I love the Casa Rara!! It's the best place to stay on Roatan!
The space is very inviting, from the hammocks on the covered porch to the decor. My friend and I loved our lazy mornings, making coffee in the spacious kitchen and lazing around on the hammocks or enjoying the sunset view on top of the torre.
The house conveniently located, within walking distance of the bars, restaurants, and dive centers of West End, but set apart just enough to create your own private retreat. Also, I must say the beds were very comfortable (such soft sheets!).
Tanja, the local property manager, was also incredibly helpful and accessible for any questions we had about the island and the property itself. Desiree was highly responsive and accessible during and after booking, and she gives GREAT deals for RPCVs.
Our stay at La Casa Rara was unique and wonderful. Tanjah (property manager) was on site to explain how everything worked, and to direct us to restaurants and other places of interest. It's so nice to have someone local that can offer their insight. We really enjoyed the outdoor living area and the grounds. Unfortunately there were no ripe pineapples, but maybe next time. It really is just a 5min walk to the main street in town, and maybe 15min walk to Half Moon Bay where Tanjah can direct you to the best snorkeling. I would suggest eating at one of the many open air "street food type" eateries. Don't let the very steep hill on the way to the house intimidate you, it's not as bad as it seems at first.
Reading in the hammocks next to my man with the speakers playing our favourite tunes, a little nude tanning on the very private rooftop patio-heaven in Honduras has a name; Casa Rara
The host was very welcoming. Desiree made sure we were taken care of from the minute we landed in Roatan. We were picked up and driven direct to La Casa Rara. We were given a quick briefing on the rules of the house and we were off to explore the island. The house is located in a great part of West End there is plenty of diving snorkeling less than a 5 minute walk from the Casa. The neighborhood is safe and the house itself is beautiful. This house has plenty of space and it makes you feel like you are actually a resident of the island. I would recommend this house to anyone!
This is a wonderful house to come home to after a day snorkeling or diving. Situated on a hill, the house catches cooling ocean breezes (a real bonus during the humid days of August) and a big, high-ceilinged porch takes advantage of this. The inside of the house (which wraps part of the porch) also gets good air through many windows and there are ceiling fans throughout. The view from the porch includes trees and the ocean and the nearest houses are far enough that you don’t hear their residents.
The main house has one bedroom and a second bed behind a curtained area in the main living room/dining room/kitchen. In the nearby “tower” there is an additional air-conditioned bedroom and bath. The view from the top of the tower takes in ocean and much of the island—a great place for an evening drink. Part of what makes Casa Rara so inviting is the many homeowner’s touches such as firm mattresses, cotton sheets, hot water with good pressure, quiet, effective fans and adequate lighting which are a rarity in most of the hotels and local homes where I have stayed in Honduras. The kitchen has a nice layout, the appliances work well and there are new Teflon pans, decent knives and a “starter” supply of staple items such as oil, salt, sugar, dish soap—more homeowner’s touches. Overall, this feels like a house that the owner spends time in and takes care of, not a place that is simply rented year-around.
The owner’s agent, Tanja, is helpful, clear and easy to contact. The owner, Desiree, is warm, thoughtful and full of helpful information about what to do in the area. We came for the SCUBA diving and thoroughly enjoyed diving with both of the shops she recommended (Coconut Tree Divers and Native Sons). She was also very helpful with details like getting a taxi from the airport to West End.
Overall, this house was sooo relaxing to come home to after a day of diving (and for lunch between dives). It is about a 5 minute walk to the western end of town and a 15 minute walk from the central “roundabout” near Coconut Tree Divers. The feeling of privacy of one’s own home and the ability to cook one’s own food were really a plus over staying in a hotel.
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Casa Rara for a whole week and we truly loved this darling house.
First of all, it’s great location: it’s in the West End, a 5-7minute walk takes you to the ocean and the main road where you’ll find the restaurants, bars and numerous dive shops!
So if you’re looking for privacy and a quiet retreat to fall back onto, the casa is the right place! Close to everything yet far enough so you don’t hear the island’s nightlife.
You'll love to settle down with a book on one of the two hammocks hanging in the vast open covered porch or just sit there and listen to the birds chirping or the breeze in the luscious flora surrounding the casa.
This house can easily accommodate 6 people (or more if you have young kids). A big plus: a clothes washer to do laundry! :-)
If you’re looking for a place to let go of the stress or to throw a small party for your new friends, that’s the place to be!
Also, our two hosts, Desiree and Tanya were always very helpful and made sure everything was there to meet our needs and make our stay comfortable.
On another note, be careful about using the ATM machines in West End as most of them will clone your cards and make your money disappear in no time! Use the one at the gas station or go to the bank.
I love Travel and New Orleans and I love the culture and people of Honduras where I was a Peace Corps volunteer. I believe when you travel you need to have a good time and experience the language and culture of the people who host you as a visitor. I hope you will enjoy the Casa Rara which was built with love in a Honduran style. I'm a nurse and my husband is a teacher. We love to host nurses, teachers and scuba divers
