Hadrian's Wall (2 miles)
The wall built by Emperor Hadrian in AD122 - a World Heritage site that spans 73 miles from coast-to-coast. Brownside cottage is situated on one of the best parts. You can walk the rugged path, passing Roman Forts and Mile Stones.

Vindolanda (2 miles)
People travel from all over the world to this Roman Fort. During the summer there are live excavations. You can walk through the ruins, see a fort reconstruction and visit the museum that houses the Vindolanda Writing Tablets.

Northumberland National Park (2 miles)
A 400square mile park with 700 miles of trails. You can hike, run, bike, kayak, sail and observe the wildlife.

North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (5 miles)
The name says it all, you'll see open heather moors between deep dales, upland rivers, hay meadows and stone-built villages.

Kielder Forest (35 miles)
A breathtaking 250 square miles of forest surrounding a reservoir. You can hike, bike, sail, kayak or stargaze at the observatory that takes advantage of the darkest skies in Britain.

The most complete Roman Fort in Britain with sweeping views of the valley.

Allen Banks (3 miles)
A Victorian garden in the gorge of the River Allen. An idyllic place for a tranquil walk, a dip in the river and a picnic.

Hexham (12 miles)
A beautiful and historic market town with cobbled streets, stone architecture and a stunning Abbey. There is a large selection of entertainment and shops.

Newcastle Upon Tyne (30 miles)
Newcastle has a rich history and was once one of the world's largest ship building centres. It's easy to spend a day looking at the stunning architecture of Grey Street, the Quayside and the Tyne and Millennium Bridges. There's no shortage of great restaurants, shops, bars and entertainment.

The cottage is situated close to the villages of Henshaw and Bardon Mill. There is a village shop and a pub in Bardon Mill as well as a bus station and a train station with connections to nearby towns and cities. The nearest supermarket is in Haltwhistle - a 10 minute drive from the cottage. There are a few options for restaurants nearby all of which are listed in the guidebook we provide in the cottage.
