My house is an old shop front that used to be a newsagent. Most Thursdays to Saturdays I turn it into a space (aptly named "The Newsagency") for solo/duo/bands to come and perform. I live behind it in a 2 bedroom apartment.
My house is an old shop front that used to be a newsagent. Most Thursdays to Saturdays I turn it into a space (aptly named "The Newsagency") for solo/duo/bands to come and perform.
Down the back there is a two bedroom apartment with kitchen, (tiny) bathroom, courtyard and office/sun room.
The office/sunroom has a sofa bed that is available for short stay accomodation. Ideal for backpackers or even touring musicians needing somewhere over night.
There is a bus stop right at the front door or a 20 minute walk to Newtown station and plenty of street parking. There is a beautiful park with a gym and swimming pool directly opposite and one of the hippest pubs in Sydney across the road. Cafes, shopping centre, Addison Rd Markets and great small bars are all within walking distance too.
This is not your normal living arrangement but it's THE perfect place for creative people or night owls who love live music or want to be in a good vibe. I try and make shows finish at the very latest 12am. I do most of my work from home (I'm a freelance musician as well as venue operator) so I'm fairly flexible with my time so will most likely be about to help make your holiday in Sydney super fun!
Kitchen (Eating out advised though!)
Bar Fridge located in your room for food/drinks
Interaction with Guests
I love meeting new people so I do try and be there whenever I can to meet my guests. My presence is subject to touring and other work commitments. Rest assured I'll always have someone to welcome you into the space.
It's a beautiful community with everything you need at your fingertips. I love that I can walk across the road to The Vic and meet a new friend. I love the park across the road and the cafe's down the street.
An easy bus ride into the city/Circular Quay
Bus stop right outside my house.
Otherwise you can hail a cab right outside or Newtown or Sydenham train station 20 minutes walk away
Other Things to Note
Please keep in mind cockroaches, I do my very best to rid the house of them but they are a common problem in NSW - particularly around Marrickville AND near food places (like pizza places)
Treat those how you'd like to be treated. Clean up after yourself. Pretty simple really.
Please respect my need to use the desk in your room. I mostly work Tuesdays- Fridays 12pm- 5pm
No smoking except in the courtyard.
My stay with Ali was great! Not only does she have an incredibly unique place in an awesome part of town but she is also welcoming and friendly and even helped me get to the event I was in town for, I can't recommend her enough and look forward to coming back!
Alison is a very conscientious and hands on host who generously invited us into her creative community. Her home was rustic but homey, perfect for backpackers or musicians looking to get into the scene in Sydney. Alison was very inviting, welcoming and shared everything in her home and studio. We loved the interaction with her artistic friends who were part of her venue. We will be coming back to stay with her and to support her venue activities in the near future.
I really enjoyed my stay by Alison. The flat is simple but nice. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Sometimes there were great concerts which you're welcome to join.
Marrickville and Newtown are alternative and safe parts of Sydney and you need just 30 minutes to the centre.
I would go back every time again!
Best place in Sydney !!
Ali is a really easy going host and the room is good for people who are looking for one place to live in Marrickville/Newtown.
There is a bus stop just in front of the door so it's easy to go to the city !
We went to this place twice and I will be happy to go back again the next time !
I recommend this place !!
I really enjoyed my time at The Newsagency, who wouldn't want to hear live music from the comfort of their room :) gigs never finished too late on the weekend either so was never bothered by them. Though I didn't get to meet Ali until the end due to the horrible circumstances she was dealing with I was amazed at how accessible and helpful she was to me! I fell in love with the people and the area and as The Newsagency is in the heart of it all it was a lovely experience for me.
Alison is a lovely woman and a talented artist. She has been very kind to me. We hung out a bit and had a good exchange on Australia and so on. I would definitely recommend you to stay with her. The Agency is a one of a kind spot and if you are into alternative acts and music this is definitely a place to discover. I wish her the best of the best for the future. Thank you a lot !
We've had a bad experience with Alison's place. The pictures looked more then different.Dirty, bugs and on top Alison was not at home. Her friend told us she is in Adelaide for already 6 weeks and won't coming back at the time when we stayed at her place. We've left her place 10 mins later and had big problems to get our money back, cause of her clever policy. We wanted to stay for 5 days.
I suggest that Irfan is very firm in his decision and reads all the fine print before booking a place! I received a message from him on AirBnb the day before he was meant to check in saying that he wanted to cancel because he had plans to go to Brisbane. Due to this information I didn't prepare the room for him and his girlfriend. The next day, with no other communication that he wanted to renege, he called me wondering when he and his girlfriend could move in. I was away at the time which of course isn't ideal but definitely not uncommon for hosts - particularly when attending to a very sick mother ( mine is currently battling stage 4 brain cancer amongst other complications - he wasn't compassionate about that at all) However, I did the best that I could to find someone to quickly prepare and open my house up for them. I didn't have to do this given they had decided to cancel but I did anyway. It seems to me that Irfan only reneged because he saw that I had a strict cancellation policy (which is an option for all Airbnb hosts - contrary to what he states in his review of me as a "clever" policy on my part) and not because he wanted to experience my home - which is enjoyed by so many people - not just Airbnb guests. It was a very disappointing experience and he caused me a lot of unnecessary stress that I don't need in my life right now. I definitely would not recommend Irfan to anyone offering cheap accommodation as it appears his comfort levels demand more than a $35/night stay. It doesn't seem like Airbnb is the right service for him and that perhaps the Hilton would be a much better choice. I sincerely hope his trip in Australia teaches him perspective - but I suspect it won't.

My name is Alison, I am a 27 year old highly motivated and passionate musician. I run my own business so I work my own hours. I teach singing, write songs, play piano, do gigs, record and also run the music venue, The Newsagency. (which is what the apartment backs on to) I also love playing netball, enjoy a good wine/beer and reading self-help books.
I love inviting people into my house (hence the venue) and am an extreme social butterfly. If you're looking for a fun "insiders" guide to Sydney, I am your gal!
