Description

The space

My House is situated between the town and the quay area. It is a 15 minute walk to town,( you can stroll into town along the old railway line which is now a popular walking and cycling area.) Or you can cycle on the 2 bikes I provide. You can cycle on the 42klm greenway route or you can cycle to Croagh Patrick. It is a 5minute walk to the Quay area and Westport House. There are pubs and restaurants at the Quay. There is a big supermarket 3mins from my door. Westport is a unique and charming heritage town. It was voted best place to live in in Ireland by Irish Times readers in 2012. Ireland West Airport is 1hr away, Shannon Airport 2and half hrs, Dublin Airport 4hrs away. Westport has lots of outdoor activities to offer, eg. Gael Force, Sea2Summit . You can also avail of boat trips from the quay area. Other activities include hiking, fishing, horse riding, spas, surfing. There are also many stunning beeches to enjoy. No visit to Westport would be complete without a visit to Croagh Patrick (The Reek) which is a 10 mins drive away. The newly established great western greenway starts in Westport. The greenway is the longest off-road cycle and walking trail in Ireland. Built upon the old railway line between Achill Sound in the north and Westport to the southeast of clew bay, it extends for 43.5 km (27 miles) . It also won 1st prize at the European greenways development completionWhen you are tired out after all the activities you can relax either in my home, or you can visit some of the many restaurants in town or at the quay. If you are cooking dinner I will provide fresh organic vegetables from my garden when in season. After dinner you can use the front sitting room to relax by the fire and watch a film, or you can stroll into town to visit some of the many music pubs. Matt Molloy of the Chieftians has a great music pub.
If there is anything you need during your stay I will be very happy to try and provide it, as I want all my guests to have a really good time in my home.

Guest access

The guests have full access to the kitchen and living room at all times. The bathroom is shared and I also have a small bathroom downstairs.

Interaction with guests

I am around for guests who need any info about the area, or need any help during their stay. I also know how to give guest privacy especially if they want to cook a meal in the evenings.

The neighborhood

I love the fact that you can walk down to the quay area and see the boats, or go for a walk down to Westport house. We also have a nice flat walk into town along an old railway line which has been made in to a walking and cycling way.

Getting around

There is a train station and buses come from all over Ireland. Free private parking at my house.

Other things to note

I also have a single room to let, its titled cosy single room breakfast and bikes included.

Ruth's place was everything we had hoped for: a view of Croagh Patrick, well-tuned bicycles, brown bread and coffee to start the day, a fire in the stove, warm laughter and advice, lovely cottage gardens, and a fine bed to rest our weary heads at the end of the day. We could have spent a lifetime just enjoying the simple pleasures of Ruth's home, but for a week we ventured into the beauty of Mayo County which was at our finger tips. The Great Western Greenway is right off of Ruth's street and it led us to adventures on Achill Island, downtown Westport and the Quay. We had a spectacular time. Many, many thanks to Ruth for opening her home to us and for being such a gracious hostess. Highly recommend!

We had a lovely few days staying in Ruth's cosy home. We both felt very welcome and loved staying here. The breakfast arrangements suited us both very well, I loved having a choice of fruit and whatever breads we preferred as well as delicious fresh eggs, and i even had purple sprouting broccoli from the garden with poached eggs on the top one morning! Malachy loved having a free bike available an cycled all the way to Achill on the beatiful Greenway one day I loved sitting by the turf fire in the sitting room in the evenings and felt pampered with a hot water bottle inmy bed for extra cosiness Thanks Ruth, we'll be back! Westport has loads to offer and your home is just perfect

Westport was a surprising treat.... We were attracted to Ruth's lovely house thanks to the prospect of bicycles to borrow free of cost but Westport itself didn't disappoint either! The house is near both the quay, with lovely restaurants and views, and Westport house (insufficient time to visit). Ruth is an excellent host, very welcoming and even permitting use of her kitchen . She provided us with helmets and bikes and sent us on our merry way along the Greenway which was a great cycle path out to Achill island. We didn't manage the full stretch but it's great to know we can come back to such a cosy house and explore again on two wheels...!

Ruth is a lovely host. She was very helpful, picked us up and dropped us off at the station, helped us make reservations at a restaurant. She has bikes that she lends to the guests which is great, we used them in to town which only takes 5-10 minutes. Our stay at Ruth's was wonderful and I would highly recommend staying at her place.

My boyfriend and I stayed at at Westport for four nights and we had a really pleasent stay at Ruths place. The bedroom is spacious and has lovely furniture and detailed decoration. There are numerous maps and tourist leaflets as well. The bathroom is modern, very clean and there is enough space. We liked especially that we could use the kitchen every evening to cook dinner for ourselves. Further, there was enough space to store groceries, we even had an own shelf in the fridge. And we could use the leftover supplies from other guests and the many spices in Ruths kitchen. We particularly enjoyed the ample and tasty breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, 'real' coffee, loads of fruits and eggs. With everything else as well, Ruth was very helpful and caring, as she picked us up from the train station with her car and showed us around Westport in a quick drive. This accomodation is also just perfect as Ruth provides relly good bikes, which we used to cycle the greenway and to Murrisk. This is an incredible advantage in a region that is living from cycle tourism ;) In addition to that, Ruth gave us sticks to climb the Croagh Patrick, that helped us enourmously when climbing the steep mountain. We fully enjoyed our stay at Ruths place and would love to come back any time. You will find everything you need and even more in her airbnb and we highly recommend Ruths place to everyone coming to Westport!
