Interaction with Guests
Paradise Lodge BB is a family owned and managed by American transplants of Southern California. Jim and Carol fell in love with Costa Rica and decided to stay. Jim is a magician, a long time standing member of the Magic Castle of Hollywood. So be prepared to see a bit magic while you’re here. Carol a native Californian yet fluent in Spanish can be an aid to you for anything you might need while you stay in Paradise Lodge BB.
Carol and her husband were so sweet and easy to work with. They were able to accommodate our crazy travel schedule and were so willing to do so. They welcomed us with lemonade and snacks, which was fantastic after a long trip getting there. The breakfast Carol made for us was absolutely delicious, and you could tell they take great pride in their home, this guest house, and how they provide for their guests. The location isn't 100% in La Fortuna, but rather about 30-40 minutes away from the main area where you would want to go do your activities. The property is extraordinarily secluded and really quite beautiful.
Speaking of secluded: be sure to have a car that can get you to these guys. You will drive down a grassy path that has rocks and mud (if it rains). We had a van that made it just fine, but it was definitely a funny adventure.
Additionally, there isn't any air conditioning, so if you run pretty warm, just be aware. They had fans and with the windows open we were totally fine.
We enjoyed our short stay here and wish we had time to stay longer. Jim was great and very accommodating. The local restaurant he suggested was great and had the best prices we saw our entire 2 week stay in Costa Rica. The house was cool, very open concept and the bridge was neat. The outside gardens looked great, and I wish we had more time to just sit outside.
The hosts were incredibly welcoming and helpful! Carol was very responsive when we were booking. The house was very nice and the property was beautiful -- the hosts encourage you to pick fruit/herbs/etc. to eat! I would note that it is closest to Jicarito, about 35 minutes from La Fortuna. It is also down a dirt road that some of our van drivers were a little wary of. If you plan to take a cab or have a smaller rental car, I'd recommend confirming with them the road is drivable for the car you plan to take.
Jessica, Jim and Carol are fantastic hosts. Their guest house is perfect for small families and breakfast every morning was great. They were so helpful arranging transportation and tours.
The location is about 25 minutes from La Fortuna and isolated, so it is good to end the days there and not drive back and forth. If you are going to the Arenal area for 3-4 days, this is a great place for a family to stay.
Our family of 6 felt very welcome. The owners were very friendly and helpful, not to mention, they cooked us an awesome breakfast each morning! The home is actually in a nearby town (Jicarito) about a 30 minute drive into the main town of La Fortuna. The home was very nice and the property was lush with many fruit trees and even a river. I would recommend this place to people wanting to stay in the area.
