House rules
This place isn’t suitable for children (2–12 yrs) and the host doesn’t allow pets, parties, or smoking.
The hut is set in its own little garden with fruit trees, a picnic table and access to barbecue, sun loungers and a hammock (in the summer, anyway). The loo is in the little blue hut, along with basic washing facilities, but you are welcome to use the shower and toilet in our house. There is a small wood burning stove, a double bed and sofa/seating area in the hut. Tea/coffee and various condiments are available and obviously if you need anything else, just ask. Wifi is okay.

The space
The village with pub and cafe are 1 mile down the road. Good area for walking (popular walks by the River Culm). If you want peace and quiet, this is the place for you. Covid 19 update: The pub is opening on Saturday 4 July for outside use only. The shop/cafe has takeaway facilities between 9 and 2 (excellent scotch eggs, pasties, sausage rolls & fresh sandwiches, as well as tea & coffee etc. (the weekend opening times are different). The pub also has takeaway dinners in the evening.

Other things to note
There are toilet facilities in the Shepherd's Hut area but you will need to come into the house for showers. We ask that you follow all the guidelines for your own safety... hand sanitisers & cleaning sprays will be available for you to use after showering. Someone is usually there to let you in and we are flexible about the times you have your shower, so it's not usually a problem.

OUr Shepherd's hut is in a little garden on its own (see photos) and you will have complete privacy while you are there. We live a mile outside the village of Culmstock, in an old Tythe Barn which has been converted into 4 cottages. It takes about 20 minutes to walk into the village, which has a pub (CulmValley Inn) and a cafe/shop, and lovely riverside walks ( in the summer you can swim in the river). Cycling is also an option if you bring bikes. The shop's hours have changed due to Covid and are now: Mon-Sat: 9-2; Sunday closed. It has takeaways, including scotch eggs, pasties, sausage rolls, filled baps to order, quiche and lots of deli products. There is no indoor seating as yet.

We have lived in Devon for the last 28 years and our 3 children grew up here, so we're very familiar with the area. I am a writer and Rob (my husband) is a photographer but we both work in the local cafe (where they serve a fab breakfast - and lunch!). Our aim with guests is to make them feel very welcome, but also, if they want to be left alone, then to do that - we understand that when people come to a place like our Shepherd's hut, they want some privacy and 'together' time. But we want you to feel able to ask any questions that need answering. Our dog, Dermot, who is quite old now, will be hanging around looking fierce, but he's a total softie so no need to worry. Unfortunately, he's the reason we can't have other dogs on the premises as he's a bit antisocial with some dogs. We really look forward to starting as hosts and meeting new people.

During your stay
We are now open to guests again - hooray!

We can offer a guaranteed Covid cleaning (we have done & passed the airbnb test). We've had to remove some things from the Hut, such as books and other leisure activities but we will still provide tea, coffee, kettle, milk & sugar, a coolbox for your own food, plates, cutlery and any pots and pans you may require, and the barbecue with condiments for you to use. We also have a camping stove if you need one. Look forward to greeting some guests after all this time.
