About this listing
You'll walk a few minutes on paved footpaths to reach our Cool House. There's no car access here which creates a lovely green community feeling. Our villa is the only house in a small Balinese family compound, but still quiet and private. Relax!
Airbnb has just selected us as one of 12 properties in the world, on their site, to be highlighted for our high standards. To enter the house you walk through a compound with a super friendly golden retriever, Milo. This makes the house very safe and provides a taste of Balinese compound life. The house is two-story and larger than most in Penestanan (120 m square; 1200 square ft). I am an architectural designer and have attended to many small details that make the space super comfortable for lounging. The downstairs is loft-like with (10ft/3+ meter high ceilings), an open kitchen and a natural outdoor stone and wood bathroom. Large sliding glass doors easily open the living space to the lush outdoors. The master bedroom is spacious and connects to a large balcony with a 9ft. (3 meter) long daybed (very romantic). We have also recently added a shared salt water pool just a 5 minute walk from this property for the use of our guests (check the photos)!
Made and Made will make you a breakfast of fruit and yogurt breakfast.
Jampi, my masseur, comes for $15 per hour to the house or walk to Eve Spa or Lala Lili Spa just a block or so away. Airport pickup (but not drop off) is included for stays of four (4) days or more. For stays of less, we are happy to pick you up for US $28. Our driver can be hired to take you to some of my lesser known favourite spots. Or we can help you rent a moped. Fabulous world class fusion dining is walking distance and the center of Ubud is about a 20 minute leisurely walk. Bring your laptop and access our high speed wifi. Enjoy!
I'll leave you my list of my spots and favorite restaurants at the moment. I am putting together some sample itineraries for 3 day stays, 5 day stays and 7 day stays with side notes for designers, the sporty, yoguinis, the spiritually oriented. I know how confusing it can be to arrive and be faced with so many choices. After 10 years in Ubud and my design experience, I have narrowed down the choices to the best of the best. :) Allo or Made (another one) can take you there!
We are also happy to organize a trip to healers in Ubud and the surrounding areas as well as to special ceremonies at the Water Temple for the Full Moon. And we have an excellent friend who can organize a juice fast or a healthy eating experience, complete with a raw cooking class. In fact, she can be hired to work up a private spa experience for you... complete with health rice paddy walks, private yoga...
We provide our guests with the use of a Bali phone with Sri's number and mine, programmed into it.
Interaction with Guests
On the first morning, Sri our angel will come by to help orient you. I will be by once during your stay and can always be contacted by phone or email.
Penestanan now has an intimate yoga center, Intuitive Flow, just 4 rice paddies away. We have ten or so charming little healthy food restaurants: Yellow Flower (3 minute walk), Alchemy (4 minute walk), (Indonesian, Japanese, Vegetarian Organic/Raw, Indian, Two fabulous bakeries) within the equivalent of five blocks away. A Bintang supermarket is a 10 minute walk. In the morning wake up to the sounds of geckos, roosters, and cooing spotted turtle doves while taking in the view of 3 volcanoes.
There are overpriced taxis to take you into town and back. ($5) Or you can rent a motor scooter..
or hire a driver for a half day or full day. Walking is quite wonderful as well!
Other Things to Note
If you have kids, there is a pond in the back and the staircase railing is open and not kid-proof (see photo #6)... but having said that, many families absolutely love staying at our house. It's Bali... imperfect and delightful .
Treat our house as you would your own... enjoy... relax....!
It is a two stories house located in a quiet area of Penestanan but very close to city centre!!
This is a fantastic place, nestled in a small group of homes in a courtyard, with a rice paddy beside it. It was much quieter than we expected. Large open bedroom and covered verandah upstairs, spacious indoor/outdoor living areas and outdoor shower. Alejandra and Sri (housekeeper) were incredibly helpful and caring. It is though very hard to find the first time on your own, so I recommend engaging one of their friendly and helpful drivers to get you there. We also had an informative guided walk through the rice fields. Although we were happy to prepare the generous fruits and beverages for breakfast, their housekeepers will come and do that too.
We had an absolutely wonderful week at Alej and Jaime's house in Ubud. Some of our favourite moments were enjoying an early morning cup of coffee on the gorgeous upstairs balcony and playing with Milo, the friendly golden retriever who lives with the Balinese family next door. Alej and Jaime were very welcoming and stopped by to make sure that we had no problems. The house is very well-situated for visiting Ubud but provides some calm respite when you just want to relax. We would definitely stay at the house if we return to Ubud.
We loved Ubud and the villa so much! There was lots to do and see, while the villa was set back from any busyness going on, to make it completely relaxing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were gutted to leave. The only thing that was a shame was that the pool was quite a distance from the villa, but this was literally the only down side. We'd definitely go back :)
We had a fantastic time in Penestanan!! Probably our favourite place in Bali. The cool house was perfect for our family of 5. It was very spacious, private and well equipped. Breakfast was a nice touch. It's walking distance to the best food we've eaten during our 5 weeks in Bali. Yellow Flower, and the vegetarian Indian Restaurant in penestanan was amazing!!!!! Also the Taco Casa in Ubud which was recommended by Alejandra. We had a fantastic week exploring the local area, it was an amazing escape from the busier Ubud. Alejandra's pool was only a 5 minute walk away when you wanted to cool down. Great villa, perfect spot!
My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the architects house in Ubud. The design is very original and helps to create a wonderful place to stay. Before our stay Sri was always on hand to help book drivers or answer any questions and this didn't change once we were at the house. In three days Sri sorted out our washing, a three hour massage, scooter hire, a sunrise trek up Mount Batur and the fast boat to Gili T. We are very great full for this as it helped to make our stay in Ubud even more wonderful. It was only a shame that we didn't get to meet Sri or Alendraj but that's probably because we were always so busy!
Alejandra's place is lovely, airy and spacious. It is situated just outside of the main ubud centre in an area with a friendly local community feel. Ale and her partner came to visit us on the first morning and filled us in on all the things to do and see. They even came on meet us later on in our stay to lend a helping hand when we were having trouble getting cash out, so thank you! Made, Made and Sri were all very friendly and helpful too - and made delicious breakfasts! The downstairs is totally made of glass which is beautiful in the day as you can see out over the greenery but at night we found this a little daunting. This is probably just down to our london style of living though. Overall we would definitely recommend Ale's place :)

About the Host, Alejandra
I am a world wanderer and have lived and designed in many countries. But so far Indonesia, specifically Bali is my favorite.. (12 years and counting). Two years ago my beloved Jaime, who is a psycholgist from Vermont and a passionate meditator, joined me, so now my paradise is much sweeter.
My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner.
In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures.
If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know...
we can show you what we are working on...
