Good to Know
Everything you need to know about Terracina
There are often two different pricelists. One for standing at the desk, one for being served at the table.
Along the long beach you´ll find both private and public beach-accomodations where you rent chairs and umbrellas. There are also free spots where you can bring your own umbrella and chair.
A cheap and very convenient ticket for travels in the region of Lazio. It´s a personal (you have to write your name and birthdate at the back) one-day-ticket. The most expensive one is BIRG 7, costs euro 10,50. With that you can use the trains, metro, trams and buses (except the ones to Fiumicino) for one day.
If you´re going to Naples you have to buy other tickets. A round trip to Naples costs around 15 euro. You can buy the tickets at the news-stand or in the bar at the bus-station.
There are many in Terracina. You´ll find some in the two main streets Via Roma and Viale della Vittoria.
There are some cinemas in Terracina, always with brand new movies. Everything is dubbed into Italian without subtitles.
There are a few internet-points in Terracina. The quality and the prices differs a lot.
Every Thursday morning (phone number hidden)) there´s a big market in Viale Europa. You can buy clothes, shoes, food, sunglasses, bags, almost everything there. Every day in the week, there´s an indoor fruit- and vegetablemarket at Via del Rio.
Some statal museums give reduction on the entrance-fee for citizens in the EU. Be sure to always bring your passport.
Is in Italian "Farmacia". There are a lot of them in Terracina. If it´s closed, you find a message on the door where to find one which is open.
Is expensive in Italy. "FAI DA TE" means that you have to do the filling yourself, "SERVITO" means that you´ll be helped.
There are two different kinds of stamps. "Prioritaria" is more expensive. "Ordinaria" is cheaper, but then the receiver has to wait for a very long time to get the postcard.
Many things here are cheaper compared to the prices in Northern Europe. Fish and meat are not, fruit and vegetables are, especially during the season.
RENT A CAR/SCOOTER
Talk to us if you want help with this. It´s expensive to rent cars/scooters in Italy.
Almost all the restaurants are closed one day in the week. Which one differs. During the high season is wise to make a reservation. You decide what to eat, you don´t have to try the whole meny. An antipasto + dessert is OK!!
SAINT PETER´S IN ROME
You have to dress properly when you´re visiting Saint Peter´s. Women have to cover the shoulders and men are not allowed to wear shorts.
In general, the shops are closed (phone number hidden). During the low season, most of the supermarkets are closed Thursday afternoon. Sunday afternoon, all the supermarkets are closed.
It´s not dangerous to drink the water in Terracina. In spite of that many buy water in the shops. "Frizzante" is with gas, "naturale" without.
Terracina is as old as its literal sources that claim the town’s origin as Etruscan, Volscian and then a Roman colony. It is extraordinarily capable of surprising you with its immense cultural and artistic patrimony accumulated over the centuries.
At the end of the Etruscan supremacy in the region of Lazio “Terracina” it was in fact handed over to the Italian population, named the Volscians, who then changed its name to “Anxur” . Only after a long period of wars was the foundation of the maritime colony, in 329 B.C. sanctioned. This was of strategic importance for the military and commercial penetration south of the peninsular.
The oldest part of the town, enclosed in the polygonal town walls, was built on the western slope of Mount Sant’Angelo, which extended towards the Valley and the marshes known as the Cannete. Stories from the Roman period tell of the growth of the town and the exploitation of the fertile land to the east, and how the town extended and became inhabited down near the sea , while the original part of the town on the hill remained the more elegant area, rich in mansions and monuments.
During the age of Silla, several monuments in opus incertum and reticulatum, such as the Roman theatre were built, as were the walls that surrounded the monument of Mount Sant’Angelo and the construction of the magnificent Temple of Juppiter Anxur. During the Imperial age between the 1st and 2nd century A.D., there was a second phase of construction in the town, including the great Emilian Forum, the Municipal Square surrounded by porticos and numerous religious and civil buildings and finally the new Trajan port.
The collapse of the Roman Empire dragged the town into a long period of decline.
The ancient Volscian-Roman walls were replaced by a new fortification and Terracina became even more of a fortified town under the influence of the Pontifical State and repeated attempts of feudalism by the noble families of Lazio and the Kingdom of Naples. Meanwhile the expansion of the marshes and the spreading of malaria, progressively reduced the number of inhabitants. Terracina had to wait until the end of the 18th century for its proud recovery when it became the political, administrative and technical centre of the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes much desired by Pope Pious VI. The old town thus became de-militarized and the fortified structures changed their role and became private residences, and public and religious buildings such as the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace.
The lower urban centre of the town was reclaimed and the area, now known as Borgo Pio, was built. Its development continued all through the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century overlapping the reconstruction of the area after the World Wars.

Apartments just like on the photo - everything is new, well done and clean! We didn't hear any noisy in the end of August. Two weeks of full joy in this beautiful place. Big thanks to the family and Mario for the heartiest welcome and willing to help with all questions and information. No doubts of coming back again and certainly advise this lovely apartments for visit to everybody ! We were completely in love with everything)) Big hug and best wishes from Olga and Alexey to Mario and his family!
Lets begin with the apartment - so beautiful, comfortable and well equipped. It appeared exactly the same as seen on fotos: clean, bright and so cozy.
