheap & reliable Coin-Operated Laundromat is right next to my building. You can do it yourself or just drop it off to have it washed (usually done the same day/pay by the pound - or kilo for you krazy Europeans.

Thanks for checking my place out! If you have any questions, shoot me a note via Airbnb.

I'm looking forward to meeting you!!

Guest Access

NOTHING is off-limits at my flat -- My place is Your Place! : ) You can use my kitchen, just not at 3am! (you know, during Reasonable hours). You're welcome to use and relax in my front room, unless I'm there working or sleeping.

Interaction with Guests

During your stay you can be as private as you want, or come and socialize a bit with me : ) I like to show my guests around my neighborhood and, if they like, go out for a drink or two. I'm also an avid cyclist, and could possibly take you on a tour of Central Park (I have 4 bikes in the basement we can use). I'll be sleeping in the front room most nights and in and out during the day. If you want some ideas & suggestions on off-the-beaten-track stuff that us NYC locals do, just ask!!

The Neighborhood

Bursting with energy and devilish charisma, Hell’s Kitchen continues to evolve as high-rises move in and crooked characters move out. This classic New York City neighborhood is near it all—theaters on Broadway, green lawns in Central Park, and revered mom-and-pop culinary mainstays. (email hidden) haunt, Hell’s Kitchen lives up to its unmistakable mystique.

No visit to the neighborhood is complete without a visit to RUDY's Bar (9th Ave & 45th St) where you MUST order a blonde (or red head if you like them), and eat a few pigs. Just trust me on this... If you wanna nicer place to hang-out at, I recommend the PONY (10th Ave & 45th St). They have the best fried pickles in the city, and some Great selections of Craft beer, some of which are as high as 12% ABV!!

Want some more ideas for restaurants, bars, clubs, and other fun places to visit in the hood? Just ask me!!

Getting around

The nearest subway train is the C/E 8th Avenue Line on west 49th Street and 8th Ave (a 10 minute walk from my Apt). Times Square is also just a 15 minute walk, & most subway lines stop there. Remember that unlike Paris, London, & other international cities, the NYC Subway & Bus System run 24/7! For those of you with money to burn you can always take a taxi, but it'll cost you a pretty penny...

Other Things to Note

Although Hell's Kitchen has a pretty sordid history, it's now one of the hippest neighborhoods in Madhattan! Full of great bars and diverse restaurants that stay open late, just a 15 minute walk to the Theatre District and Times Square, it's a safe, centrally located area where you'll find a lot to do and see for the entire family.

  • Two of us stayed 6 nights in Michael's flat in Hell's Kitchen and we loved it. Flat is in good location, clean, comforable bed, and has all you need for a little visit to New York. Flat is completly full of interesting and quirky things to keep you laughing, anyone else who says otherwise has no sense of humour :) Michael (email hidden): friendly, welcoming, very helpful with suggestions/recommendations/information and great fun, even took us out for a great night on the town drinking and talking til the wee hours of the morning - but also he wasn't always there in your hair and in fact he was away for 3 of the nights giving us full use of the whole flat which was great. Would totally recommed you stay here on your next visit to New York - I hope I can come back some time. Thanks for everything Michael and Natalia.

  • Mike is a fine, conscientious, host. He went to a lot of effort to make my visit easier. Gave me directions, helped me navigate the shows and tickets, loaned me a bicycle helmet, made good recommendations, offered me free reign in the kitchen (although I never used it), was always on time and kept his word. I was a little jumpy about the height of bed and the slightly slippery ladder steps, but was careful and figured out how to get up and down. The apartment is clean but the novelty store humor toys are a little over the top. Regardless, it's a New York experience, and a good one.

    Response from Jon:

    Hi John! Thanks for the nice review : ) I'm not sure what you mean about the ladder to the loft bed being slippery though. I don't find it to be and I've never been told that before, but perhaps I'll add a non-slip matt to the stairs. Sorry also about all my novelty items, as yes, my apt is somewhat of a carny museum. Some folks love 'em & some don't. I've been looking for the 70 year old couple that stayed with me a few years ago and still haven't been able to find them, so I guess that now makes you my oldest official guest, although you look and act much younger than your middle-age year of 71 : )

    Take care John! Hope to see you again in the future!!

