This Landmark Art Deco Penthouse has it all: 3 blocks form the beach, Santa Monica Promenade, and Montana Avenue! The huge roof deck garden with Hammock, BBQ and Firepit seriously competes with the fully renovated, light and airy interiors...
This is a true gem in a landmarked streamline moderne building. Even with the interiors fully renovated, there is a true historic feel - (and the place has history: David Hockney lived in this very apartment!) Huge windows look right into the treetops and out onto the roof garden. Hammock, loungers, outdoor dining table - you'll probably want to spend all your time outside! But inside is just as nice: The kitchen comes with all the amenities: fridge + freezer, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and fully stocked with all pots, pans and utensils for gourmet cooking.
There is wireless internet, BlueRay DVD and a movie screen/projector setup for cozy evenings on the big couch. A bathroom with a generous tub-shower, an office adjoining the bedroom (queen size bed very comfortably fits two) and a full size closet will make you feel like you've just moved into the coolest place on earth :)
The location can't be beat, either: You are mere steps from the bustling Promenade and downtown Santa Monica with all its restaurants, bars, and shops, or a quieter but equally happening Montana Avenue with cafes and boutiques. Even closer is Palisades Park with the Santa Monica Bluff and the beach right beyond for morning runs or sunset strolls, or the Santa Monica Canyon with its shaded streets and modernist homes - and if you really want to get out, Malibu and the Santa Monica mountains are just a short drive up the Pacific Coast Highway.
While you rent this home, the whole space is yours to enjoy (responsibly). - Since this is my actual home, a few cupboards will be marked as private but everything that's out and about is yours to use. I count on you being caring and respectful just like you would be in your own home..
Interaction with Guests
I will be around to check you in and out and show you all the details - I also have a lot of information about the area, activities, and things to see and do compiled for guests, so I can get you off to a good start on your stay! And if you have questions while you are here, I am only a few blocks and a phone call away.
There is Street parking with a preferential parking pass that you can use. But everything is pretty much walkable and all the major bus lines are just a few blocks away. I have one bicycle that you can borrow, and there is also a bike rental just down on the beach off of Montana Ave.
Our building is a community of really wonderful neighbors, and we all get along very well. Please treat them all with consideration and kindness and you will encounter nothing but friendliness.
The only thing to be aware of is noise: While the roof was clearly born and built to be an entertainment space, be aware that even moderate sound travels enormously far from up here. I hope you'll understand that in the interest of your own enjoyment, future guests, and the neighbors it is better not to throw major parties while you are here. The space is a home first and foremost...
A short but excellent visit to Santa Monica. Brilliant location, quiet but just a short walk to cafes, shops etc. apartment is an amazing space, huge terrace area too. wish we were staying longer!
Corinna was a great hostess, very helpful and flexible. The apartment was really quirky and the roof terrace was wonderful. 3rd street was a perfect location for us, close enough to the centre of Santa Monica, but quiet and off the main drag. The building itself is charming and the area is full of interesting architecture and fauna. There are a couple of practicalities that were quite challenging; we were very cold at night, being unused to the heating system we found it very loud so it was a toss up between being cold or kept awake by the noise. We bought some fleece pyjamas which helped. Also the plumbing is antiquated, one of the other flats had a problem with their plumbing so the water was turned off two mornings in a row, meaning that once we had to leave for the day without having a shower or a cup of tea which wasn't ideal.
Hello Jo and Clive,
I am very sorry about the inconvenience with the plumbing problem in the lower unit during your stay! That was quite outside of my powers.. Coming from Europe myself I totally hear you about the forced air heat, too! This system (heater blows hot air out of grilles) is the way 99% of California homes are heated, and certainly different from European radiators, let alone radiant heat which I would love to have. Such are the downsides to living in a landmark. I hope these things didn't dampen your enjoyment too much. I hope you'll consider coming back - we usually only have about 7 days of winter a year .. ; )
- with best wishes , from Corinna
The appartment is amazing! Lots of natural light, well decorated, super clean and gourgeous outdoor area. Located in a very quiet area but few minutes from cafes, shops, restaurants and beach.
Corinna is a cheerful, caring host. She will give good insights of what to do if needed.
Will definitely repeat!
We stayed 5 days at the Rooftop Retreat in Santa Monica. The apartment looked even better than on the photos (the terrace is magical) and Corinna made us feel really welcome! The location is fantastic in quiet residential streets only 3 blocks from the beach. It's close enough to walk to the centre of Santa Monica (3rd Street Promenade).
Corinna is a wonderful hostess, she is very responsive and had everything we needed on arrival as well as a parking permit for the duration of our stay, which was extremely thoughtful.
We would definitely recommend this property for anyone wanted to experience the best of Santa Monica living.
stay in corinna's house is bliss. the apartment is beautiful, bright ,spacious, super clean and tastefully decorated, the terrace is exceptional. it is magical the evening with the sunset. We would definitely recommend the Corinna's apartment .she is a wonderful person who warmly welcomed us. She is available,we had a small problem and it was resolved. thank you for all ,corinna we are extremely happy with our stay in santa monica.
Stunning flat, superb location, Corinna couldn't have been kinder or more helpful, loved our stay, just sad to leave.
Corinna’s roof-top apartment was our coolest Airbnb during our West Coast trip. We would have loved to stay longer in this vintage house with its awesome rooftop terrace; two nights were definitely too short to see L.A. and the beach life in Santa Monica and Venice. The apartment is located in a magnificent and quiet area with lots of Art-Deco and Bauhaus-style vintage houses, wonderful old trees and lush vegetation. Design fans will love it. David Hockney used to live in this apartment. Good coffee shops are nearby and it is only a short walk to the beach! Corinna was very helpful in providing all sorts of information. We highly recommend this place.
I have been living and working in LA for over 10 years, after falling in love with California on my first visit from my native Germany. I am an architect by trade, and living in this building - and especially in my unit - is my absolute delight! I just feel that with my busy life I can no possibly spend enough time here to pay this place justice, so I decided to share the joy with others and hopefully give them a chance to experience Los Angeles in a unique way.
I have lived all over Germany, in Madrid, Sydney, New York, and many places in LA, and welcoming travelers always makes me feel like I am on vacation myself :)
Other than traveling and exploring (especially nature), I love all things design, theater, running, hiking, dancing, gardening, sewing and in general all sorts of projects and crafts.
