We spent two nights at Ethels apt. We had a great time in DC. Ethel is uncomplicated and really nice in comunication.
We got breakfast at morning. The apt is close to the washington mall.
A room that I rent was a big for me and comfortable .
But some reference pictures that I saw in Airbnb when I decided where I stayed before, were different from reality. For me it seemed like dirty.
And there were laundry signs in her Airbnb, although I couldn't rent a dryer and wash machine to do laundry. So I had to wash by hand my clothes by myself every night .
I apologize, but my room has been painted and remodeled since the original picture. The room is the same size and has never been considered dirty by my many guests.
Again I apologize but during the many notes that we exchanged because of our language barrier you never asked me about a place to do your laundry.
Dear Ethel, thank you for the pleasant stay in DC! I had a great time! Ethel was a very responsible host who always responded timely to my messages before arrival and who was always happy to help during my stay. The room was very nice and comfortable and I had the upstairs bathroom almost to myself. The subway is easy to reach (5 min walk) and it is therefore easy to get to the city center. Unfortunately, it takes quite a bit to get to Dulles Airport but otherwise the location was fine, and the area is safe and quiet. However, you'd want to go somewhere else to go out at night but since I was there mainly for business, this was fine. I would always be happy to stay again.
Ethel is a very friendly host and helped us a lot.
The place is comfortable, we found everything we needed. Important for us, we could use the kitchen and even had our own little refrigerator. We enjoyed Ethel’s company and humor. She also helped us very much in our unusual situation to have delayed luggage being delivered late at night. There is a supermarket at very convenient walking distance (5 minutes). We liked the quiet and safe neighborhood.
The location in the Capitol Hill area is fantastic for exploring the city center – the Mall is in walking distance if you like a 20 minute stroll through a wonderful neighborhood. Alternatively, the Metro station is only 10 minutes walking distance and all lines (3!) take you into the center within a few minutes.
Ethel was a gracious host. The listing and reviews were accurate. Location was great. I was able to walk to the Capitol (approx. 1.5 mi.) even though it was snowing.
She made me feel very welcome and gave me step by step directions from the subway. It was very late when I arrived and she waited up to show me everything. She was extremely gracious.
The good: the bed was comfortable (I want the bed frame), the room is very nice, the house nice, the neighborhood safe, and Ethel seems like a very nice person.
The place was convenient and cheaper than a hotel.
If it had been like $20-30 cheaper I probably would have ignored the cons below, but at $69 before taxes which push it up to almost $90 total, yeah, here is the negative.
The bad: first, I don't know what the internet was, I just managed to maybe pirate some neighbor's and use 4g.
Also, no light breakfast or tea was mentioned, not that I was holding my breath, but it is listed in the description, and I would've loved it.
However, the MAJOR problem was the noise -- and I didn't confront her about it and kept quiet when she asked while I was there because I just didn't want to get in the middle of whatever is going on between her and her daughter; maybe that was passive aggressive or maybe it was just that I was a tired traveler passing through. (I am sorry Ethel, it sounds like some stuff is going on, but you and I both know that it wasn't cool while I was there. Your asking me was BS. You knew it was a problem.)
TVs were on and at least one was fairly loud.
But the bigger thing was the family drama I just mentioned.
I heard her yelling fairly frequently and at some point someone else came in, sounded like a male voice who was maybe drunk, who came into the house briefly and left.
Mostly, it was Ethel yelling at her grandson often about his mother upstairs so that the she (and I) could hear her; and this is just what I heard between songs at one point.
I had my headphones on all evening to drown it out but caught stuff between songs and at least once or twice over my music.
In the end, I wish I had stayed at the hotel for about 40% more, slightly more conveniently located, with room service.
And I wouldn't be obligated to write this long review.
At $69 (with cleaning fee) and like $87 after it was all said and done, I can't recommend staying here unless you are in a jam as I was (I had forgotten to book a stay and unwilling to pay $150ish or more).
I'm giving 3 stars because I wouldn't tell someone not to stay there, I just wouldn't recommend it.
That said, I expect Ethel, who is a smart lady, will probably not let this happen again.
A retired active senior citizen, that is very busy with my church activities and water aerobics.
I take classes at the local university from time to time . I like to eat out and go to the theaters with my friends and family. I love pro basketball and football. I also like a few soaps and the home shopping channels.
I am quiet but very friendly, caring and out going.
I spent every minute that I can with my beautiful granddaughter.
