The Space

Airbnb has just selected us as one of 12 properties in the world, on their site, to be highlighted for our high standards. You can find us in the Hospitality section on your laptop or on your ipad or iphone under Accuracy... There is a small interview with me .. and a photo of one of our guests at Jazmin...They tell me a video is forthcoming... :)
You'll walk (about 3 blocks) in to my Cool House. There's no car access here in Penestanan, which (email hidden) community feeling, since you have to walk the small paths. My Cool House is the only house in the only family compound in this area of Penestanan.
Walk through the compound to the back. This makes my house very safe, and you get a small taste of Balinese compound life. Offerings are always being prepared by Made for the many Balinese ceremonies and they have an extremely cute golden retriever. But the house is still private. My house is not huge, but much larger than most of the houses in Penestanan (1200 sq. ft). I’m a designer who has been living in Bali for 10 years and I've made sure many details have been attended to. The downstairs is loft-ike (10ft high ceilings) with an open kitchen/living room and a wonderful outdoor stone bathroom (bathe under the stars). There is a daybed that is also a double bed. All of this opens to the outdoors. The master bedroom is super-spacious and opens to a large balcony with a 9ft. (3 meter) long daybed (very romantic). Penestanan now has a small yoga center just 4 rice paddies away. We have ten or so charming little healthy food restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Vegetarian Organic/Raw, Indian, Two fabulous bakeries) within the equivalent of five blocks away. In the morning wake up to the sounds of geckos, roosters, the coo of spotted turtle doves and the view of 3 volcanoes. Nyoman will make you a breakfast of fruit and yogurt breakfast or you can give him money to buy additional supplies at the market just a few blocks away. We also have a farmer’s market on Tuesdays.
Jampi, my masseur, comes for $12 per hour to the house or walk to Eve Spa just a Airport pickup (but not drop off) is included by Allo, our driver and he can be hired to take you to some of my lesser known favorite spots. Or we can help you so you can rent a moped. Fabulous world class fusion dining and spas in walking distance and the center of Ubud about a 12 minute leisurely walk. Bring your laptop and enjoy high speed wifi. We now even have a flat screen TV for movie watching and I'll leave you my DVDS. If you'd like you can come join me on Sunday mornings with enthusiastic kids from 5 to 14 for play in English. Enjoy!

I'll leave you my list of my favorite masseurs and drivers and secret spots and restaurants. I am putting together some sample itineraries for 3 day stays, 5 day stays and 7 day stays with side notes for designers, the sporty, yoguinis, the spiritually oriented. I know how confusing it can be to arrive and be faced with so many choices. After 10 years in Ubud and my design experience, I have narrowed down the choices to the best of the best. :) Allo or Made (another one) can take you there!

We are also happy to organize a trip to healers in Ubud and the surrounding areas as well as to special ceremonies at the Water Temple for the Full Moon. And we have an excellent friend who can organize a juice fast or a healthy eating experience, complete (email hidden) class. In fact, she can be hired to work up a private spa experience for you... complete with health rice paddy walks, private yoga...

We provide our guests with the use of a Bali phone with Sri's number and mine, programmed into it.

  • Hi Alejandra,
it has been a pleasure to stay in your house. It is really beautiful and we really loved to stay on the terrace or reading downstairs, listening the frogs and the water fountain. Sri was really kind and all the girls that were coming in the morning were really nice. The house is fantastic and I will recommend staying there also to my friends. We did some yoga classes close to your house, and the lessons were perfect. The neighbours around the house were super kind.
    Thanks
    Desiree

  • The Cool House is a dream! The golden retriever Milo was a charmer, and Made & Made made amazing breakfasts (fresh fruit, yogurt, toast). We went on a sunrise hike at Mt. Batur and they were kind enough to leave us breakfast to return home to! We also booked an in-house massage thanks to the local phone Sri/Alej provided- highly recommended!

The property itself is beautiful, peaceful, and in a perfect location for those seeking easy access (15 minute walk) to Ubud, but also some calm and relaxation. This was the first place we stayed in Bali and I'm already dreaming of coming back. :)

  • We stayed 4 nights in the Cool House and it was very nice. I have to say that the picture looks better that the house itself but probably because the pictures were taken when the house was very new.

The house is located 10 mins motorbike drive from Ubud downtown which means it is not so noisy and busy. It is around 5 mins walk into a very small lane. Nice and quiet neighborhood with a few decent and affordable restaurants around. I recommend to rent a motorbike upon arrival as there is no public transportation in Ubud and the local "transport" is quite pricy and inconvenient.

The house is spacious and comfortable. The living room is huge and the bathroom's ceiling is half open. You can see the stars and moon at night while taking a shower. Upstairs I like the balcony very much, great place to read and relax.

We arrive before their summer so there is no AC (the electric grid doesn't support the power). It was quite hot in the first day even with 2 fans on, but then we got used to it.

The maid prepares wonderful breakfast for us! And she is a kind person to talk to and ask about places to visit. By the way Alejandra's guide was fantastic. We read the guide through and followed her instructions to find the restaurants and bars and it turned out to be great.

We are happy to go back there and try some other houses of hers. We had a great time.

  • I spent one month at Alejandra's Cool House. Both, the house and the location are fantastic. I felt very much at home at this beautiful place and loved every single day I stayed there. Alejandra is a wonderful host and she and her staff did everything to make my stay unforgettable.

  • We had a perfect stay at this very special place. The house is very spacious, quiet, clean and just perfect to relax. Still it's withing walking distance to Ubud center (app. 15 minutes).
Absolutely fantastic is the big breakfast (fresh fruit, yoghurt and toast) that is prepared for you every Morning! Very helpful was the provided cellphone by which you could easily reach Sri or her husband in case you needed anything.
We can only recommend staying at the cool house!

  • This is such a fantastic place and we had the most wonderful stay. We had some work to do and it was just a brilliant place to get things done but also to really relax and rejuvenate. We had such a lovely evening with Alejandra and she was so welcoming and supportive and made the whole process a total breeze. We were also totally spoilt by Sri, Made and Made who looked after us so warmly every day and who we felt so lucky to meet. The location is ideal and Penestanan is a wonderful place in it's own right but also a great way to be very close to Ubud but just a little removed from all the hustle and bustle. We can't wait for a return trip!

  • Alejandra was the most gracious host and her joglo in Penestanan was perfect for a week in Bali. My husband and I could not be more pleased with our decision to stay here. The bungalow is well appointed, comfortable and clean. To awaken to the crows of roosters and the cooing of doves, then the mid-day solitude, and evening starts with a chorus of frogs and shifts into stillness whilst overlooking rice paddies - our idea of a great holiday. Good food in several small restaurants and excellent yoga classes nearby kept us in the neighbourhood. And best of all - the people! Genuine, warm, most accommodating and friendly! Highly recommend!

About
I am an architectural designer and world wanderer. I've lived and designed in lots of countries, but so far Bali is my favorite and I keep staying... 10 years and counting. My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner. In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures. If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know... we can show you what we are working on... I'm Argentine-American. Hablemos en español, français, italiano.