  • We (myself and 2 friends) stayed at Michael's for the whole week and
    had a great time! The location is perfect for exploring Manhattan and
    I think it would be very hard to find something with a better
    location/price ratio. The room itself is small (as stated in the
    description) but very clean and smartly arranged, so that even the
    three of us were able to stay there for the whole week. Michael and
    his girlfriend were very friendly and flexible. He daily supplied us
    with useful information about special offers and interesting events in
    the neighborhood, adding to our beautiful NY experience. Thanks for
    everything!

  • I stayed at Michael for 2 nights and it was GREAT. Even before (email hidden), he was of great help, always making sure I find my way around Manhattan in the safest and most convenient way.

    His place is amazing! If you have a sense of humor you will have a great time here. There are small surprises everywhere. I would go into detail, but I'd rather not spoil the fun. You need two extra days only to explore his apartment.

    The room was very clean and had everything I needed and more. From AC, flat screen TV, cable TV, HBO, books...just everything.

    We kept in touch while I was out exploring the city and he gave me tons of useful tips to make the most out of my short stay.

    I couldn't recommend Michael enough! If the place is available I'm definitely staying there on my next visit.

  • My stay at Michael's was great, the apartment has a great location and the decor is amazing, has a variety of fun and surprising objects. Mike was very flexible with me and let me leave my (email hidden) (a safe place) until night because I had a late returning flight. He also gave me several basic tips that helped me. Mike and Natalia made me feel really comfortable on my last day in New York. Thank you very much. :)

  • I stayed with my boyfriend in Michael's house for 4 nights.
    The house is really similar to the photos and it's clean! The bedroom is enough to sleep and to restore the energies to visit this amazing City. The cons are the awkward things in the bedroom, bathroom and the apartment.
    Michael is nice and friendly and respected our space.
    About the neighborhood: we always walked from there to the other places, and during the day and the nigh we felt safe. Although, during the nigh if you’re walking from Times Square zone (really busy with lots of people), from 8th to 9th you will notice a different environment (much less people, almost none tourists).

    Response from Jon:

    Thanks for your kind review Lara. I'm a bit perplexed though about what you wrote about the cons of my apartment being the awkward things I own? What 'awkward things' might you be referring to? Perhaps your opinion on what is awkward differs from mine and the many other guests who have stayed with me before, but, again, it's your opinion. I am a bit eccentric on the various things I collect, which I think makes for a fun krazi collection of assorted nick-nacks that give my place it's definitive flair. But hey, that's just me and my quirky personality : )

    You are correct though in that west of 9th Avenue it's a most Definite change in the neighborhood, as the most tourists conglomerate (and thankfully so!) in and around Times Square, leaving us New Yorkers living in Hell's Kitchen with some sanity ; )

    Twas nice meeting you and your boyfriend. Hope to see you again on your next visit to the Big Apple!

  • This was our first airbnb experience and Michael was as accommodating as can be! His place is a great location, quirky, and clean! Michael was full of knowledge and recomendations of things to do! We can't wait to visit again. Thanks for a super great time Michael!

  • Michael is a friendly, considerate host. The location in Hell's kitchen is ideal to explore Manhattan. It can be easily reached by public transportation, e.g. from JFK. The room was quit and clean, the loft bed comfortable. I felt a home and slept well. Definitively a recommendation. Many thanks again.

About
Hello! I'm Jon. I read an article in the Sunday NY Times travel section called 'Europe Without Hotels' in July 2010. It was there I learned about Airbnb. Till then I'd been an active Couch Surfer, recently being appointed as a City Ambassador for NYC, hosting & traveling with their service since the summer of 2008. I signed up, and have been enjoying traveling with Airbnb ever since. I'm also a RPCV (Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) who served in Morocco as an Environmental Education Specialist and have since been working with the United Nations. I left the organization in 2009 to pursue my dream of opening a Bowling Center & Drive-In Movie Theatre (I'm a USBC League Bowler with a current 190 average). I read, write, speak, & occasionally teach Arabic, and run the largest Arabic Meetup community in the world [NYCALCC com]. I'm honored to be the first non-Moroccan to be named 'Moroccan of the Month' on WAFIN (April, 2006). As a native New Yorker I know how to live cheaply and still enjoy what this great city offers. My girlfriend and I run THRIFTAHOLICS . There you can find info on how to see Broadway & Off-Broadway shows really cheap, how to get in to special pre-release film screenings, and how to visit most NYC museums for almost nothing - and that's just for starters! I'm a seasoned traveler and love meeting new people. I love showing folks around my krazi city! If you're a cyclist, and 'road-savvy', perhaps I can take you on a bike tour of my island : )