The apartment is well equipped: it has everything you need from spacious wardrobe to washing machine and air conditioner.
Though it is not very big, we felt comfortable to live there (there were 3 of us).
The location is perfect: in about 3-5 min walk from gorgeous beach and in a few steps from two main squares of Terracina - Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Garibaldi, where you can find clothes stores, supermarket, good restaurants and pizzerias. Note, that at these squares you can find free public WI-FI.
We had great vacation caused by warm welcome of our dear hosts. Mario and his family are so nice and friendly people. They met us with fruits, helped to check in and check out, called for the taxi to the airport and were in touch from the day of booking till our departure.
We wish to stay in touch with this beautiful family!
So if you ever go to Terracina there is no other way but to rent this lovely apartment.
Mario and his family gave us a fantastic welcome. They are extremely helpful and friendly. We really enjoied staying in Terracina. The appartment is very well situated and is very neat. A special thanks to Mario's parents who helped us a lot and gave some good advice about the trips and the city. I highly recommend Mario's appartment for a fantastic stay in Terracina!
This apartment is excellent. We lived here for 10 days and it was great vacation.
It has very good location – quite, but near all what you need (see beach in 5 minutes’ walk distance, city centrum, shops). It’s easy to reach it from Rome.
Mario's parents waited for us to check in. We fill us like dear guests here. They welcomed us with champagne and fruits; they always want to make our stay ideal. Moreover they help us to leave Terrachina and take a train to Rome.
This apartment is clean, quiet, very well equipped. Air conditioner is situated in the kitchen and it was so good to not feel cool from it in bedroom, just good temperature in all apartments.
We definitely recommend Mario's apartment!
We liked apartment very much!
It is very comfortable for two persons, absolutely like on the foto, good disposition, beautiful district. Beach, superstore, bus station Cotral are 5-10 minutes walk, history center of town is 15 minutes walk. All, that is necessary (air-conditioner, washing machine) works good.
Mario and his parents are very kindly, friendly and pleasant people.
We spent an excellent time (3 weeks)) here and with pleasure will stay again.
We loved the apartment in Terracina! Mario's parents waited for us to check in. We were very late due to transportation problems. The apartment is in an excellent location - we walked to everything we wanted to see. The view of the temple from the kitchen is inspiring. The apartment is very clean and modern. We had no problems while there. The bathroom is spectacular - beautiful tile work. There was champagne, pear juice, water, and fruit waiting for us. And an excellent pizzeria right outside the door. And another restaurant across the street where we had the best spicy tomato sauce we've every had.
We definitely recommend Mario's apartment and would stay there again.
Bellissimo! Great! Super apartment for 2-3 people, full equipment, close to the beach. Mario and his family very-very kind people! Recommended of course!
This apartment is ideal!!!
We lived there for 6 days.
It's very cozy, quiet, equipped with all you need. We never heard any noises from the street! There was perfect silence.
Air conditioning worked perfectly.
We did not notice problems with the water.
Mario and his parents are very kind, positive and nice people! They helped us every time we asked.
It was a great surprise to see many fruits and the bottle of champagne for us. It was so cute! :)
We 100% recommend to stay in this ideal place!
We were at Terracina in August 2012. The Mario' s apartment was chosen because we were promised to have:
- nice location;
- nicely equipped kitchen;
- air conditioned;
- NOT noisy! ( it was one of the main terms, because we were with our 8 y.o. son;
- not far from the sea.
What did we have :
- three (3) days without water. Any water. We took the shower on the beach. We had no choice. And our 8y.o. son as well. We were told by Mario that it happens in August in Terracina and there was nothing he could do. We would prefer to know this before our trip.
- air conditioner is situated in the kitchen ( where the small bed for the son is situated). The size of the kitchen is around 10 sq.m, and our son got flue on the second day! I was trying to sleep there with air conditioner turned on - no chance! It seems that you are inside the conditioner. We were sleeping all together in the bedroom.
- Not noisy. It is not true!!! All night long you hear all the going on in the square which is in front of your bedroom window. Take into account that the bed is absolutely not acceptable!!!! Neither me, nor my wife could not sleep!
So we decided to leave one day earlier. After informing Mario beforehand we got the answer on the next day that there will be refund of 75€ on check out. ))) we paid 980€ for 5 nights.
Terracina is the dirtiest town I ever saw. Garbage everywhere.
What else. Mario's parents are nice people. True. Though they understand no word in English. Nice fish market and warm sea. All our impressions.
GOOD LOCATION: true, OTHER THAN AS YOU SAY
EQUIPPED KITCHEN: true, OTHER THAN AS YOU SAY
AIR CONDITIONING: PERFECTLY WORKING, OTHER THAN AS YOU SAY
LACK OF WATER IN AUGUST: TRUE, BUT WITHOUT THE USE OF WASHING MACHINE NO PROBLEMS!
THE SOFA BE USED CORRECTLY.
BED COMFORTABLE: true, OTHER THAN AS YOU SAY (ALL GUESTS ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO THIS)
IN AUGUST IS POSSIBLE THAT INCREASES THE NOISE IN THE STREET BECAUSE WE ARE IN TOWN CENTRE!
