The Space

Welcome to our little piece of heaven! This special house with unsurpassable 180 degree ocean views is tucked away on a headland outside the beautiful fishing village of Union Hall in West Cork, Ireland. It boasts only the sea and it's inhabitants including whales and dolphins, as well as handful of coastal farms and homes as neighbours. Located along the route of the Wild Atlantic Way, making Ardra Cottage the perfect base from which to go exploring.

At night, listen to the silence, see the night sky without light pollution....... with the nearby calming, waves lapping over the rocky foreshore. During the day, look out for the distinctive vapour columns of blowing whales, the unmistakable splashing of passing pods of dolphins along with the frenzy of diving gannets!

Escapism in the truest sense of the word, this is where, in the un-light-polluted skies you will be able to enjoy the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets along with Perseid meteor showers on clear nights as well as the reassuring loom of the Fastnet Light shining over a neighbouring headland.

Turning left out of the private driveway takes you you on a two minute stroll down to the local strand (beach) from where it is possible to swim, fish and generally enjoy the sea air. A little further in the other direction (beautiful ten minute coastal walk) takes you to Squince strand for swimming, lazing on the beach, beachcombing and kayaking.

The house offers comfortable accommodation for eight people in two double bedrooms, one bunk room and a teenagers' sitting room/twin sofa beds.

In addition, the kitchen and utility rooms are fully equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave where the wonderful view can be enjoyed whilst preparing the evening meal!

The comfortable galleried lounge offers a cosy wood burning stove to sit around recounting the day's activities or simply to read or play a board or card game.

  • We spent one week in June 2014 in this comfortable cottage with the extraordiary view to the sea and we are happy to say that this was the best we ever had!
Everything was perfect and the handling was realy uncomplicated.
Thanks Mary, we are sure it was not our last vacation in your house.

  • We really enjoyed our stay here, and wished only that it could have been for longer. Mary was working in Cork when we arrived, but her neighbors Wendy and Bernadette were helpful and gracious as could be.

This cottage is obviously well loved and well lived in, with more modern conveniences (and spectacular view) in the downstairs. The kitchen is lovely and looks out over a gorgeous vista to the sea. There is no wifi, so you're going to be pretty inaccessible to the outside world. That being said, you'd really have to rent a car to visit here. The village is a few miles away, with a shop and several pubs.

West Cork was generally charming and everyone was so helpful and nice. We'd love to visit again for longer.

We are a family of five (three teenage children). Ardra Cottage is our little piece of heaven in West Cork. We love the sea and the great outdoors and this gives us the best of everything. The children sail regularly at neighboring Glandore; we kayak from our local beach (2 mins walk) and swim every day that the weather will allow. We enjoy long walks with the dogs enjoying the wonderful scenery and hidden beaches, nooks and crannies in the area. If you, like us, enjoy outdoor life, then West Cork is the place to come!
