Interaction with Guests
I am retired so I am available to answer any questions you may have and am free to give you tours. Just pay the low cost taxi fares and buy me lunch and I will show you why I love this city so much.
My neighborhood is the safest with 24/7 guards. It has the best restaurants at the lowest prices. It is full of parks with views of hills dotted with Inca Ruins. It is just off of Ave. de la Cultura that gives you quick access by bus or taxi to the Plaza de Armas. Note: The closer you are to the Plaza de Armas the more expensive EVERYTHING is. Also you are constantly being sold something. In my neighborhood you are left alone and can relax.
Just two blocks off of Av. de la Cultura with bus stops and taxis everywhere. A taxi to plaza de armas costs $1.50 and takes 8 to 10 minutes. A bus costs 25 cents or 70 solis and takes 10 to fifteen minutes. You can walk to Inca Ruins in 30 minutes with no tourists or admission costs.
Other Things to Note
After living here for years there is no other place that I would rather be.
You will have your keys and can come and go as you please. If you cook just do your own dishes. No pets please. No smoking inside but you can smoke on the front porch.
Richard was a fantastic host! His home and rooms were clean, spacious, had great wifi, hot water and a hair dryer (nice for the cold Cusco nights). He couldn't have been more welcoming or flexible- he let us drop our bags off before check in time and took us on a full day your of the city. We really enjoyed staying in his quieter, residential neighborhood were we could escape the touristy plaza area and the inflated prices that come with it. It was incredibly easy and cheap to take a taxi to the center and home. We had a great experience!
Richard's place is very spacious and got everything we need. He is very helpful and provide us much useful information such as places to go, route recommended, etc. The site maps are extremely useful especially when they are not available in most of tourist sites in Peru.
We stayed with Richard for three days and had a great time. He is an extremely helpful host and went out of his way to help us plan our travels in Cusco and the surrounding areas. He is very knowledgeable about the area and the history of Peru. His neighborhood is good too. Very authentic and Peruvian area where the locals live. If you prefer to stay out of the 'touristy' areas, this is a good place to do so. It's only 4-5 Soles (around $1-$1.50 USD) to catch a cab to Plaza de Armas and most restaurants around his place are much cheaper than the touristy areas. There is also a big shopping mall close by and its very close to the airport (don't worry, its not noisy and very few planes fly, usuallly only in mid-late morning). The place is nice too, huge room and comfortable bed. The only drawback for my wife was using the shower as she said it was difficult to operate but I managed ok. Other than that, for the price and proximity of just a 5-8 minute cab ride to Plaza de Armas, it was a good experience. Richard also offers tours around the city and other areas if that would be of interest.
Richard was a perfect host with a wealth of knowledge of the area, especially if you are looking for trekking opportunities. The room was spacious, clean and nicely decorated. The area felt very safe and it is also very calm, though the taxi from the Plaza de Armas only costs 4 Soles. There is a bakery and many minimercados as well as a new big Western mall and a Mega market in close walking distance. Absolutely recommend for staying!
Staying with Richard was amazing. The area is quiet and only a 5 min taxi ride to downtown. The area is better than downtown since we got to experience more local flare and away from tourist mayhem, lots of good restaurants around. Richard helped us in arranging transport to Ollynta by a private driver named Armando. If you need any transport to Ollynta, asked him about Armando and he will hook you up. Overall, it was a great experience and made our stay in Cuzco more memorable.
It's hard to thank Richard enough. From the moment we arrived (earlier than expected) he made us feel at home. He took us on his tour of the city, pointing out lots of interesting things and taking us into buildings we would have missed alone. He took us on his tour to nearby ruins which are free to wander through (but that looks set to change - so go soon!). He told us about the good places to eat and helped us plan our trekking. In short he is the best host we have ever had on airbnb - a really good man with a kind heart and a beautiful home!
About the Host, Richard
Retired in Cusco for three plus years after living in Costa Rica and Ecuador. I offer one half and full day hikes to neighborhood Inca Ruins and city tours that are included with stay. Knowledgeable of Inca history and night life options of eateries and music clubs. I once played in a local Rock and Blues band. My neighborhood has the best food at the lowest prices in Cusco. Stay with us and experience the best of Cusco at the lowest prices. A new mall is now open just a few blocks away that features an 8 plex movie theater just in case you get tired of hiking. Richard
